How did I make such a mistake, a mistake that will cost us alot.
“Who called the police,” John asked as we made our way to the car.
I couldn’t answer at that moment but just kept quiet
The police drew closer to us as we ran into the car, they fired at us as they chased our car.
It was a hot chase as Janet drives into the main road, luckily for us the road was free been it’s late in the night and quite unfortunately for us it made catching up with us easy for them.
They shot at us with the bullet hitting our cars and breaking the back screen, we all had to bend our heads to avoid been hit.
The police were on our tail on every direction we took.
It was early dawn and we have passed ijebu ode and already on the Ore road heading towards Benin, we have given the police some distance when we ran out of fuel, we parked and ran into the bush, when we were some distance away we stopped to catch our breath.
“What do we do now,” Michael asked looking scared.
I turn to Janet “Janet! You and Michael, take the money and go on this direction, run as fast as your legs could carry you, when we outrun the police we would meet you guys in the hospital,” I said trying to catch my breath.
We could hear footsteps coming our way and immediately we took to our heels, they open fire at us, firing at every direction, luckily no bullet hit us.
We ran deep into the forest not minding how far we have gone, all that matters was surviving.
I quickly signalled to Janet and Michael to run the other way.
Immediately they turned a bullet hit Michael on his chest and he fell down dead immediately.
We all stopped on our track and crawled to him, tears were already running down my eyes.
Janet was already crying, we got close to him and found out he was dead.
“Janet please we have to continue,” John said.
“Continue what, Can’t you see he is dead,” Janet shouted at John crying.
“But we can’t remain here or the police will catch up with us, don’t let his sacrifice go to waste,” Peter said.
Janet got us and started running cleaning her tears with the back of her hands.
The three of us continued running trying to get away from them, they were catching up on us.
We got to a cave and we ran into the cave without thinking, we watch the police come into view, we gave up thinking they have finally found us but something happened that left us speechless.
They stopped and try searching around for us but couldn’t find us, we watch them search every corner.
Five of them headed to the cave we were hiding, we were scared our cover was blown, but when they came into the cave they couldn’t see us, we were standing just facing the five of them but they couldn’t see us, the looked around while we just stare at them in confusion.
Peter looked at me like what is happening and I opened my two hands indicating that I don’t know.
When they finish with their search they left the cave and we moved closer to the entrance of the cave still surprised.
“Ten of you should remain here and search more, five of you should go forward, five to the left and five to the right, they are still around,” said a police man who happens to be leading the group.
We looked at them in total shock as our mouth remained open and hanging.
“What is going on Matthew?” John asked me.
“I am surprised as you are,” I replied.
“Where is that smell coming from,” Peter asked sniffing the air.
We both join him in sniffing the air. “It’s coming from inside the cave,” I replied.
“It smells baddddd,” Peter said sluggisihily as he falls down, I turned to John to see him acting drunk and that was when it hit me, I felt dizzy, I couldn’t hold my eyes open, my knees became too weak to carry my body I dropped to the ground, I could hear voices but couldn’t see anybody as I passed out.
