No Room For Love Episode 38

‘Has it come to that Katie?’

‘Yes, it has Matts.’

Kate quickly told Matts before she could change her mind.

‘Alright. Nectar wasn’t a violent man, but nobody could tell what the argument was about, at least he still hasn’t told us what their fight was about when his wife slipped and hit herself so hard. It was a weekend when he rushed her to the hospital.

‘But he is a doctor Matt’s.’

‘You know you can’t get involved when you are family to the patient.’

‘Yeah, i forgot.’

‘His wife was seven months pregnant and he learnt it would take the doctor one hour to reach the hospital, which was outside of town where they went on a vacation.

‘And there were no doctors on duty?’

‘No, unless they were needed urgently. No one showed up for that whole hour of waiting and looking at the unexperienced nurse’s toy with his family, he got into the operating room to save his wife and unborn child which at the end was too late.’

Kate’s hand flew unconsciously to her stomach but she quickly regained her composure.

‘Is that all i needed to know?’ Kate regained her composure.

‘He was nearly discredited as a doctor but the two nurses on duty confirmed he was only trying to save his wife from an incompetent hospital.’

‘How long has it been?’ Kate was curious.

‘Seven years. He came back and opted for weekend shifts at the hospital though he doesn’t mind working throughout the whole week but he prefers to be there for everyone during the weekend. Nectar over the years had become a shadow of himself and hence his childish behaviors as you put it always.’

Kate gave Matt’s a gesture, that informed her to mind her own business.

‘That explains his choice of hospital.’

Kate saw herself relaxing and the burden she felt earlier was gone.

‘Yeah, he might not be earning much, but he chose the smallest hospital just to keep reminding himself of his failure to save his family. You can throw an insult at Saint as a woman but he would just smile at you.’

‘Seems to me like he blames himself.’

‘Ahuh, he blames himself all the time for that tragedy and changed his name from Saint to Nectar.’

‘Why did he do that?’ Kate enquired.

‘He said he couldn’t save his family when he’s called Saint. And he kept murmuring that for a whole year since he got back, but now the worst is almost over.’ Matts narrated and paused in between.

‘You are sure it’s really over?’

‘Yes, but i was afraid back there, the last time when he yelled with that tone.’ Matts resumed with her full gaze on Kate now.

‘I was scared too Matt’s.’

‘Has he done anything violent to you Katie?’

‘Huh!’ Then she realized she was deep in thoughts again.

‘No, he hasn’t and thank you.’ She murmured to Matts.

Surprisingly Kate wasn’t bothered about all that she has heard so far. She only kept to herself for a while and let out a sigh of relief after some few minutes.

As they entered, through the gates finally in their rides, all Kate wanted was to sleep so she could think about her life.

She got in and found Nectar working on something by his study table.

‘You are back already, how was your mom?’ Nectar asked Kate.

‘Fine, but please no further questions, I want to sleep, then we can talk.’

Kate replied her husband.

Kate saw the surprise gestures written all over Nectars face for her first calm conversation with him without yelling though she was surprised herself, it was something she also anticipated might happen after what Matt’s told her earlier.

‘Who wouldn’t be that calm after what just happened? I’m not that inhumane.’ She thought to herself once more loudly.

Nectar probably didn’t hear what she said.

‘Okay, wake up in time for dinner.’ He said smiling childishly again.  Kate just jumped on her bed and slept. She woke up to noises and shrugged opening her eyes.

‘I said you should leave her alone.’ Nectar whispered quietly.

‘Why?’

‘Because I’m not sure she would want to see you.’

Kate heard Nectar cautioning Matts.

‘Emmm gentle man.’ She still wasn’t used to calling Nectar by his name. ‘Let her in, I will be fine with her!’ Kate said trying to sound free.

‘Katie, I just came to check on you. I know you would be having a headache by now and I’m sorry for dropping that bomb on you earlier.’ Matts said with sincerity in her voice.

‘That is fine Matts, I guess I had to know.’

‘Mom said dinner is ready, so you should come down.’ She further said this time without any burden.

‘I would in some minutes,’ Kate managed to say with sleep burning her eyes up.

‘See you around then.’ Matts waved and walked away smiling.

Nectar, flashed a confused gaze on her and back to his sister who was walking out.

‘What was that all about?’

His eyes stared after asking the question he knew would put him in trouble.

“Mind your own business, gentle man?” Kate said in her head gently while Nectar got the message clear and stayed out of her way.

Washing down after dinner was refreshing for Kate. She was talking to her mom on the decisions she has made when Nectar came in, she watched him wrap up whatever he was doing earlier, washed down and moved to the couch, as he had been doing since after the accident.

EPISODE 39

‘I’ve made a decision on the antenatal. I want to have it at your hospital and also can we look at the house you got later in the week because I will be resuming work next week?’ Kate sat Nectar down for a talk.

Nectar kept staring, while Kate did all the talking, ‘say something or you don’t want to be my doctor anymore.’

Nectar finally sighed, and said, “Okay! I will have the paper work done tomorrow, but you should know things have changed.” Nectar said at the end and paused for a minute, making Kate wonder what he was referring to.

Kate gave nectar a start talking now gesture.

‘Now that we are married, I could be your doctor out of the hospital but not inside the hospital premises but i will get you a good one.’

Nectar said and adjusted himself in the couch.

Kate was a little disappointed he said that, but she understood and reassured herself.

***

Kate was having one of her usual afternoon naps when she heard noises and woke up.

‘Finally.’ He sighed. ‘Your mom has been waiting for two hours now,’ Nectar said after Kate’s afternoon nap.

‘What? You didn’t wake me up.’ Kate asked nectar as if they had an agreement concerning that.

‘Kate you told me not to interrupt when you are asleep,’ Nectar said innocently this time.

‘Gosh, forget whatever I said. What a child you are.’ Kate hissed and stood up. ‘Where is she?’

Before Nectar could say anything, else Kate had rushed downstairs.

‘Hey mom,’

Kate be careful you don’t fall off as you are running down the stairs like a child.

‘Mom, what are you doing here.’

‘Are you driving me out?’

She said and laughed.

They talked with the family for a while, when Kate asked her mom inside her room.

‘Hey WhatsApp.’

‘Mom don’t get angry, I was going to tell you.’

‘What have you not told me again?’

‘That nectar is the father of my twins.’ Kate said softly shifting away as she anticipated a slap from her mom!

‘Huh, say again.’

‘Yes, you remember the gentle man I slept with at the bar.’

‘Yeah, you mentioned that when he first came to the house, I thought you were being rude as usual.’ Her mom clarified.

‘No i wasn’t.’

‘Have you told him yet,’ Her mom inquired?

‘No, I don’t know how he would take it.’

Kate confirmed her fears to her mom Catherine.

Kate could feel her mom’s anger and full eyes on her while she spoke up.

‘Don’t tell me you are planning to keep this again.’

Catherine finally calmed herself down and asked.

‘No, I will but not now please.’ Kate said in fear.

‘Just make sure you do soon because I can’t help you with this baggage now that you are married, you need to learn how to solve your own issues.’

Catherine finally advised her daughter.

‘Thanks mom. How are you not so very angry this time.’

‘Well because I always knew!’

‘Huh!’

‘Yeah right, Kate. Your mother knows everything.’

Catherine said and both mother and daughter laughed.

***

‘At least say something about the house, if you don’t like it then i start looking for a new one.’ Nectar muttered with a slight frown.

‘I remember you sitting me down about this same house the last time.’ Kate mentioned calmly.

Nectar tried to control his anger when it seemed like Kate has changed her mind after several weeks of trying to get through to her.

‘Emmm, yeah but you have been silent on that issue.’ Nectar clarified.

‘Look gentle man, I’m trying to be calm right now and adjust to the fact that I’m stuck with you now. So, don’t provoke me. And whichever environment you think your children could stay is fine with me.’

‘My children?’ Nectar quickly repeated what Kate said with his full gaze now directed to his wife.

‘I mean, I’m stuck here with you so whatever the pater… nity of these in… noce.. nt ones are shouldn’t really matter.’ Kate stuttered.

Nectar watched on indecisive for a while.

‘Right, or you don’t want to be a father to them anymore.’ Kate carefully defended herself whiles constantly checking Nectars reaction.

‘No don’t take it that way.’

‘Then?’ Kate stared.

‘I want to, if you will let me.’

Nectar said succumbing to Kate’s statement.

‘Good then, when can we move in.’ Kate chipped in.

‘I just need to make some payments. Give me two weeks’ tops.’ Nectar said!

‘You don’t have money?’  Kate sighed.

‘I just want to make this investment with some other resource, so please bare with me.’ Nectar apologized.

***

‘Sorry, I was rude the last time when you girls came by. ‘Kate said shyly, to both Annette and Eve.

‘That’s fine Kate.’ Eve said.

‘Does that mean we are even now.’ Annette chipped in looking in Eve’s direction.

“Not a chance,” Kate retorted back to Eve’s question but whatever bitterness she held against them was almost over.

They were talking when Matts came home. Kate haven’t seen her in a while.

‘Is there a meeting I don’t know of?’

They turned to her direction.

‘Hello, Katie are you okay.’ Matts asked?  So innocent like those days, Kate thought!

“Kate are you listening at all, a drink up next weekend”, the girls chorused.

Matt’s dropped her bag and joined in the discussion.

‘You all know I can’t drink now and besides we are moving from here to our new place. I would therefore be busy.’ Kate managed to throw her friends off her back.

‘Katie did you just make an excuse not to hang out with us.’ Eve asked.

‘You know what; we will come help you move.’ Annette said.

‘Good,’ just then her next nightmares entered.

‘Hey ladies, I can see you are having fun.’ Nectar smiled. ‘Eve you look good in your attire. I can see marriage is doing wonders for you huh.’ Nectar said and walked away.

They all laughed except Kate who found it annoying.

As soon as her friends left, Kate confronted Nectar!

‘What was that all about earlier?’ Kate asked Nectar.

‘What are you talking of?’ Nectar pretended not to know what she was referring to.

‘I mean you were flirting with my friend in my presence.’

‘Really Kate, are you jealous now?’ Nectar found her question amusing.

‘Me! No, forget it.’ Kate tried to hide her jealousy. Do your worse.’

Kate didn’t know she just unconsciously got jealous for no reason.

***

She got herself washed up quickly for the evening. During bedtime, she saw him fidgeting with his hands on the couch.

‘Gentle man, you are making noise. Why do you keep turning up and down?  I can’t sleep with that noise, I’m restless already.’ Kate asked nectar who keeps murmuring stuffs to himself from a distance and makes a lot of noise with his body against the couch.

‘Sorry, I have aches all over due to lying on one side all the time.’

‘All the best.’ Kate said and tried to sleep but she was feeling guilty.

After a few minutes she couldn’t take the noise coming from him turning up and down anymore.

‘Look, I didn’t sack you from here, you decided to move there yourself so it’s either you get over your pride and come over to bed or you go and sleep elsewhere, you are distracting my sleep.’

She said sarcastically.

Nectar just picked up his pillow and went out. ‘I cared less.’ Kate murmured quietly.

‘Katie, I don’t want to poke my nose in your marriage but Saint was in my room last night.’ Matts asked her brother’s wife over morning coffee.

“Did you sleep with him too?”

Kate rubbed the past once again in Matt’s face.

‘Katie, I thought we are over the past now. Do you have to rub it in my face every now and then?’ Matts asked rather angrily.

EPISODE 40

‘Did you guys have a fight Katie?’

‘Fight?’ Kate repeated.

‘I worry because i’m responsible for his recovery since he got back from Germany but you are in this with him now and I think you should know.’ Matts muttered with so much worry.

‘Know what?’

‘Emmm nothing but anything out of the extraordinary just let us know immediately.’ Matts was sounding so scary now.

‘Is there something else you are not telling me here Matts because I may not be of much help if I’m not aware of what I have married.’

‘He gets stressed out sometimes.’ Matt’s blurted out immediately to avoid further questions.

‘How do I handle it, Matts?’

Kate further probed when she realized Matts wasn’t ready to open up.

‘I don’t want to get involved.’ She replied Kate.

‘You know he is my stress; I could barely handle his childish behavior so talk to me.’

‘Talk about what exactly?’ Matts was sounding rude and tired of the discussion.

‘Any mental problem?’ Is he harmful?’ Kate said so loud now to draw Matts attention.

‘Katie, how could you refer to a human being that way. I know you don’t love him but please, he is nothing like that. Nectar only has sleepless nights with the memories rushing back in.’

Matts narrated quickly with regrets enveloping her face.

‘Thank God. That I can handle and I didn’t sack him. He left the room on his own so maybe you can ask him why?’ Kate assured Matts.

‘Sorry I lashed out on you,’ Matts also replied. ‘I was just concerned but hey the girls are coming over to help pack up today, hope you don’t mind.” Matt’s asked Kate.

Kate nodded her head to confirm it was okay.

***

They moved in their own apartment, three blocks from her old house which she was grateful for. The time with the girls was a success, though they kept talking too much. Kate thought to herself the whole time.

Kate slept throughout while Nectar was doing the heavy lifting, which she admired with the corner of her eyes. He was all sweaty and shirtless.

Kate smiled to herself in between her thoughts.  Then she realized she was pretending to be sleeping when she was actually thinking about her husband’s shirtless body.

Kate woke up at a point and the girls were gone.

‘Kate, I managed to cook, you can try and if you don’t like it then we go out for dinner,’ Nectar drew her attention to his happy face.

“I’m not sure I want to eat any sick food, besides I’m not hungry.” Of course she didn’t say that aloud.

‘I just want to sleep,’ she managed to take the insults off her mind and then said something appreciative to nectar.

‘Okay I would join you soon,’ Nectar replied.

‘Your stuffs are in the other drawer,’ Nectar said and Kate found herself admiring the outcome of the room while forgetting to say a simple thank you.

‘What else is Nectar not good at,’ she murmured to her belly.

Admiring her yet protruded belly, Kate kept smiling.

***

They lived like roommates for the next couple of weeks and Nectar was given her the privacy she needed.

‘These twins are also doing a number on me,’ She spoke to no one in particular that early morning while still lying on her bed like a lazy girl. She kept sleeping off at work and everywhere.

Kate was still in deep thoughts when Nectars voice startled her.

‘Your breakfast is in the microwave; will you want to take it in bed?’ Nectar said softly to his wife…

‘You don’t give up right? And isn’t today Saturday? Why are you not at work? Kate questioned Nectar with anger.

‘I wanted to cook for you.’ He replied with a smile.

‘That’s not necessary. If I need food I would get to the kitchen,’ she said rudely again.’

‘You don’t need to stress yourself Kate; you know our children are growing fast.’ Just let me help, give me a chance please.’

‘But i don’t like you.’ She said honestly.

‘Kate, I know you don’t like me that much but allow me to take care of you and when you put to bed, you can do whatever you want.’ He tried to sweet talk her.

“I said I don’t want anything from you, what part of that phrase don’t you understand.” Kate couldn’t manage saying that to his face again, after seeing the sorrow look he put on earlier so she said it quietly while taking off her gaze.

‘Kate, why are you so bitter towards me. I mean I married you because I like you. What do I have to do so you can cut me some slack?’

‘I want you to leave me alone. That is what I have always wanted because you men are all the same, I give you an opportunity now and you end up turning my life into another mess.’

‘I’m Nectar and not all men.’

‘What shows you are different?’ She finally asked after several stares and tried to get out of bed.

‘Would you ever like me, it has been a month since we moved in together. Married for two months and you still give me this attitude; we have not even had our first night yet.’

‘Really? So you think I’m a fool to sleep with you again, with this pregnancy?’

‘I don’t want to sleep with you because I met you at a bar but because you are my wife now.’ Nectar said rather sadly.

‘What wife? You forgot this is only on paper right!’

Kate chipped in laughing now hilariously.

‘I thought your dad said….’

Nectar was about to say something when she interrupted him.

‘My dad, said what?’ Kate interjected again.

‘Nothing.’ He found his voice.

‘Why i’m I even having this conversation with you?’

Kate stood up from the bed to walk out when Nectar held her and turned her around facing his face.

For some reason she didn’t resist his touch.

Kate couldn’t tell what they were trying to do but they were suddenly searching each other’s eyes.

She wondered where he suddenly got all that courage from.

Then her phone rang from her hands. She quickly regained her composure and answered immediately.

‘Mom I was just about to call you.’ She walked out and found Nectar following her with a bulge.

‘Okay that’s new.’ She smiled unawares and waved him a hand rudely.

Her mom thought she was talking to her and responded but Kate’s mind was not on their chat throughout that whole morning.

***

Kate avoided him the whole day until they retired to bed late at night.

‘Keisha! Keisha! Keisha I’m sorry please.’

Kate woke up and found Nectar rolling on the bed, sweating profusely.
