To Be A Man Part 2 – Emeka Edozie
As I took my phone to check who was calling me, I discovered that it was the woman that gave me #2000 the previous day.
I was happy because I knew that it was business as usual.
“Oga, please come to my shop right away.. I have loads of goods I want you to take to my other shop”.
“Ok, Ma…I will be there in a jiffy”
I stood up from the bed and wore my clothes even without taking my bath. I can’t let this huge opportunity of getting money pass me by.
I was about to leave when my wife woke up from sleep..
“Honey, are you leaving already”?
“Yes sweetie, a customer called me now and I need to carry some goods to her other shop”, I said.
” Please, go to Mama Ifeanyi’s shop later and ask her to give you bread and Pap….Tell her I will pay immediately I come back from work”
I stormed out of the house with my rickety wheel barrow.
As I got to her shop, she showed me the goods and I started loading them in my wheel barrow.
The goods were many and so I spent so much time transporting them to her other bigger shop.
When I finished carrying all the goods, I went to where she was resting and told her that I was done.
Instead of saying something to me or paying me, she was just staring at my bare body.
She stared at me from my chest to my lower region while licking her lips.
I knew I had developed a muscular body because of the weighty goods I carried everyday.
My muscular body was as a result of the hard job I do everyday and not as a result of going to the gym house.
When I noticed that she was lost in her thoughts, I tapped her on her shoulder.
“Eeheeh eeeh..you startled me”!!!
“I am sorry, ma….I was telling you that I was done but you weren’t paying attention to me”
I am sorry”, she said.
She dipped her hand into her purse and brought out 5 new mints of #1000 notes.
She handed the money to me as I stood there dumbfounded!!
#5000??
“Ma, you just gave me #5000 oooo “
I knelt down immediately and started praying for her but she urged me to stand up.
I was so happy that I kept thanking and praying for her.
“Madam, God will bless you so much”, I exclaimed!!
I was about to go when she called me back and told me to sit down…
She adjusted for me as I sat down close to her….
“I am a married woman and my husband travelled to Germåny since last three years ago. The first day that I Saw you, I knew you are a good man.”
“Thank you, ma”, I replied her.
” I will make you so rich….I would give you so much money that you won’t ever lack anything again but I want you to make me happy”, she smiled.
How am I supposed to do that?, I asked inquisitively!!
“You’re not a baby…..I want you to always make me feel like a woman but I won’t force you. I want you to go home and think about it”
“If you agree to it, I will transfer #500,000 to you immediately” ,she chuckled.
“Madaaaam, did I hear you say that you will give me #500,000”, i stammered.
“Yes, just go home and think about this golden opportunity I am offering you”, she said.
As I left her shop, I couldn’t stop thinking about what she said. It kept ringing like a bell in my heart.
My wife was outside spreading the clothes she washed when I entered the house. She left everything she was doing and ran towards me. She hugged and greeted me as she asked how my day went…
“Fine”, I replied grudgingly.
She knew something was wrong. She understood that something was bothering me.
I dipped my hand into my pocket and handed the #5000 to her.
She held the money as she stared at me in bewilderment!!
“How did you make such money? Who gave you the money? Did anything happen today? Where did you pick the money?”
My wife wouldn’t stop asking me. I tried to wave it off but she wouldn’t bulge.
She was the kind of woman that won’t ever rest till you give her answers to her questions.
In order for me to rest, I told her how I was able to transport many goods to the warehouse.
She wasn’t particularly convinced by the explanation I gave her.
She went and put water for me as I took my bath and ate the portage yam she made with the money I gave her.
As I laid down on the bed that night, I couldn’t sleep.
This temptation was way above me. I was thinking about the huge amount of money involved and how it would change our lives forever.
It was just to sléëp with her once and my wife won’t even know about it….
But what if she finds out??
Would my marriage still remain the same??
Many things were going through my mind. I was just rolling from one end of the bed to the other.
I turned around as I looked at the face of my wife. She looked too innocent although her beauty was fading because of the hardship we’ve faced for these past few years.
she had sacrificed a lot for me and I don’t want to hurt her.
If she ever get to hear about it, it will break her down completely, I thought.
I was confused!
I didn’t know what to do or what to think.
I looked at my two children lying down on the mat. I could see pain and suffering written all over them. I wished I would be able to give them the better life they deserved!!
We have been living in a one room apartment for so many years now and my children doesn’t go to school.
Just like she said, this is a golden opportunity that I won’t afford to miss.
I concluded in my heart that I was going to dance to her tune the next day.
I slept off immediately I made the decision.
I was woken up from my sleep after few hours by my wife who was sobbing as she prayed with all her might.
I acted as if I was still sleeping as I listened to her prayer keenly!!!
“Lord Jesus, help my husband….His suffering has ended today……He shall receive favour from anyone he comes in contact with in Jesus name….Enough is enough!!”
I pretended as if I was fast asleep. My wife prayed aggressively as if she would die that day.
“Nothing shall spoil my marriage in Jesus name. My husband will see no shame in Jesus name. Companies will call him for employment in Jesus name. My husband’s heart desires must be granted in Jesus name”,she kept praying.
Since I got married toy wife, I have never seen her pray like that .
What was wrong?
Did she notice that I wasn’t myself? Did she notice that something was still bothering me??
I was still pondering over this aggressive prayer of hers till I dozed off again.
I was woken up by the alarm clock in our room around 7: 45am. I jolted from the bed as I called my children and wife so that we would have our morning prayer.
Immediately we finished praying, I dashed into the bathroom and had my bath. My wife made food for me and I ate hurriedly so that I would go and meet the woman.
I noticed that my wife was suddenly silent. She had not uttered a word since she woke up. I asked her if she was ok but she just nodded her head in affirmation.
I tried to find out what was going on with her but she refused to divulge her reason of keeping quiet since morning.
I was thinking already of how the money will change our lives forever.
I can’t wait to make my wife happy and send my children to school again.
My mind was made up.
I didn’t want her mood to stop me from doing what I planned already so I stood up immediately and wore my cloth.
I kissed her on the forehead as I banged the door and left the house.
As I was going to the woman’s shop, my heart was racing. I couldn’t hold my emotions. I wasn’t feeling alright but I had brace myself up for the consequences of my impending action.
I knew I have tried to make my family happy but nothing had worked for us.
Immediately the woman sighted me from afar, she let out a seductïve smile.
She knew I would eventually come back.
“Good day ma, I am here to tell you that I have agreed to do everything you said”, I said.
“Wow, this is great news and I am happy you made the right choice”, she chuckled.
“Welcome to the world of riches…I will make you comfortable and rich only if you always make me happy”, she giggled.
She called her sales manager to get her bag for her as she stood up from her chair….
She came towards me and whispered into my ears..
“Enter the car, let’s go to the hotel immediately so that you will show me what you’re made of”
I was surprised!
“Madaaaam,madam…but you said that you will transfer the #500,000 immediately I agree to do what you want me to do”, I stammered.
“Don’t worry, immediately we’re done with the business, I will transfer it to you…I won’t fail you”
I entered her Venza as she drove to one hotel in town. She paid for a room and we entered the room.
I was just feeling uneasy!!
I have never cheated on my wife before but my situation has bent my will.
She sat beside me and planted a hot kïßs on my forehead.
“Let me freshen up so that we can get down to business”, she smiled as she entered the bathroom.
I started to plead for forgiveness from my wife in my heart.
“Would she ever forgive me”?
I was still thinking about my wife when my phone rang!!.
It was an unknown number. I picked it and a voice that I didn’t recognize started speaking…
“Is this Mr Emeka”?
“Yes” I replied.
“This is Mr Abdul from merchandise company. We are deeply sorry for sacking you because of the lie Mr Ebu told against you. We’ve discovered that he was the one that stole the device in the company”
Eeerm….eerrrm…
“We plead with you to come back to the company immediately as a new apartment and a car had been made available for you”
“Is this a dream”?, I asked.
“10 million naira will be paid into your account within 20 minutes from now to compensate you for all the troubles we’ve put you through”
I was about to ask questions but he ended the call…
I stood up like a goat that had already been tied to be slaughtered from the bed and made my way to the door.
I was about to leave the room when the woman came out from the bathroom…
“Where are you going to”, she asked.
“Madam, with all due respect, gettat abeg”.
I rushed out of the hotel room immediately as i boarded a taxi that took me home.
I got home and told my wife how I have been reinstated back to my position in the company.
She was dumbfounded. Tears of joy was just dripping uncontrollably from her eyes.
I quickly carried her into our room as I made lóve to her like never before.
Who could have thought that our condition would change in a twinkle of an eye??
All thanks to God and my priceless jewel, my wife!!!
