NO, YOU ARE NOT A CHRISTIAN - Bola Adewara

NO, YOU ARE NOT A CHRISTIAN. YOU ARE A CHURCH GOER

This clarification is most pertinent…

Driving home after Sunday service yesterday, a little girl, about five years old was rehearsing what they teach her in school. I heard her say…

A Christian is some one who believes that Jesus is the son of God.

She was saying it repeatedly that it drew my attention as I was driving and a debate began in me.

A Christian is one who believes that Jesus is the son of God? No, my dear tata. The teacher who taught you that needs to be retrained.

The Church is populated today by people who believe Jesus is the son of God but they don’t follow Him. They don’t obey Him. They don’t trust Him. They only mouth His name and seek His face when they are in trouble. They read the Bible or pray only when they need something from Him and when He does not come on time, they have alternatives. No, these people cannot be called Christians.

They are Church goers!

WHO IS A CHRISTIAN?

The term “Christian” is found three times in the New Testament. It is employed initially in conjunction with the ministry of Barnabas and Saul in Antioch of Syria, for behaving like Jesus. Therefore, being a Christian is to behave like Jesus, to follow what He says always. A Christian is not just someone who believes Jesus is the son of God. Believe and behave are two different words.

So many people would say, ‘I was born a Christian.’ ‘I am a Christian by birth.’ No sir. You can never be born a Christian nor can you be one by birth.

* You are not a Christian because your parents named you Rebecca, Dorcas, Peter or John. No sir/ma.

* You are not a Christian because your parents are one. Christianity is a personal race.

* You are not a Christian because you were taken to Church on the seventh day.

* You are not a Christian because you are called a deacon, elder, pastor, prophet, etc. So many of these title holders are not BORN AGAIN.

Christianity is not what we see of you in Church. Christianity is who you are in your office, in your neighborhood. It is what you do when no one is watching.

Christianity is how you respond to poverty, how you respond to medical report that you have a terminal disease. (may God forbid)

TO BE A CHRISTIAN IS BEYOND CONFESSION

To be saved involves two things: believing in your heart and confession with your mouth. But being a Christian is much beyond believing and confession. Confession without bearing fruit you is spiritual disaster. This is A’Level Christianity.

A billion people have confessed Christ but bear no fruit. That is why we have Churches all over the streets and crime is on the increase.

Therefore, permit me to say it is O’Level to say a Christian is someone who believes Jesus is the son of God. The A’Level definition is someone who is saved and bears the fruits. No fruits, no Christianity. By their fruits we shall know them!

A ‘Christian’ whose light cannot shine in darkness is a disaster! A ‘Christian’ whose salt is tasteless has no essence. A ‘Christian’ whose life has no impact on his far or immediate surrounding is a mere church goer! A Christian is known by the fruits he bears!
