He Came To Dress His Wound – Nwachukwu Chimobi Ifeanyi

He came to dress his wound at our hospital, and insisted on being attended to by me.
Even when they told him that I was off duty that day, he told them to call me to come to the hospital.
Since he didn’t allow other nurses touch him, they abandoned him in the OPD.

He had already spent some hours there by the time my matron came and saw him seating all by himself, and asked him what he came to do..he told her that he came for dressing, but wanted only me to do it.
My matron picked her phone and called me to start coming to the hospital-that a patient insisted that I would be the one to attend to him.

I was very angry to say the least..”I’m not close to the hospital ma” I replied.
“Chimobi leave everything you are doing and start coming to the hospital now”..and just like that, she hung up.

“What kind of rubbish is this na”, I thought to myself.. I checked my transportation fee, the inconvenience attached to it etc.. I grudgingly dressed up and started coming to the hospital. On getting to the hospital without as much as a smile on my face, I went immediately to see the man.. he smiled immediately I walked into the room.
He even called me his son as he greeted me.. in my mind, I said” Oga you are not my father.. I know my family members “

While all that happened in my mind, he continued talking..”I have been waiting for you since”..
I asked him.. Sir, but why didn’t you allow other nurses to dress your wound?
“My son, the last time I came to this hospital around March, you were the one that attended to me.
_I couldn’t even remember his face or when it happened sef, I was just looking at him_

He continued, still unaware of all that was going on in my mind.. “and before you started treating me you prayed, and I got well immediately I got home.

Now, I smiled (I actually don’t touch any patient without saying some prayers for them).

I took him to the dressing room.. the dressing that was meant to last less than 15 minutes lasted for about 30 minutes.. We exchanged contacts, and he gave me money at least 10 times my transportation fee.

I could have stayed back and adamantly refuse to do the dressing, life sometimes is not all about what you gain from people but what you sacrifice for the comfort of others ..though I was angry, I had compassion on him and it was the compassion that dragged me out..not my Matron’s call.

At the end humanity won!
