DEAR PARENTS, STOP THIS "EXTRAMURAL" MADNESS

DEAR PARENTS, STOP THIS “EXTRAMURAL” MADNESS written by Tunde Daniels

“DEAR PARENTS, STOP THIS “EXTRAMURAL” MADNESS. YOU CAN PRODUCE A SECONDARY SCHOOL GRADUATE AND AT SAME TIME PRODUCE AN ENTERPRENEUR.

The long vacation is here again. They call it extramural lessons but I call it EXTRA PUNISHMENT. I sat a parent down and gave her this advice and with immediate effect, she pulled her children from where she put them in an extra mural lesson and signed them up for various skills acquisition. I don’t know why people don’t respond to changes.

The world is changing. Nigeria is changing fast. I engaged in conversation with one of my brick layers who told me how many members of his family he caters for. In the list he gave is his elder brother who is a university graduate and he caters for his needs by giving “pocket money” occasionally as he isn’t yet employed. What does that tell you? Skills rule in this present economy. The main reason parents send their children to extramural lessons on holiday is to avoid their “disturbance” at home. It’s not as if they want the best academically for them.

The reason I call it extra punishment is because this same child on school days goes to school by 7:30am and returns 6pm(for the so called good private secondary schools) Yet the parents don’t see the need to allow them some rest on holiday or better still sign him up with something he will find excitement in doing. The economic change the world is experiencing now is not a joke and if you as a parent don’t respond to it by preparing your children and equipping then with skills, you are going to find your family in a mess.

As from JSS 1, you can sign up your child for holiday skills acquisition training. There are lots of them ranging from barbing/hair dressing, GSM repair, tailoring, electronics repair, Etc. You will notice that they will even be looking up to their holidays. By the end of their six years secondary school program, you have a son that can pay for his text books from proceeds he makes in barbing or tailoring while still doing a university program.

At the end of his university training, you already have a son who will be exporting designer clothes, have his own design label because now he has mixed skills with university knowledge. Stop this extramural madness. Am yet to see who will pay me money for drawing and labeling a lizard or toad or tilapia as that is all this curriculum teaches.

Be a smart parent. You can be producing a graduate and an enterpreneur at the same time. Sign your JSS1 children up for skills acquisition on holidays.”

Thanks so much
