True life story Part 1- The Humans of ABUJA

“I got married at age 24 to a man I was deeply in love with. We were friends before he travelled and he came back from Germany to marry me and after our wedding, we started making plans of traveling abroad together.

I was already pregnant so he suggested that we both apply for visa so that I can give birth abroad and we will eventually settle there.

Everything was going so well except for the fact that his siblings didn’t like me and he is the first son so we live in their family house.

His father was very diabolic and also didn’t like me because I didn’t allow him to manipulate me as he wanted. He was so notorious and wi*cked, he has surplus lands that he took away from widows and even weak men in his village.

People are always scared of him but I wasn’t at all and that’s why he detests even the trace of my feet. It was my mother inlaw that loved me down to the hairs on my body.

My mother inlaw so much loved and cared for me to the point that her husband began to maltreat her just to hurt me.

Unfortunately, my husband’s visa was approved and mine was denied. He was so unhappy and said that he will stay with me and I’ll reapply so we can travel together if mine comes out.

I convinced him to go alone instead of wasting that visa he already got. He reluctantly travelled alone. After he travelled, his siblings faced me squarely.

As at then, we write letters and send through mail box. He sends letters to me twice every month through his dad and I reply them through his dad as well.

After 3 months, I stopped receiving letters from him and I got really worried. My father inlaw wasn’t bothered either, somehow I just kept my cool.

When I was due for delivery, he came back unexpectedly and I was really surprised to see him. He asked why I’ve not been responding his letters, that he was worried when decided to come back.

He also told me that he sent in 7 cars for them to sell five out of them and then, keep two for whenever he comes back.

I was really shocked to hear all those, it turned out his father was trashing all the letters I sent to him and also stopped giving me the letters my husband sent.

My husband asked his father about the cars and the money cos he asked them to use the money to start his building. It was then that he found out that they ate the money, didn’t save a penny from it and even sold the ones he asked them to Keep for him.

He fainted, I helped to revive him and consoled him cos there was no other thing I could do. I expected my husband to do something about it but to my surprise he didn’t so I kept mute. I gave birth and after 10 months, he went back to Germany.

Before he left, he rented an apartment for me away from their village but he invited his dad and siblings to the place before he travelled.

He furnished the house with some household items he got while coming back. Just two weeks after he travelled, his younger brother came unannounced as usual.

I served him food, after eating he stood up and carried down one expensive chrome my husband kept for me. I asked him what he was doing, and he told me that my father inlaw asked him to bring it.

I asked why, and he told me that I have no right to question his father’s order besides it’s his brother’s property. I told him that it’s not possible and nobody has the right to come and carry what belongs to me and my husband.

He started abusing me, telling me how his brother married a mad woman and how he won’t tolerate any form of disrespect from the mad woman.

I told him that if he moves an inch with that chrome, I would show him the real madness he hasn’t seen. I went inside and tied my wrapper and came out.

I carried back that chrome and told him that he’s not going to take a pin out of my house and I don’t care who gave the order. He gave me a thunderous slap and I returned it.

He drew me on my braids and I screamed. I pushed him and he fell in between our couch and i pounced on him there holding him in his manhood. He kept screaming until my landlady and two other tenants came.

They asked what happened and I told them exactly what happened, they asked him and he kept screaming that I drew him on his manhood because he came to deliver a message to me..

I threw out his bag for him and warned him never to step his foot in my house. He went back to the village and reported me to my kinsmen.

They summoned me and after I narrated what happened, they fined him and took two fowls from their compound. The youth gave him the beating of his life, I finally started pleading with them and they left him.

The only word him and my father inlaw told me was that they will make sure they put a permanent separation between me and my husband. I left the village the next morning back to my house…”
