Troubled Waters Part 2 – Necelly Newton

This was an experience I never prayed upon anyone.

These creatures submerged me or maybe I entered a trance, I couldn’t tell but all I know is that I was in the water. I didn’t feel myself breathing, I was taken from whence I was through a city under the water. These words can’t best describe what my eyes saw; A whole city in the water.

Cars were moving, crystal-like houses were erected, and these creatures appeared like humans in the water. It was an entirely different world from what I was used to on the surface. I was fearful but my heart wasn’t pounding, It was as if I was soulless.

“Am I dead?” I wondered

“You’re not dead, Chukwujekwu,” one of the creatures escorting me said as if it could hear my mind. “We are taking you to see the Queen Mother for your journey is only about to begin”.

There was no time to wonder what her statement meant as I noticed everyone in the city stared as if they hadn’t seen someone or something like me before. Finally, we arrived at a giant gate boldly written ‘HELLHEIM: LAKE OF THE D*MNED’, two creatures stood sentries side by side at the gate. They had multiple eyes protruding from their stomach and they wielded heavy stones that had Latin inscriptions on them.

I may not know the meaning of the word on the gate but I knew the first four letters and the ‘lake of the d*mned’ inscription spelled doom. I fought hard not to be taken into this gate but it was effortless as they seamlessly took me inside and dumped me in a lonely courtyard. I tried to weep but tears weren’t forthcoming.

“Chukwujekwu Ojemba” a loud eerie female voice called out my name, “do you know where you stand?” it asked.

I looked around but couldn’t see where the voice came from “I… A marọ m” I answered in Igbo.

Suddenly, I heard a thud behind me and I turned to behold a giant serpent curled up looking at me. I slowly tried to back away but couldn’t. I watched as something spawned out of the serpent and took the shape of a voluptuous woman. She levitated towards me, she was quite attractive but her beauty didn’t deter me from the thoughts that she has every tendency to be dangerous.

“You’re in the 13th realm of existence, the realm of the spirits,” the woman said as she circled me before going back to where the serpent curled and caressed its head before saying “This is my beautiful boy, the Leviathan, and I… I am Nimua, the Queen of the d*mned”

I was drenched in fear. I’ve read books and stories of the 13th realm of the spirits and here I was, in it with no way home. I couldn’t utter a world only but stare and listen.

“Do you know why you’re here?” she asked me and I answered with silence which amused her. “You were warned to remove all your jewelry but you were too adamant. You humans like to say the stubborn fly goes into the grave with the corpse” the Queen said as she slowly started levitating towards me.

My lips finally opened and I started declaring the Blood of Jesus to save me. She laughed hard,

“Your God cannot save you here, Chukwujekwu,” she said with a smug on her face “Submit your soul to my master and I will take you home”

I could see the fangs in her mouth, it was razor sharp, dreadful, and soaked in bl**d. Particles of flesh dripped from the fangs and slowly her once beautiful face started to transmogrify into a decayed corpse. The Leviathan let out a loud hiss and started crawling toward me. I felt sick to my stomach as I continued declaring the blood of Jesus. Suddenly, a bright light flashed in my face and

WHOOSH!

I felt like I was in a dream and I could hear a voice trying to call me back to reality. I felt my spirit enter my body again as I wheezed and woke up to a man administering CPR on me. I coughed out water and a fish.

“Chukwu Daalụ,” the man said, he was dressed like a fisherman with a thatched hat on his head. He was happy to see me awake.

I looked around and I was lying down inside a canoe, beside me was my biggest shock; the necklace I had earlier flung into the water was there beside me. With alacrity, I flung the necklace out. I could hear crickets chirping as we emerged from the canoe

“Who are you? You don’t look like you’re from this village” the fisherman asked me.

“I’m not from here. I came from the East to fetch crayfish but I fell into the water. I must’ve drowned” I explained to him.

“You were floating on the water when I saw you. I was about to head back home when I saw your body out on the water” the fisherman said, “these waters are known to be infested by foul spirits when the sun goes down. We must leave here at once”

We hurriedly left the waterside back to the fisherman’s place. When we got to his place, I saw the time and it was 5:30 AM. This meant that whatever experience I was trapped in lasted several hours from dusk to dawn. After all was said and done, I found my way back to the East to meet my biggest surprise; the necklace once again found its way to the doorstep of my house.

It has been one helluva crazy week…

Ever since I got back from the Lake, things weren’t the same and Sandra, my fiancé noticed. She asked me repeatedly for what burdened my mind, at first I didn’t want to tell but when I finally did open up to her, she didn’t believe.

“How possible is it that you travel to the 13th Realm? Babe, you must’ve slept off or something” she said

Sandra was a hard nut to crack especially when it comes to superstition. They were all gibberish to her. She wanted facts and explanations as to why things are the way they are and she was always ready to get them. She booked an appointment with a doctor for an MRI scan. She was concerned I may have suffered some form of trauma to warrant the stories.

The night prior to the day we were to see the doctor, I was in the shower when a little started humming to a familiar moonlight tales that only my mother would sing to me when I was a kid. I drew the shower curtain but no one was in the bathroom. It was awfully quiet. The voice of Nimua the Queen of the Damned echoed the exact same words she did when I was in the water,

“Submit your soul to the master and I’ll take you home”

I slapped my head, worried sick that I may be developing some kind of psychosis. I hoped the voice was a hallucination and not real. I convinced myself that it was but then, a head came out from the water in my bathing bucket, it was Ala-Muki the Siren from the lake.

“Do you think you have escaped us?” she asked with a devilish smile on her lips, “mother awaits your return and return, you shall”

“I rebuke you! You foul spirit, you demon” I prayed but my words had no effect on her as she kept laughing

“Time is ticking, Chukwujekwu Ijemba… Tick tock… Tick tock” she basked in the euphoria of her threats, sending shivers down my spine as she retracted back into the water.

I quickly kicked the bucket and the water spilled all over the floor and that’s when Sandra entered through the door.

“Are you okay, babes?” she asked, seeing how shook I was.

I didn’t utter a word. I walked past her into the bedroom and straight to the bed. Drawing my nightstand open to pick up, there lay the necklace… The necklace that started all these troubles.

So here I was, staring blank at the MRI machine in Stella Marris Hospital with my mind heavily ladened. I could overhear Sandra speaking with the door, she must’ve tried to convince him I was only hallucinating. They spoke for a whole before the doctor walked in, leaving her outside.

“Mr Ijemba, I’d like to have a word with you and your woman in my office” the doctor said and without haste, I followed him.

When I walked out of the MRI room, I saw the look on Sandra’s face, It wasn’t pretty. The doctor must’ve told her something, something upsetting cos she grabbed my hand and interlocked fingers. I couldn’t tell if she was trying to comfort me or expressing her worry.

“Mr Ijemba, is there any history of psycho related issues in your family?” the doctor asked as we settled down in his office.

“None doctor” I scoffed for a second and “do you think… Wait, are you saying I’m crazy?” I asked him in anger.

“No Mr Ijemba. You’re not crazy, it’s just that… Your results… There’s a fungus growing in your brain. Well, not a fungus entirely, it looks like a fungus but it’s not. I have never seen anything like that” the doctor said before bending his face to the table.

“Well, maybe i have seen it before” the doctor’s countenance suddenly changed, he wore a sinister look “you have been marked. Submit your soul to the master and she will take you home” he warned with a possessed voice.

Sandra was confused. She tried to figure out what was happening but I already knew the answer. I urged her that we should leave and thankfully, she didn’t argue with it.

It was a long ride back home, silence reigned supreme in the car. Only the music from the FM radio serenaded the air as Sandra kept her eyes glued outside the window. Half the way, she turned to me, gently squeezing my hands

“What happened in the doctor’s office? Tell me” she asked with a gentle tone.

I flashed her a stare before putting my eyes back on the road. I waited a while before I answered,

“He was possessed” I said softly

“How did you know? One minute he was talking about a fungus and the next… Just talk to me Jey” Sandra said as she pushed my hands lightly

“The problem is that I’m talking but you’re not listening. What the doctor said, his last words are exactly same thing the woman in the water told me” I explained to Sandra.

“You know, there must be a logical explanation as to why…” Sandra suddenly froze whilst the words were still in her mouth.

She sat up straight, stiff and her eyes fixed on the road without blinking. I called out to her without an answer, I nudged her but she didn’t bulge. Suddenly, with an outburst, Sandra starts to speak speedily. The words that came out of her lips were Latin. Her eyes were still fixed on the road and she hadn’t blinked for up to 5 minutes; she looked like she was possessed.

After a while, she stopped and exhaled deeply then slumped on the dashboard.
