The Old Woman – Fau Zy
The old woman knocked on the hard gate again, her fragile knuckles hurting, with bones threatening to break.
“I’m sorry, mama. Your son asked me not to open the gate for you so please, go away. I actually pity you, but that’s all I can do,” the gateman’s sympathetic voice sounded from the other side of the gate.
…NOT TO OPEN THE GATE FOR YOU… FOR YOU… YOUR SON…
Pain coursed through her as the gateman politely recited those words again. This was the seventh time he’d done that that afternoon. Each time he said them, she would feel a throbbing pain in her heart. Even the harsh burn she felt on her skin from having to stand in the scorchingly hot sun for a long time, couldn’t compare.
The pain even surpassed the hurt she felt on her knuckles each time she knocked on the solid, stony gate which seemed like it was designed especially because of her.
“Are you still there, ma?” The gateman asked when he didn’t hear anything from her after sometime. “You’ve been in the sun for a while and that’s not good for you. You must be thirsty, maybe you need some water?”
“I don’t want water. I want to see my son. My son. I want to see him…” She pleaded painfully. She was standing outside her son’s mansion, yet she was offered no shelter from the sun.
‘He still doesn’t want to see me even after several years passed. And not a single day passed without me making efforts to reach him. He totally cut me off as if there was never any bond between us.’
Mama wiped off a single tear and sighed.
That was all she could do to keep herself from breaking down in tears.
“Tell Ben that his mother wants to see him. Tell him she has something to say to him. Tell him she wants to see him even if it’s the last time. And tell him she promises never to bother him again after this time. Tell him…”
The gate suddenly cracked open before she could finish and a bucket of water rained on her, completely drenching the clothes she had on.
Mama stood in shock for a while as her wet body dripped, the force of the water making her face stay peeled to the earth for sometime.
Then slowly, she lifted her eyes to behold the most venomous glare sent her way from a very familiar face.
