I was exhausted.
Fear engulfed me when I remembered what I told PS and what I was expecting at work the next day.
It could be my last day on that job.
I passed out on the couch in the room.
It was the middle of the night, I felt a hand crawling on my skin, I jumped up and it was Davia. She wrapped the duvet around her body and stared at me.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
“Yes I am, why did you sleep on the couch and not on the bed, that couch is too small for you, you can’t sleep comfortably on that, come to the bed” She said as she yawned.
“Thank you, but I am fine here, I didn’t want to disturb you.” I said.
“Come on Yemi, and why will you sleep with clothes on when you already undressed me” she said and laughed.
“Just kidding, pull off and come to bed, don’t forget to shower too” she said and went back to bed.
I wanted to sleep on that bed badly, I pulled off my clothes and went to the bathroom to have my bath. She picked up the hotel intercom and dialed a number. She spoke to someone over the phone which after, a knock sounded on the door. She handed my clothes over to the person at the door and shut the door.
I came out of the bathroom and asked who was at the door, she told me it was the hotel workers that she handed my clothes over to her for laundry.
“You might not be able to get home to pack another cloth that’s why I gave them to wash and iron for you, my driver would drop you at work tomorrow, now come to bed, you have little time till morning” she said.
I only had my boxer on. The AC in the room was freezing cold, I buried myself under the duvet and shivered, she joined me. I rested on my back and stared at the ceiling. She slept on her right hand facing me. She traced my chest with her hand.
“Thank you for cleaning up my mess, you cleaned me up and and placed me on this bed without touching me, you are rare, let me ask you a question, were you not moved when you saw my nakedness or you are not attracted to me” she asked
“I can’t take advantage of you Davia, you were drunk, what would I be doing with someone that wasn’t in her right state of mind?” I asked.
She hummed and moved closer to me.
“I know you don’t want to touch me, maybe you are scared or not but can I rest my head on your broad chest? I want you to cuddle me in your arms too” she said.
I drew her closer and she rested her body and her head on me. Her soft slim body massaged my skin. I felt her heart beating fast. She stared at my eyes and smiled. The peace that visited her mind was obvious.
It was just as if the whole world was in her arms as she wallow on my chest like an infant. Worry free and happy. She slept off in no time, I shut my eyes and slept off too.
The alarm I had set earlier blared, it was 5am, I opened my eyes, she was still resting on my chest. I slowly placed her on the bed and went into the bathroom to ease myself and had my bath. I sat on the bed staring at her.
She smiled.
She was awoken and I didn’t know. “You can stare as long as you are but at least tell me I’m beautiful” she said.
I laughed. “I didn’t know you were awake, hope you slept well?” I asked.
“Of course I did, who wouldn’t sleep well in the arms of a good man.” She said.
“Stop flattering me, please call them to bring my clothes, I need to dress up for work before the hold up starts building up, Ikeja is far from here.”
She dialed a number on the intercom and told them to bring my clothes
“Don’t go please, can’t you call them to give an excuse that you won’t be coming today? Tell them you are sick or something came up, my staff do call to tell me that and I didn’t kill them for it” she said.
“How I wish I could stay but today is a big day and I don’t know what it hold in it yet, I have to be at work today, it is very important.” I said.
There was a knock on the door, I opened up and there was a lady standing with my clothes on her hand, well ironed and placed inside a transparent nylon. She smiled at me and handed it over to me. I thanked her and shut the door.
“What is happening in your office? Tell me.” She asked.
“I will tell you everything, I promise.” I said as I dressed up. I was fully dressed. She came from the bed and hugged me tightly.
“Should I send my driver to come pick you up after closing time?” She asked.
I looked at her confusingly and asked why. She said she would like to see me again and spend more time with me. I asked where she would be and she told me she would still be in the hotel.
I was thinking why the hotel and not her house but I didn’t want to start that conversation because it might take away another 30 minutes from my time. I didn’t want to risk getting late to work so I postponed it and assured her that I would see her later in the day. She kissed my cheek when I was about to leave.
“Have a great day baby.” She said. “I will.” I replied and left.
There was no much hold up, except at Maryland and it moved after a little effort from car owners that helped passed the cars on other free lanes.
I got to my office a few minutes to 8am and went straight to my office.
I prayed, brought out my pending works and started sorting them out. I did that for an hour. DFA’s call came in. I was scared to the bone as a lot ran through my mind. I couldn’t think straight.
I picked and my voice was shaking. “Hello sir, good morning sir.”
“Good morning, please come to the PS’s office, there is an urgent meeting.” He said and dropped the call.
He didn’t sound excited. I knew something big was about to happen and I didn’t think it would go well with me. I braced my mind against anything that would happen. I said a little prayer before going.
I got to the Meeting room in the PS’s office and saw the members of the committee and every other person there. I got their attention when I walked in. They all stared at me. I walked in a calculated step and went straight to my seat. My eyes met with the DFA’s eyes, he didn’t look happy to me. I looked around and every other person looked serious.
I got the shock of my life when I suddenly sighted Tinuke on one of the seats.
I exhaled.
There is nothing to escape.
This is obviously the dead end.
My job is done in this ministry.

My heart beat slowed down because I was prepared for the worst, my head had started thinking about all possible means of livelihood I could venture into when I’m finally out of the job. On the other hand, my mind was at peace because I did the right thing.
The PS cleared her throat and started her speech. She started by welcoming everyone to the meeting and also appreciated everyone for their efforts and endless work on the subject project. She urged everyone to put their best in achieving this project because it is a pioneer project in Lagos state government.
She brought out some documents, analyzed the project budget and the approval from the governor.
“This project was approved two days ago by his Excellency and I received the documents yesterday, this means we are fully prepared to kickstart the project. We have the PS of the ministry of works here, the PS of the land bureau and the other DFAs that their department is part of this project. We also have a list of places to visit in China for our equipment and machinery. I am proud of this committee, they have really done well” she concluded her speech and everyone started clapping except me.
I avoided all their gazes and held my fingers together, my feet went cold and my head was banging.
“Lastly, I would like to talk about the chairman of this project, we nominated this young man on spotlight to head this project for a reason as we all know and…erhmm…he…he..hummm…” she stuttered.
My heart was about flying out of my heart, her suspense was killing me and I was already losing my patience.
She continued.
“When we brought him in to be the chairman of this project, we had a lot of back and forth because a lot of people went against him based on his inexperience, young and might be naive. He might have indecision issues, he might easily be controlled. After back and forth, we decided to give it a trial but on one condition. We will conduct a live integrity test for him.”
At this point I sat well with my chest up, I concentrated on her like others.
” we conducted a live integrity test for him using Tinuke and her father, the DFA. We initially tried our normal way but he was too smart for that, I noticed this when Tinuke submits her daily report on him. When it wasn’t looking real, we tried a live event that could get him intimidatly and act but all efforts went futile, then we launched the last stage by giving him an irresistible offer that could break the chain of his integrity, very few people has ever made it pass that stage, but to my surprise, he came to me yesterday to discuss everything that had happened. He passed our test. I was happy because I was able to prove a lot of people here wrong that he is different…
…join me as I reintroduce to you, the chairman of this ICT initiative and development center of the Ministry of Planning in person, Anigilaje Olayemi Bernard” she said and pointed at me.
Everyone gave me a standing ovation and applauded me. I couldn’t say a word, I froze and was emotional. I wept with my head down. I tried controlling it but I couldn’t because all the said test process replayed in my head. The emotional and psychological trauma I suffered in the process could not be forgotten in a jiffy.
I felt someone pulling me up and hugged me tight. It was Tinuke.
“Yemi, I am so proud of you, I always pray that you shouldn’t fall into my traps but it was what I was paid for, I couldn’t warn you, I had to do it, I’m sorry I put you through all that, anyways, congratulations.” she said and wiped my tears with a tissue. Others came to me and congratulated me with a hand shake.
The DFA came and held me in his arms.
“My boy, I am proud of you, your parents raised you well, you will go far my boy, this is how we all went through this test and only a few of us made it through, integrity test is not an easy test, you didn’t let it determine your personality. Congratulations” he said.
The PS came to me too and hugged me, she congratulated me too. My name was on everyone’s lips, people chatted in between one another and their expressions showed they were impressed. Some even whispered that they would like to have a word with me after the meeting, some collected my contacts while some gave me their cards and told me to reach out when I am free.
It was the happiest day of my life. The PS brought out a document and handed it over to the committee to sign, they all signed and it was my turn to sign. I went through it and I saw incentives for the members of the committees. I checked my name and I had 7million naira to my name while others had 5 million naira.
It involved an inconvenience fee, wardrobe allowance, feeding, hotels, and so on. I froze and opened my mouth. Everyone laughed out loud. The PS handed me her pen.
“Mr chairman, this pen is a special pen to me, I only use it to sign special documents, today, I am giving it to you, use it to sign and keep it, it’s a lucky bringer pen, don’t lose it” she said.
I gladly collected it and signed it. Our passports were handed over to us and other documents, the travel date was announced and we were told to prepare to make history. The meeting came to an end and different directors and other members came to congratulate me. Tinuke and the DFA walked me to my office, and the DFA left us.
“Yemi, I know you hate me right now but I’m sorry, it was what I was meant to do, please don’t define me by what I have done, see me as someone trying to keep her job, I promise I will make it up to you” she said.
I assured her that I had nothing against her and her apology was accepted, so she hugged me and left. I had nothing to think about anyone, all I had in me was a storm of happiness and the money I saw. At least, after all expenses, I would still have like 3million naira to myself, that is a lot of money. I shut the door of my office and danced alone.
My mind went straight to Sade, I called her to inform her that I’ll be taking her out for lunch. She was excited over the phone but she had no idea of what I wanted to tell her. it was lunch time, she strolled to my office and we headed down to the amala joint beside the central mosque. My attitude looked strange to her, she couldn’t helped but asked.
“Yemi, you are looking bright, what is going on?” She asked. I explained everything that happened to her. She was stunned. She was happy for me. She suddenly went quiet. I knew why so I advised her to tell Tinuke about the whole story so that she would understand what she went through in the hands of her father. She agreed that she would tell her when she has the courage. We had our lunch and went back to the office.
It was some minutes to 4pm, Davia’s call came in at the right time.
“Hi Yemi, how are you? How was work today? My driver is on the way to pick you up, he left a few minutes ago” she said.
I was glad I got off the entangled web of the ladies and I found someone neutral somewhere. I could feel something inside of me beating for Davia but didn’t know what it was.
The driver called me when he arrived, I packed my things and joined him.
We got to the hotel room and Davia ran into my arms.
“I missed you.” she said.
I lifted her off her feet and plugged my lips in hers. She was surprised as she disconnected.
It was all over her.
She brought it back to me and kissed me passionately, we landed on the bed and she rushed to loose my belt and gave me a stroke.
I moaned.
She undressed me while I pulled off her clothes. She came on top of me with a seductive smile.
“Let me make your first the best” she whispered and she grinded on me with her tiny waist.
The penetration was heavenly.
Oh what a feeling!
