**KELVIN’S POV**

I can’t believe she was eavesdropping on me in the kitchen,she must have heard all that I was saying.

I went to her room and knocked but she refused to open the door.

“Special!”

I can hear her sobbing quietly.

“You can’t lock yourself in there forever,am your dad and you are being stubborn to open the door”.

I heard her tiny footsteps approached then the door opened slowly.

She was looking down.

“I’m sorry daddy”.

I carried her up and consoled her

“Didn’t you want me, just like mom also?”

She mouthed ,those words gave me a guilt feeling.

“Special that’s not what I meant,you could have been better off without me bringing you to suffer”.

“But I am complaining Daddy,as long as I have you I am fine”.

She rested her head on my shoulder and sobbed loudly in my ear.

“It’s okay baby,I promise everything will be fine,this time around,I will do everything possible”.

I said with a determination I never had in my tone before.

Even if it means going to beg the man that adopted me before.

“Don’t push yourself so hard daddy,you might get a heart attack and I don’t want you to have a heart attack”.

She pecked my cheek,I smiled at her.

“So have you changed your mind about your profession,are you now our doctor?”

I teased her.

“A lawyer!”

She yelled out.

I laughed a little.

“Alright barrister Special,who needs a special barrister!”

She chuckled loudly.

“Daddy stop, I am not that yet”.

**Several months later**

I have sold everything furniture in my house to be able to pay for a small room in a face2face room in a yard.

I can’t count how many times I went back to beg my former boss ,even if it meant cutting my salary off by 50 per but he was serious about sending me off totally.

He also told me he was kind enough to let me have the car the company gave to me.

I made the best choice of selling it or else I did have to return it to him.

“Daddy”.

I looked down at the Special sleeping beside me.

“My tummy hurts,”she whined and groaned slowly.

“Are you hungry?”

She hesitated and shook her head.

Of Course she must be hungry,we only ate in the morning,and this is 6.08pm already.

“Maybe it’s worms,lie on your tummy, let me go and buy you food”.

I noticed how her face brightened at that announcement. I walked out of the room.

“Oga Kelvin”.

The caretaker called as soon as I stepped out of the room.

My heart skipped,I hope this isn’t bad news.

I greeted the neighbors and walked to him.

He was a man in his forties, heard the house belonged to his death father.

“Good evening sir”I bowed politely.

“Good evening, did you see the notice about house rent increase?”

“Yes sir but I just paid a week ago”I replied politely.

“You have to balance it up, others have done it already,I know that two fingers are not equal that’s why I decided to tell you lastly”.

“I appreciate sir,so much is my balance?”

“6,000”he replied and spat out, after brushing his teeth with the chewing stick.

I calculated to see if there’s anything I can sell to get that amount.

“I don’t have that amount at hand now sir”

I said gently.

“Will you do p.o.s then?”he inquired.

I shook my head, his face clouded in disappointment.

“Ok ooo, I am giving you a week, make  the money reach my hand next week,or else..I won’t be able to keep you,this is a new tenant grace for you, so you better double the hustle”.

“Thank you sir”.

I bowed and walked through the passageway.

“A young man like this doesn’t have six thousand in his account”.

“Do you know how life has been to him?”

I heard two of our compound women gossiping.

I stood on the road with my hand supporting my jaw watching the cars and their lights flashing.

I used to have them all, all sizes and colors, so funny how this world turned to this way for me, everything I have saved was taken away ,I was left with nothing,not even friends to run to. No one wants to associate with a bastard with no family background.

I felt my eyes wet and I quickly closed them to hold back.

Over the other side, there’s a restaurant so

I decided to go and beg them.

It’s already dark and Special will be worried about my whereabouts.

I walked into the restaurant and saw a young girl that works in there, I had to greet her in a way to gain her favor even though she is way younger.

“Good day mah”.

“Eh oh what do you want,we don’t sell mama put here”.

A sales girl snapped, judging me by my appearance.

“Please can I….”

She ignored me and started attending to the customers.

I persisted , following her around shamelessly.

“Mah…Ma.h…”

“Oga no dey call mah,am not the madam talk wetin you want!!’the girl snapped angrily.

“Can I watch the plates for a plate of food even if it’s leftovers”.

“Wetin this one dey talk…”

She glanced at me from head to toe and laughed a little in a mocking way.

“This one girlfriend don push am make him do the do”.

Another sales girl came to know what’s happening.

“Please feyi take this man to madam ,him talk say he wan watch plate make we give am good”the first sales girl told the other that just entered.

The feyi girl stared at me curiously then shook her head.

“Sir, please come to this side madam is this way”.

She seems more beautiful, even polite, than the first girl.

I thanked and followed her to the inner room where I met with the madam.

I pleaded and pleaded,finally she was able to have pity and agreed.

“Uchechi!!”

The first girl answered her.

“Take him to the kitchen and monitor him oo, make person no steal my utensils”the madam instructed.

“Yes madam”.

I followed the rude girl to the kitchen.

“Oga you see all these dishes start washing you might leave here by 9:00,so be fast”.

“Yes mah”I replied.

She yelled at me about calling her mah again.

“I am not an old woman”.

She sneered and left the room.

Feyi came in with more dishes and found me confused on where to start.

“Oga don’t worry I will come and help you,if I get any chance”.

I smiled back.

“Thank you,…. please can I ask for a favor?”

She nodded attentively.

“Please my daughter is at home alone, can I get her here so she can wait for me,I won’t be long, she will be so worried if she doesn’t see me soon as expected”.

“Ok…but be fast because we will be needing plates soon”.

“Thank you”.

I put off the kitchen apron and ran out of the place.

I got home and heard Special crying out loudly. Opening the door she hugged me crying.

“You’re a big girl now,stop crying”I frowned at her.

She nodded and wiped her face.

I carried her on my back and picked up her mat.

She eventually slept off on the way there.

I got to the restaurant and found feyi washing the plates already.

“You didn’t tell me your place is far”.

She asked, a little annoyed.

“I am sorry”I replied, truly I was sorry.

“It’s okay, I got into an argument with my Madam but it’s okay”.

I thanked her ,she rinsed her hands and asked me to continue from where she stopped.

I sprayed the mat at the other corner and slowly laid special there.

Pat her back till I was convinced that she is deep into it.

I quickly took over the dishes, and two of the sales girls came in mumbling.

“The man said it’s not what he ordered now, this food will be wasted”.

“We can serve it to another person nah”

“Madam said we should throw it”.

“Can I take the meat?”

“Girl behave like a babe nah what kind of village mindset do you have”.

The other one snapped back then she turned and gave me the plate of food.

“Oga dishwasher, throw the food in the trash can outside”.

I nodded happily.

I was praying silently that they won’t change their minds,as soon they’re gone,

I opened the food,it was untouched and fresh,with a huge turkey wing.

I quickly carried it over to Special.

“Hey baby”.

I shook her gently on her legs.

She woke up stretching,her hands and legs on the mat.

As soon she saw the food ,the sleep vanished immediately.

“Thanks Daddy”she snapped excitedly then said a little prayer before she started devouring it.

I went back to my work and washed happily.

The madam came into the kitchen and raged.

“You haven’t even washed enough plates and who is that?”

She pointed at Special who was devouring the turkey.

I quickly stood up straight politely ,my hands at my back in respect.

“Madam, she is my daughter,she can’t stay alone so I brought her here”.

“Inside my kitchen? Oya young girl outside be fast about it”she yelled at confused Special.

” Sorry mah”.

Special was still confused on what to do ,she didn’t even know how she entered here. She saw a glass back door and went out through there.

She sprayed her mat at the door post and continued eating.

“Every crawling thing will enter my kitchen, Mr man be fast”.

 Madam murmured with a hisd and left.

As soon as the madam left ,I ran back  and opened the back door to check on my sweet girl.

“Are you cold?”

She shook her head, but she was obviously cold. The weather was very cold outside the restaurant.

I removed my shirt and put it on her.

“Stay close don’t move out okay ,it’s dark and can be dangerous,I will be seeing you from the glass door okay?”

She nodded ,still chewing her meat.

“Daddy let me help you”.

She offered as I turned to go back inside.

“Next time, now they need the plates very fast ,and it’s breakable so you can’t handle it very well”.

I smiled and pecked her forehead.

“Daddy will bring more turkey”

I whisper.

“I am already filled up”she replied, showing me her big stomach.

“Take away then”.

I replied and entered the kitchen door open,but fortunately Feyi was there already.

“Plates,I need plates!”

“I am sorry”.

I quickly ran into the kitchen and shut the door.I started washing again.

It was 11:00pm,the sales girls were tidying up to go home. There are still plates to wash.

We couldn’t go home tonight,so I begged the madam to let us sleep in the kitchen.

At some point she took pity and agreed

I thanked her.

I carried Special in and slept on a chair,while she slept on the mat.

Midnight she came and sat on my laps

I cuddled her and we slept off.

Then by 3am, I decided to manage the mat with her since that’s the only way for her to sleep on it, having me beside her.

**SPECIAL’S POV**

The next morning, Daddy and I went back home,we bathed ,brushed and changed into  new clothes.

Daddy was happy with his new job at the restaurant,I am happy too, I ate fully last night.

We arrived at the restaurant and he was asked to clean and mob since we came earlier than the cleaner.

I watched daddy,clean the whole place up,I helped dusting the table and chairs,after he gave it the finishing touches.

The first customer came in.

“Feyi!!”

Dad called one aunty working there so that she could come and attend to the customer.

“Kelvin?”

The voice that called was coming from behind us.It’s the new customer.

How did he know my dad’s name?

Dad gazed at him thoughtfully while I watched the two curiously.

“Walter?”Daddy said slowly as if he wasn’t sure.

“Kelvin!!”the man snapped.

“Walter”Dad screamed in excitement.

The man stood up and the two hugged happily and exchanged their manly handshakes.

“What’s the meaning of this Kelvin,I don’t understand”.

He asked Dad, who shamefully smiled back.

“The world is a mysterious place my friend, this is where I ended up”Dad said sadly but he was smiling.

Uncle Walter was staring at him with both hands on his waist as if he was looking at a wonder. He grabbed the mop from daddy and throw it aside.

“Please drop that mop,come and join me, how can you be doing this kind of work, Kelvin of all people..”he stopped and gazed at me

“Is that your daughter?”

Daddy beckoned on me.

I went shyly and greeted the Uncle.

“She looked just like her mother”.

Daddy nodded and  carried me on his laps.

“Put her on the seat nah”.

“I prefer carrying her”

Dad insisted.

“You are fond of her I guess, what’s her name?”

“Her name is special”.

“Lovely name,you must be special to dad right”he teased me.

I nodded shyly, hiding my face on Dad’s chest.

“Where are those girls,please tell them what you want”.

The Uncle told Dad.

Aunty Feyi came to us smiling,she patted my hair.

“Sir, what will I get for you?”

She asked dad politely, she seemed like a new person all of a sudden.

“Emmm rice”, Daddy replied.

“Jollof?”

Dad nodded.

“And meat?”

“Any meat”

“You have to be specific,”She replied softly.

“Get him big turkey please,also same for our Special”

Uncle Walter said.

“Special?.Oh his daughter, pardon me”.

She chuckled and left.

“What Happened Kelvin,you know let’s not talk now ,you will tell me everything when we get to my place”.

Dad nodded without looking up.

Aunty Uchechi and Feyi came with trays of food.

“Thanks uncle Walter”

I said happily.

I prayed and started eating my food,after the food we went with uncle Walter to where he parked his car.

The car was very big and fine,I was in the back seat all alone. It reminds me of mummy Cynthia’s car. I missed her So much.

After hours of driving,we got to a huge building and he hunked.

The gateman opened the door.

He was wearing a uniform similar to a police  uniform but it’s yellow.

We got down from the car and Daddy carried me and walked behind him as he led the way,I could tell he was happy to meet an old friend.

I was left to be entertained by his maids,while him and dad chatted in the cinema house.

**KELVIN’S POV**

“I am really sorry to hear about all that, Kelvin,I can’t believe you didn’t  ,even me. After what you did for me,it’s not cool man,you helped us and when it’s your turn you decided to do it all alone”.

“I lost my contacts Walter ,I sold the phone a long time ago”.

“Look,I am taking you with me to Abuja, you need to stop this embarrassment of a job”he mouthed.

I was overjoyed at the offer.

“Thanks very much Kelvin”.

I bowed .

“Please stop that Kelvin, I owe you a lot more than this, you helped me to be who I am today, I have been thinking about you some time ago. But there’s a little problem, your daughter will have to stay back until you are comfortable enough to bring her to Abuja”.

My face turned pale at that statement.

“But..”

“You said she is a boarding school student right? If you work harder for a few months,you will take her after her common entrance,then she will start her secondary school in Abuja”.

I nodded slowly.

It will be hard for her, but I have no other choice. All I have to do is work harder than ever, then come back and get her. Also, I won’t put her in that stupid school again.

“I was thinking about changing her school, something happened and…”.

“That won’t be a problem at all, my sister owns a school here so she will be perfectly taken care of ,let’s enroll her in my sister’s school”.

I felt satisfied with that part.

“Thanks Walter”.

“Don’t worry ,in a few months you will see her again”.

“Do they have a visiting day?”

“Sure, every last Saturday of the month,you can come visit her every visiting day or a regular day, my sister will approve of it anyway”.

I was now very much relieved.

“I appreciate it so much,God bless you Walter”.

“Amen”.

He  replied and laughed a little.

“You know, I won’t forget the day you helped us,street rats, that time we ran after your convoys,you gave us 5m each,good people don’t deserve to be suffering bro”.

I smiled back

“It’s just my father’s money then”.

“Still most young billionaires don’t help the poor,it hurt me when I saw you in that condition,I doubted it at first and decided to call your name,things  are about to change for your good, Kelvin”.

EPISODE 14

**KELVIN’S POV *

We slept at his place that night. After we were done watching a football match, I went to the room where Special was staying and decided to talk to her about what Walter said.

 Into the dark room,I found a rechargeable lantern,I put it on and  walked to her,gently tapping her leg.

“Special…”.

She rolled to my side and held me tight,sleepily. I smiled back at her.

“If you are awake,can we talk?”

I whispered.

She shook her head.

“Come on ,we need to talk honey,”I laughed.

She rubbed her eyes ,I sat down beside her then carried her up and made her sit on my lap.

“Uncle Walter and I discussed it ,and I want you to go back to school”.

I started this way cus I know she loves schooling.

“Really!I am going back to school?”

She snapped excitedly.

I nodded,she hugged me happily.

“A boarding school,”I added.

Her face turned pale and sad all of a sudden .

I was afraid she would say no but that wasn’t the result.

“I will go dad,I am not a little girl anymore “

I felt bad,like she is not going to miss me judging from her reply, but at the same time, my baby is growing into a smart,strong and independent young girl.It felt good to see.

“So..you agreed to go?”

I was surprised.

She nodded slowly then added immediately.

“But on one condition”.

She put up a finger like a little madam.

“Yes boss”I chuckled.

“You will come visit me every visiting day no excuse will ever be accepted!!!”

Her eyes widened ,it made me laugh a bit.

“I promise”.

I put my hand up and swore to her.

She hugged me and sobbed.

“I am going to miss you daddy so much”.

“Hey …I promise it’s just temporary, as soon as I settle down in Abuja, I will come take to your dad’s big mansion”

I winked.

“I want my dad’s big hug instead,i want nothing but to be with my dad”

She continued sobbing.

I hugged her more tightly  and released her,her face cupped in my hands ,I damp her tears dry with thumbs.

“Don’t worry,Uncle Walter’s sister is the owner of the school ,you don’t have to be scared, okay?”

She nodded ,I pecked her forehead.

“When are you leaving for Abuja daddy?”

“Next week,I will spend the whole of this week with my Special, just the two of us,we will go to any place you love to go to”.

She hugged me again.

“Now get to bed it’s late already”.

“Good night dad”.

She pecked my forehead and went back to bed.

I could tell she was trying to act okay with the boarding school decision,sometimes her attitude surprises me.

I decided to sleep on the bed together, she got excited and hugged me.

**SPECIAL’S POV**

Uncle Walter gave dad his car keys the next day.

We both entered the car.

“Daddy can you drive?”I asked excitedly, looking at those buttons in front of us.

“Your dad is talented in all aspect, my baby”.

He said with an air of pride,I could sense his joy in driving this too.

He started the engine,I gave him a tiny supportive clap,happily.

“We are driving!!!”

He honked for the gateman ,who opened the gate with immediate effect.

Uncle Walter walked towards us,daddy noticed and waited for him.

“Boss,When are you coming back you know we have to go visit my sister and tell her about Special?”

He is a very good man ,he sounds so calm and nice too.

“Please Walter stop embarrassing me with that boss,call me kelvin please, and I won’t take time,just to go for a joy ride with Special” Daddy replied happily.

“Well in that case, take this with you,1130 pin”he mouthed and gave daddy a credit card.

“Walter, I don’t think it’s really necessary,it’s just a ride”.

“Just take it please”Uncle persisted.

Dad reluctantly accepted.

“Thanks Walter I appreciate”.

“Thank you uncle”

I shouted happily.

He smiled and patted my hair then Dad engaged the gear and we drove off.

“Yeah!!!!”

I screamed out happily at the speed, feeling the air messing around with my hair.

Dad is a very good driver, he seems so confident with his skills,I wonder if he once had a car. We got to a big restaurant.

“Hungry?”

I nodded.

“Me too?”

He said smiling.

We came out of the car,the security man respected dad like nobody ever did before my eyes,he postulated and asked us to park our car at a particular spot.

Dad acted so boldly like he is used to all that but he was embarrassed by the man and asked him not to postulate for him again.

We entered the restaurant. It was so huge and fancy.

I was wowed by the interior designs,it was so close to the heaven I imagined.

“Dad,this place is so beautiful and biii…..g”.

I said holding him tight,as if I would get lost if I don’t.

We got a table and  sat down.

“What do you want to eat?”Dad whispered.

“Anything “I whispered back.

It made him chuckle softly.

He told the waitress our order and within a few minutes, he came back with foodies!!

**KELVIN’S POV**

I watched her eat happily, I am really going to miss her ,I will make sure, I visit her every visiting day no matter what or how busy my schedule is.

I will work hard and make sure I  get her back with me and stay together in Abuja.

“Dad here”.

She interrupted my thoughts by offering to feed me.

“Open your mouth”she instructed.

I smiled and did and instructed

She heaped a spoonful into mouth,o swallowed and put a thumb up.

“Goood”.

After the meal ,we went to shoprite ,and she had a lot of fun rides.

“It’s  4pm honey let’s get going”

I told her , carried her down from her ride.

She picked up her new teddy and jogged to our car.

**SPECIAL”S POV**

After we got home,we freshen up and went with uncle Walter,he said he will take us to his sister.

When we got to the school, it was very large and looked very expensive.

“Good day mah”

Dad mouthed.

I did the same.

“He is the person that helped me back then. I told you that he gave me money when you needed support to build this school”.

“Oh welcome sir”.

She doesn’t seem very impressed with uncle Walter’s statement about daddy being the key support of the school’s foundation but she sounds nice.

“And this must be your daughter ,she’s cute”.

She said, I blushed , leaning on daddy.

“Thanks “dad responded.

“So she will be staying with us until when?”

“Maybe for …we don’t  know yet but it’s not going to extend this present term,She’s in basic 6 so maybe after her common entrance”Uncle Walter replied.

“Alright”.

I used my finger to count the months remaining for the common entrance exam.

“So Mr Kelvin please fill this form”.

She handed a paper to my dad.

“Our school is known for being the best in the country, and our fair treatment to our children, but we don’t like debtors”.

Uncle Walter got provoked by her threat,his brows arched tightly.

“Gina,I told you he is the man behind our success, and you…”.

“It’s okay Walter,I will pay before the common entrance”.

“Good so is she starting today?”Gina asked.

“No next week”

Dad said a bit sad.

“Alright, welcome to our school honey, I hope you will enjoy your time here”

She said to me.

“I hope so too”

I replied.

“I like that, smart girl”

She giggled.

“Okay nah big sis,we will be going, she is like a daughter to me so please take good care of her “

Uncle Walter stated.

Daddy went on his knees , It embarrassed uncle Walter when he did that.

“Please stand up kelvin”he snapped at Dad,who Ignored him.

“Please take good care of her ,she’s everything I have, her past experience is so heartbreaking I don’t want her to go into hell again because i am not with her please mah”daddy pleaded.

“Oh please stand ,you don’t have to kneel and beg  me, she’s a daughter to me too,so she’s totally safe with me, so don’t be scared I promise you”.

Dad looked happier and relieved now

“Thanks, I appreciate it”.

He stood and I hugged him tightly

“I will miss you Daddy”.
