THE SILENT TRUTH Part 1 – Dickson’s diary
“What have you done, Mira? It was not among our plans to k!ll him!” I said to Mira who had already had her white gown stained with blood.
“I know Emily, but I needed to do this. If I didn’t, this man wouldn’t have given us enough money. Now that he’s gone, we have the whole money in the briefcase all to ourselves.” she said getting away from the bed.
My sister, Mira, and I had been into runs ever since my dad got bedridden. He was the breadwinner of the family and so, our source of livelihood. We needed to do something to help mum lessen her burden and also get money faster to get dad to stand on his feet again.
“So what are we going to do with the corpse now?” I asked Mira as my fear piqued.
Mira paced around the room, thinking hard. “We have to dispose of the body, quickly,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “If anyone finds out, we’ll be in serious trouble.”
Mira continued, her eyes fixed on the briefcase filled with cash. “I know a place where we can dump him,” she said. “But we have to move fast before anyone comes looking for him.”
Just as we begin wrapping up our dead client, his phone rang. Mira and I panicked. We are about to be caught, if not now, soon.
“We have to pick up the call, Emily. And know who the person on the call is. The nature of the person would help us at least speed up our actions.” Mira said to me with fear in her eyes. I knew she was trying to be brave. She has always been the brave one that led in most of the activities we do, but then, I could still see fear in her eyes.
“You shouldn’t say anything, Emily”. She told me and picked up the call.
“Hello chief, what’s up na. You haven’t been replying my texts. I’m on my way already. I’ve finally agreed to the two nights down. Please keep my money intact.” It was a female voice. She stopped to hear a response. She didn’t. Mira and I were so quiet. Surprised and tensed.
The lady then hung up the call. We felt a bit relieved. It was a lady and a fellow cohort, hence, the chances of tracing us are slim.
“We need to get out of here now!” Mira yelled and we both worked together to wrap the body in a bedsheet and drag it out of the room. We made our way down the stairs and out of the house, careful to avoid any suspicious neighbors. The briefcase was heavy, and I struggled to keep up as Mira led the way.
As we walked down a dark alley, I couldn’t help but feel like we would be caught. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up, and I shivered despite the warm night air.
Suddenly, a lady matched into the gate. In fear, we both drew back and kept the briefcase behind us. We knew it was the lady that had called chief earlier to inform him about her coming.
The lady was in a black dress. She was on a scarf and a black glasses, all to hide her identity. But then, her scent seemed familiar.
She pulled on her black glasses and on realizing whom she was, Mira and I shouted; “MUM!!!”.
