Troubled Waters Final Part 3 – Necelly Newton
I got into bed early after a stressful day, Sandra was still in the sitting room engrossed with Zee World. After the previous day’s drama, she has been trying to get her ‘jiggy’ back and wear off the awkwardness that had been following her. It was past midnight, I was deep in sleep but I could feel the cold crawling under my skin so I woke up, it was dark and a heavy storm was tormenting the night. The power company has ceased the light so I reached the nightstand for my phone and once I got it, I turned on the flashlight and saw the window wide open. I looked over to the other side of the bed, it was empty.
“She’s still watching TV?” I thought to myself, as I got out of bed
I went straight to shut the window then I walked to the sitting room. Halfway there, I noticed a figure in the dark hallway but it disappeared just before I could get a closer look. I entered the sitting room and Sandra wasn’t there, she was nowhere in the house. The sitting room window was wide open, the same as the dining room.
That’s strange!
Those two windows are never open, I always ensured they were shut to avoid dust from saturating the house but there they were, open with rain water coming in and soaking the entire furniture. I was a bit furious,
“Why would Sandra leave these windows open, ehn! Now, look at my expensive furniture” I muttered as I went to close the windows. I could hear the trickling sound coming from the kitchen and that’s when I knew something was up.
I tiptoed to the kitchen door, and gently pushed it open to see the windows ajar, the sink tap was on and the water overflooded the sink. I managed to shut the windows and went to find a bucket and a mop to clean up the mess. As soon as I walked into the hallway again, I saw a figure walk past without a word
“Babe? Sandy? What’s the matter?” I asked but no one answered.
The figure walked into my room and I followed suit. I got into the room and no one was there, then I saw the bedroom window open again. I flashed the torchlight to the window and what I saw shook me to the marrow; Sandra was slowly crawling in from the open window looking sinister, old, and wild. I looked into her eyes, my once loving Sandra wasn’t there anymore, something else has taken over.
“The master is here now! You’ve made him angry! He’s here! He’s coming to get you!” Sandra yelled with a cranky old voice as she crawled her way up to the wall.
I could hear heavy footsteps outside the door, it was growing louder and louder till
BOOM!
My bedroom door came crashing down. The storm outside was growing by the second so any call for help I’d make at this point will not be heard by the neighbors as the wind slapped heavily on the roof. I was stuck in a living nightmare that I can’t wake up from. Nimua the Queen of the Damned entered my bedroom in the flesh flanked by the Leviathan,
“Blood of Jesus!” escaped my lips,
“You were warned. Your time is up. It is time to submit to the master!” Nimua said,
I quickly reached for the anointing oil on the reading table in my room, I got hold of it and then,
“I stand on the authority that created the heavens and the earth” I declared boldly. For the first time since my encounter with Nimua and her shenanigans, I felt courage building inside me for some reason.
“The Bible says that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, every knee must bow so, therefore, you foul spirit…” I prayed with such imposing authority that had Nimua bewildered as she made two steps back.
As I prayed violently, I could hear Nimua speaking Latin or maybe she was making incantations but I didn’t care. All of a sudden, Sandra fell from the wall where she mounted. She kept on screaming as the wind and thunder claps heightened outside.
It was a war of words!
I was yelling all sorts of prayers I had learned from my time in the Pentecostal church. Even though the rain made the atmosphere cold, I was sweating profusely with my shirt getting soaked. When I was done, I opened my eyes, and behold, Nimua was gone; the coast was clear. The power company brought back the light and Sandra was on the floor weeping. I went over and consoled her till she gently slept off in my arms.
There was peace and calm for the first time in a long time since I came back from my crayfish trip.
The following morning, I woke up to breakfast in bed from my sweet loving Sandra. She was dazzling in her cute nightwear and her ever bright eyes which complimented her beauty. She looked me in the eye with an enthralling smile and said
“Sugar boo, the storm is finally over”
She gave me a warm hug as she sat by the bed to watch me eat we had light laughter escaping our lips in between whilst we had a couple’s time.
“Babe, you can take the tray I’m done,” I told her.
She smiled at me again as I noticed her countenance change and she brought out a kitchen knife,
“Sugar boo, is the storm truly over?” she said like a possessed person,
Before I could reach her, Sandra cut her throat open as blood gushed out, splattering on my face and the bed. She fell lifeless in a pool of her blood.
I sort after tears during Sandra’s burial but none was forthcoming. I stared with tearless eyes as her cold body lay in state at her father’s compound. Weeping and sorrow governed the day as my beautiful would-be bride was laid to rest and I could only watch in silence. It was hard to swallow the fact that I won’t see her face again, her smile, her touch…
“If only I never went for that nonsense crayfish, she’d still be here” I thought to myself in anger,
The burial ceremony was still in session as I got up from my chair in anger, walked straight to my car as everyone looked on in shock.
I entered the car, turned the ignition and the engine revved. I sat there while the car warmed up. Sandra’s father ran after me, banging on the window for me to come out. I only gave him a sharp look before I zoomed off, kicking up dust in the wake of my exit.
Within the next 5 hours, I had found my way back to where it all began… At the lake. The fishermen were there gathering up their tools when I arrived. It was 4pm, so I pleaded to be taken out into the water but they declined citing that day as a day forbidden to enter the lake. I opted to lodge in a hotel in town to enable me return to the lake the next day.
Whilst in my hotel room, I had just gotten out of the shower when I heard a knock on the door. I wasn’t expecting anyone so I called the hotel reception’s attention but they swore no one came looking for me. Quickly I knew it must be one of Nimua’s many mind games so I answered the door only to find a strange boy standing in the doorway,
“Did she send you? Tell her she doesn’t need to play games anymore cos I’m here for her and her master” I barked at the boy,
The strange boy looked so fragile and scared as she whispered “You shouldn’t have come here but we’re glad you did”
I was confused for a second. If he wasn’t one of Nimua’s minions, who is he then?
“My father sent me here. A missionary in the community where u encountered the water demon Nimua” the boy said whilst he looked around the hallway as if to be sure no one was eavesdropping.
I quickly invited him into the room for more talks,
“You know Nimua?” I asked him curiously
“Who doesn’t know Nimua? She has been tormenting travellers around these parts for long. She attaches herself to you through a medium and never leaves till you break that medium. You must have something that’s giving her access to you, what is it sir?”
I was trying to remember and then, my mind flashed back to the necklace that I’ve kept trying to get rid of to no avail. It was in the glove compartment of my car which I left at the airport when I boarded the flight to the South.
“Do you know anyone who can reach it? You can only get rid of the necklace by fire” the boy said,
I paused for a second and wondered how the boy had all this information or maybe this is her giving me false hope again like she did before killing Sandra.
“How do you know all these?” I asked the boy as I grabbed his two arms incase he tried to get funny but instead, he was legit scared when he answered
“I had a vision… About you. I wasn’t sure till I saw you at the lake trying to board a canoe and it became clear to me” he said, “You were going to give yourself to their master. That would’ve been a grave mistake. He never stops, after you, it’d be your family next”
“He’s already taken my fiancé. I… I loved her so much” I said with a broken voice, “if only I didn’t go to fish for crayfish she’d still be here now… In my arms. We… We’d have been a happy couple” I broke into tears.
I consoled myself as I picked up my phone and dialled for a friend of mine. He didn’t pick so I called someone else who didn’t pick either. It was getting to 7pm, the boy mentioned the necklace needed to be destroyed before nightfall. Everyone I called was out of touch, it got frustrating but the boy insisted. Finally, I called my mother and narrated the ordeal to her. She had compassion and without further hesitation, she embarked on the quest to get rid of the necklace.
After 45 minutes, mother called to tell of the obstacle she encountered; the car door refused to open. All efforts even by the airport staff had proved abortive so I instructed for the window to be shattered… Anything to get hold of the necklace. After little struggle with the window, it broke and she had the necklace incinerated. According to mother, a loud scream echoed inside the walls of the incinerator when the necklace burned. The news gave me hope that deliverance was just a tip away.
I and the boy headed out around past 9pm, we met the boy’s father in the hotel lobby. Quite the gentleman he was, dressed in just casuals and he introduced himself as Dan the Evangelist. His bold words while we talked reinvigorated my faith once again. I was ready to tear down whatever took my Sandra from me and end this nightmare once and for all.
We marched out with authority into the night to go face-to-face with Nimua and her so-called master. The time was 11pm when we arrived the lake, there was no single soul in sight. It was just the sound of owls howling in a distance and cricket chirping that filled the air. I could feel an ominous aura as white fog covered the environment. Dan the Evangelist told us to wait behind whilst he walked to the bank of the river alone, he started praying in a foreign language that I couldn’t understand. His boy clinged to me,
The water surface started rumbling, huge bubbles popped which created a ripping wave that paved way to the emergence of an eerie being. It struck fear in the boy and I but his father, Dan the Evangelist stood his ground at the bank of the lake as he prayed down heaven. A tumultuous wind came to trouble the environment as the being spoke, deep and fear-inspiring was its voice. It seemed to communicate with Dan the Evangelist as the two talked in same foreign language Dan had earlier used in his prayers.
Suddenly, I felt the boy’s grip on my forearm become tighter than normal. Then, at the bank of the river, Dan the Evangelist turned towards me with fear in his eyes, he pointed at my direction as I looked behind and behold, the boy had turned to Nimua.
I and Dan the Evangelist was standing between the proverbial devil and the deep blue sea. At this moment, a mighty wind arose, pulling the trees within the area as the water overflood its bank. It was utter chaos
“Hold my hands and pray with me!” Dan yelled due to the noise of the wind.
We held hands in agreement as we prayed with such vexation. Just then, I heard a loud ringing sound in my ear and a white flash from nowhere blinded my eyes. When I regained consciousness, I found myself back in the city inside the water, just at the gates of ‘HELLHEIM: LAKE OF THE DAMNED’. Something took me through the gates as it flung open on its own, I could hear a crowd chanting inside
“Come! Come! The King awaits! Come! Come! The King awaits!” were the words the crowd chanted.
I was taken into what looked like an old cabin in the woods, the interior was filled with creatures that looked like Ala-Muki. Their faces told the story of the Roman empire when crowds delighted in the battle of gladiators. At the far end of the room, I saw a man… Or what looked like a man sitting on a dark throne that had black smokes circulating it. His eyes was filled with darkness, he had a broken wing and thorny crown sitting upon his head. I was brought before him, I believe he is the master. He must be the sailor whom Ala-Muki sang about during my first encounter with her.
“Who are you?” he asked with a growling voice,
“I am Chukwujekwu Ijemba, son of the living God and a child of the light. I do not fear you, demon” I uttered with such audacious authority.
The man growled and looked side by side,
“Who stands behind you?”
I quickly looked behind me and saw no one. I suddenly found myself speaking Latin, I didn’t understand the words I spoke but I said them and by the time I was done, confusion arose in the midst of the crowd as the creatures began to fight amongst themselves.
“Who brought this man here? Take him away! Take him away!” the master cried but his subjects were busy fighting amongst themselves.
I watched as the master got up from his throne to address the embittered subjects but instead they began to attack him too.
The pandemonium was uncontrollable and all the while, I only watched. Immediately, a white light flashed before me and I found myself on the ground by the river soaked in water. Dan the Evangelist was waving his hands in praises as the wind settled. I was weak so I leaned on a nearby canoe to get on my feet
“Is it over?” I asked him and he smiled at me
“it is over”
I bent my head and started weeping. Only if I knew this earlier than now, I wouldn’t have gone through the torment I experienced. Sandra would still be here and everything would’ve been different but in all, I was still grateful that it was all over.
The nightmare has been defeated…
Dan the Evangelist sighed heavily as we were walking back to the car, he put a hand on my shoulder with soothing words he said,
“My work here is done”
For a moment, I thought what happened to Sandra was about to happen to him so I panicked and required of him the meaning of his words but he assured me nothing of such will happen instead he told me tbat I’ll soon understand what he meant when he said those words. I shrugged it off as we walked for a while back to where a car was waiting for us, I turned back and he was gone… Vanished. I heard a voice say to me,
“Be of good faith, for I am with you”
At that moment, I understood and a smile crossed my lips.
