SOMEONE LIVES IN THE MIRROR – Emily Naomi
“I’d like to resign Ma”, I heard the nanny say. This is the 30th nanny that has left Mrs. Mobat’s house since the big death in the house.
I walked closely to the door to eavesdrop more on the conversation but I was startled by the noise from 7 years old Annie. I was the house cleaner.
Annie is Mrs Mobat’s only daughter, a very awkwardly silent girl who hasn’t spoken a word since birth but does other activities. She spends most of her time sitting quietly opposite the mirror in the hallway of the castle, giggling, snorting, communicating with signs and bringing up her new toys, cloths to show off at it. She started showing this habit when she was 2 years old but the apt silence was what even the doctors could not explain.
I spawned around immediately in shock upon hearing the noise and alas, I saw her holding a toy made of beads which looked like she dropped it to startle me as she noticed me tiptoeing. It was a weird situation especially coming from a child like her. Her obsession with the mirror explains it all.
Mrs. Mobat is a widow once married to the most famous business mogul in the town. She had two children for him, Micheal and Annie. The big death took place 6 years ago.
Micheal died in an accident with his Dad Mr. Mobat on their way to pick Annie and her Mom from the airport after Annie’s successful heart transplant when she just turned a year old. Some says it was a projected attack, some says the things he did when he was alive came for him; nobody knew the exact cause of the accident. Micheal was fond of Annie as he was 4 years older than her especially since she was sick.
I smiled at Annie and clanged to the bowl of cloths I was carrying and walked past her in fear and ran downstairs to put the cloths away while she kept staring awkwardly at me till I was out of sight.
Annie has been this way since her Mom went into depression upon hearing her husband’s death and haven’t had time for herself or Annie which made her to continue looking for a nanny for her. She didn’t bother to know why they kept resigning because she was heavily depressed. She kept everyone out of her life even Annie and on rare occasions, she will come asking after her. She was so down in despair that she trusted her only surviving daughter into the hands of the nanny but they all kept leaving.
I knew what was wrong, I feel a life form aura coming from the mirror. I once cleaned the hallway and heard voices and no one was around except the big broad mirror that have stood there since the house was built facing me whilst cold shivers ran down my vein. I’ve experienced it on many occasions and it scares me. I was bold enough not to resign like the others because I don’t have anywhere else to go. I guess the nannies could not just take it.
I didn’t have close relationship with any of the nannies because none of them has lasted two weeks in the house.
I used to think Annie was possessed by the mirror and I decided to make it a task to find out why she was so addicted to the mirror that she doesn’t even feel her Mom’s absence in her life.
I woke up around 12 midnight for the first time since I started living with them and decided to go check out the hallway of the house. I sneaked because I had an ulterior motive.
I was not disappointed as I saw Annie sitting there again but this time I was shocked.
Annie was talking, I heard voices too from the mirror. My whole body was engulfed with goosebumps, I wanted to scream but I couldn’t as my heart pounded.
Suddenly, I heard Annie say, “Dad, what’s t the matter? Why are you quiet?”. I noticed the voice stopped talking too.
I felt a warm sensation from my legs and looked down but noticed I have urinated on myself, I was sweating profusely. I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me.
“Gracie is here”, “the voice from the mirror said.
I woke up and found myself in a hospital bed with Annie sitting and staring at me smiling.
After 5 minutes of blurred vision, I recalled everything that happened and wanted to scream but Annie spoke to me for the first time since she was born.
“I’m sorry you met me speaking with my Dad, and yes I can talk but I chose not to and Dad had been helping me maintain that by taking away my speech during daytime and giving it back during night”. Annie said.
“He died but he never left the house, he said a committed man never completely leaves his house, I hope you can keep this secret between us, don’t worry, I got Mom to pay for your hospital bills. I promise to always to talk you when necessary, Dad has agreed to that”. Annie added.
I was petrified on the hospital bed and just lay there because I have always known that there was someone living in the mirror all along but the circumstances surrounding it now is beyond my guess.
