The horn from the car sounded twice. I glanced back again and heaved a sigh.
“I will come back to your church, madam. Yes, it was God who brought me here, but today is not the right time or day. I will find time to come and worship with you. But first, I need to see this lady whom I came here to see. Thank you so much for your help.”
I heard the car door open.
“Sir, let us go. We don’t have much time.”
“Just a minute, please.”
The usher didn’t say a word to me. She just kept staring at me.
“Goodbye, ma.”
I turned and started walking towards the car.
“Jesus loves you.” The usher shouted to me.
I lifted my hands.
I got to the car and opened the front door.
A slender-looking man whom I suspected to be the driver, was seated in the driver’s seat.
I greeted him.
“Boss good evening.”
He glanced at me and nodded his head without a reply.
“So do you want to attend service or what? You just kept us waiting.”
“I am sorry I came here since and waited for you. I thought I was even standing at the wrong place. Well that was when I found this usher. She was trying to woo me into attending her church.”
“It’s fine.”
The driver changed gears and started driving us.
“So where are we going to now?” I asked.
“To a comfortable place to talk.”
“This car, is it how it works over here in Abuja?”
“How do you mean?”
“So you mean one can work as a hotel attendant and still afford a car like this with a driver attached?”
“It is not mine.”
“So who owns it? Your hotel?”
“Good evening, Praises.” A female voice wafted into my ears.
It was the voice of Sophia.
I turned back immediately and shouted in shock.
“Jesus!”
She laughed.
“Suprised?”
“You? You?”
“O calm down and listen to me. If I didn’t want you to find me, you will never find me. So just calm down.”
“But… So you both were working together?”
“What do you think? That my staff will betray me behind my back? I instructed her to give you the address of this place. I thought you will turn down the offer and not show up if you realized that the distance to this place was very far. To my surprise, you did. Now I can see you can go any limit just to know what happened last night.”
“Yes, I can. I can even do more just to know who you are. I planned to go to the police to report the situation if I failed in getting the information myself. And I will report the hotel and everyone involved in this, and expose the secrets.”
“You are too smart for that. You are too smart to even think of something like that, Praises. You will fail. And just like she told you at the hotel, one wrong move and you will be dead. Trust me.”
“You boast about taking a person’s life like it means nothing to you. What kind of of a woman are you?”
“I am a kind one. But I hate to be taken for granted. That’s all. If you are nice to me, I will be nice to you. But if you are wicked to me, I will turn the other side of my face which you will not like.”
“But you were wicked to me. You were wicked to drug my drink because you were desperate to have a child of your own.”
“Yes I drugged you. But it wasn’t out of wickedness. It was out of love. I drugged you hoping it will soften your heart. But you ended up sleeping off like a tired donkey. I guess I laced the juice with an overdose.”
“Did you do it? That is all I want to know.”
The car pulled over at a spot and the back door opened. The hotel attendant stepped down from the car.
“Madam, good night ma.”
“Good night dear. Make sure you come to work very early tomorrow morning, okay.”
“I will.”
She shut the car door and waved to me. I didn’t wave back. I had lost trust and likeness for her knowing she was working with Sophia all this while and only deceiving me.
“Patrick.”
“Yes madam.”
“You are close to your area na.”
“Yes, Madam.”
“You don’t need to take me home, okay. You can just drop me here and I will drive myself home.”
“Okay, Madam. But make I come tomorrow come pick you from house?”
“No. We would just meet at the hotel tomorrow.”
“Okay, Madam.”
She picked up her purse, brought out a stack of cash, and gave it to Patrick.
“Have this. It is for your wife. Buy here something, Okay.”
Patrick turned in excitement and collected the money.
“Thank you, Madam. Thank you.”
He unbuckled his seat belt and stepped down from the car.
“Madam thank you. My wife go happy well well.”
“It is fine, okay. We would meet at the hotel tomorrow.”
“Okay, madam.”
Sophia stepped down from the back seat of the car and took over the driver’s seat.
“So you visit the hotel every day? Is that what you do? Take men to the hotel to drug them and sleep with them?”
“I own the hotel, Praises. It is one of my many assets in Abuja.”
I chuckled.
“Another lie? You’ve been lying to me since yesterday. Telling lies I don’t know and changing mouth from this to that. First, you own all the cars. Then I realized you didn’t own the cars, and everything belonged to your customers. Then you owned the house, now it turned out to be a hotel. And eventually, the hotel became your own. I just want to know one thing, and that is why I am still sitting in this car with you. Just tell me. Did you sleep with me after drugging me?”
“Why do you want to know? Of what benefit will it be to you? Did you feel me touch you? Or dream that I touched you? Or did you feel that you had an erection while you slept? So why are you asking?”
“Stop driving. Just…”
“Yes, I did it.”
My eyes opened wide.
“You…you did what?”

The CONCLUSION

Sophia began to laugh.
“I love the look on your face.”
“Come on, Praises, I can’t do such a thing just to have a child. I can’t. If I should do it, don’t you think I deserve to enjoy it? The major reason I drugged you was because I didn’t want you to know I was gone. I was hoping that the next morning you will pick yourself return home. But instead, you decided to raise dust, by hunting me. Even confronting my staff.”
“So you didn’t do anything to me?”
“No. I didn’t. The moment you slept, I asked my staff to get a room for you and you were lodged in.”
“And who took off my clothes?”
“You had a rough day. Someone had to put you to bed and you needed a new set of clothes. I made that possible.”
“You put me to bed?”
“Na… Not me. Joshua did. You must have seen him this morning before you left. Stop looking at me like that. Come on. Look, I know I am desperate for a child but not as desperate as the way you think. I can’t take advantage of a man. That was why I needed to seek your consent first. Seeing that you were worried and needed answers, I had to turn up and give you the answers you needed.”
I kept looking at Sophia. A part of me believed her, but then I still had my doubts.
“Praises, if you don’t trust me, you can watch the CCTV footage just to confirm. It is all there. I think it will clear your doubts that I didn’t do what you think I did.”
“I believe you.”
“Good.”
There was silence for a while and then I asked.
“So what are you going to do now?”
“I will keep being myself. I don’t know if I will have this feeling again. But for now, I think I am okay just being myself.”
“You don’t want a child anymore? I have friends who will love to do it. Handsome friends.”
She chuckled.
“I am not interested. You caught my attention and that was why I chose to do this with you. They will have to catch my attention as you did.”
I smiled.
“I feel relieved now.”
“I know you will. So when are you going back to Jos?”
“Tomorrow. First thing tomorrow morning. It has been an experience in this city.”
“Would you love to know my place?”
“No. No please.”
Sophia laughed.
“I am not going to drug you?”
“I know. Maybe next time when I come to Abuja again. But for now, I think I want to go to my hotel room and sleep.”
Sophia took a quick turn at the next junction, and then another turn by the right. She pulled over in front of Legendary hotels and suits.
“We are here.” She heaved.
“Yes, we are.”
“So… You have my number, right? You can choose to keep in touch with me or not. I’ll love to meet you again.”
“Me too. Thank you. Thank you for not taking doing it.”
“Thank you for saying no to me. At least this gives me more time to think if this is what I truly want.”
I opened the door and stepped down from the car.
“Goodbye, Sophia.”
“Goodbye”
Sophia’s car drove off and I stood there on the spot watching as her car vanished.
Even though I had left Abuja without the Ten million, I was happy that I left with my dignity and morals intact. And that alone brought me peace of mind.
Nothing in this world can be compared to that.
THE END.
