SOPHIA 1 by Praises Chidera Obiora

So I was invited to Abuja, to speak to writers who intend to make money from their craft.

When I got to my hotel room, I was told that they booked the hotel room for 7 days. Meaning, I had seven days to spend there if I chose to.

I quickly placed a call to John.

“Why 7 days? I thought it was supposed to be a two days program. Friday and Saturday.”

He laughed.

“Yes sir. It was supposed to be a two days program. But we felt we should book more days for you. Do not worry, the hotel will make a refund if you choose not to spend seven days. We have an understanding with them.”

“O wow… So I can wait and leave on Monday then since today is Sunday?”

“Yes sir. Sure. You have seven days to flex Abuja.”

I chuckled and thanked him.

I ended the call and decided to make use of my last day since I will be leaving tomorrow morning for Jos.

So I went on a stroll.

I kept walking, hoping I could clear my head. Think of my next line of action before returning to my hotel room to sleep.

It was a long walk. One I never thought I could take.

I was enjoying the serenity of the environment until I got to a club. I stood in front of the club calculating whether to enter or not. Since I wasn’t dressed for clubbing, I decided that it was better to take a cab, go back to the hotel and just sleep.

I stood beside the road, flagging down the next available taxi when a land cruiser pulled over beside me as I shouted.

“Legendary Hotel.”

The car came to a sudden halt and I ran to it. I opened the door and entered only to discover that it was a woman.

I glanced back to confirm I had entered the right car, then I glanced back at her.

This was no taxi, but a private car that smelt nice and had a soft chair that romanced my hard aching buttocks.

“Hello…” She cooed.

“Good evening, ma.”

“You are the only one standing today.”

“Yes, ma.”

“Where are your colleagues?”

“Colleagues?”

“Sha never mind. I am sure the rain must have driven everyone inside the club. Or probably they’ve gone home with their clients. The weather is very cold and this is the time they are in high demand. I didn’t think I will find one myself.”

I chuckled.

“That is how the market is o. Sometimes there are passengers on the road, other times there are no passengers.”

“Is that what you call them?”

“Yes. Passengers.”

She chuckled.

Very sweetly.

And muttered.

“Passengers?”

“What do you call them?” I asked.

“Clients, or whatever name you choose to give them. But definitely not passengers. I used to have a few clients who stood by the road there, just at the spot you stood. They were very good. But they messed up and I stopped picking them.”

“Eya, so you reject passengers?”

“Client, you mean?”

“Yes.”

“Of cause. When you think I cannot do without you just because you are handsome and have a big P*nis and masculine structure, I show you the door. I am not desperate. I have never been. Especially not for a man. After all, it is my money I am giving to you. All you owe me is a duty to satisfy me sexually and not some unnecessary ego.”

I swallowed hard and glanced back again.

I was speechless.

By this time we were already driving for 20 minutes and I could not understand why a Ten-minute walk on foot from my hotel to the club, had become a twenty-minute drive from the club back to my hotel.

I stared back at the road and didn’t know the route she had taken. The roads were now scanty. It looked more like a residential area.

I kept looking outside as her speeding car zoomed past the lighted street lights. It was like I was in another world entirely.

“Please is Legendary Hotels still far?”

She looked at me and smiled.

“I like you. You are really serious with your job. You have your office where you do business and it is good. Unlike all those guys who will wait for one to book a hotel for them. It pisses me off.”

“So sorry, ma. But legendary hotels is where I am lodged presently.”

“That is what I am saying. You are a businessman. From your face, I can tell you are an Igbo guy and very committed too.”

“Thank you, ma. But…”

“Well, I don’t do guys in the hotel. I prefer to take you to my house. Don’t worry, I have a big bed. It’s strong and I live alone too. You will just have your shower, eat, and show me the man you are made of. If you are good, then we could extend the days. I need a man to make me feel like a woman tonight and to give me a soft massage tomorrow, and maybe a few rounds after.”

My eyes opened wide. It was at that moment it became clear to me that I had not entered a taxi, but the car of a woman who was suffering from sexual hunger.

I cleared my throat. Pinched my hands for no reason at all and began to stutter.

I was only trying hard not to be offensive in my approach.

“Ma… I thought…”

“You thought I was like other women you’ve slept with in a hotel? O come on. I am different and selective about what I want and the kind of guys I pick up. I don’t just pick up any guy.”

“No, what I mean is that…”

“Are you new to this? Because you’ve been stammering for a moment now? Are you just starting this business?”

“No… I…”

“So if you are not just starting, why do you act like a shy guy? Usually, guys your type should have started rubbing the laps of their clients softly and telling them sweet things in their ears. But you haven’t said anything like that. You are not even showing me that tonight is going to be a hot one. Huh? Talk naughty to me.”

“That is because I am not what you think I am.”

She laughed.

“What are you apart from being handsome? You know there is a saying that handsome men have a very small farm tool in front of them. Can you farm well? Or is it because of your small farm tool that you were the only one left at the junction?”

“Madam, I am not an ashawo.”

“A gigolo you mean?”

“Anyone. I was just innocently waiting for a taxi to take me back to my hotel room, and I thought you were a taxi. I didn’t know you were looking for your own thing.”

“What do you mean? You shouted Legendary hotels. That is what the guys do. I heard you clearly.”

“No… Legendary hotel is where I am lodged.”

“You should have told me earlier.”

She sighed and pointed to her dashboard.

“Even if I planned to take you back to where I picked you from, I don’t have enough fuel. And you can’t get a taxi here too. Worse is that this road is dangerous. You could get arrested. It is a GRA. The least you can do now is to sleep at my place. Or drop down and try your luck.”

She stepped on the breaks after pulling over to the side of the scanty road.

“Do you want to drop here?”

“But… You just said there is no car and I may get arrested here.”

“Yes. You can see that I am not lying to you. You can’t get a public transport that will take you back by this time. And you may get arrested if you are seen roaming around here. I think the best option is to come sleep at my place.”

I heaved a sigh and looked out the car window. The rumbling of thunder tore right through the sky from a distance. Its loud terrific sound made me shudder like a chicken.

“It is about to rain.”

“Yeah. It’s your choice.”

I swallowed hard and turned to her. She kept smiling and biting her lips.

“I… I think I will spend the night at your place.”

Without saying a word, she turned on the ignition of her car and in seconds we were back on the lonely road again.

“What brought you to Abuja?”

“I came for a writers seminar.”

“You are a writer?”

“Yes, I am.”

“Written any books?”

“Yes. I have written a few.”

“Great. So what’s your name?”

“Praises… Praises Obiora.”

She glanced at me.

“Name doesn’t ring a bell.”

Still smiling, she turned back to the road.

“I’m Sofia Williams.”

I also felt like telling her that her name doesn’t also ring a bell. But instead, I nodded in silence and stared at my phone screen. It was already 9pm and I was on a strange road, in a strange car, heading to the house of a woman I had never seen before to spend the night.

At that moment her phone rang.

I saw it.

It was an iPhone 13pro max.

Sofia picked the phone to her ears and bursted into a wild laughter.

“Suzana…”

The voice from the other end was a lady’s voice. Even though it wasn’t on a loudspeaker, I could still hear her.

“Babe how far. You just leave me like that. I know say you go find gigolo wey you go take hold body this night.”

Sofia laughed.

She glanced at me and returned her gaze to the road.

“My dear how I wan do. Body no be firewood na.”

“But did you find one?”

“I thought I did o. I picked one guy like that for that usual junction. But it happened he isn’t one of them. Na one chance I just enter so. This night no sweet at all.”

“Jesus! How e happen? Where him dey?”

“Him dey my car now.”

“Your car?”

“Yes. He is spending the night at my place. I couldn’t drop him off.”

Her friend laughed over the phone.

“But how e take happen?”

“Babe I go gist you later. I dey drive.”

“Girl, any way na way o. At least thank God you are not alone tonight. Spoil spoil garri better pass say make you sleep with empty stomach. Take advantage of him. Use your woman power. The Guy go fall no matter the strong head wey him think him get.”

Sofia laughed.

“Girl you bad.”

She ended the call and turned to me.

“Sorry, that was my friend.”

Sophia offered me a chair to sit down on. She took off her heels, turned on the flat screen, and turned back to me.

“Do you care for wine?”

“No, I don’t drink. Thank you.”

“Have you eaten anything?”

“Yes, I did. Before I left my hotel room. I am fine.”

“Are you shy or something?”

“No. I am not shy. I am fine.”

“Please be free okay, Sophia doesn’t bite. I am just being me. I don’t know how to pretend.”

I nodded and glanced at the TV.

She walked into a room and emerged shortly. Then she entered another room, acting like one who was searching for something.

This time she emerged with a knife and two oranges. Sophia walked to the cushion. And sat on the single cushion beside me. She pulled the stool and placed the knife and oranges on it.

“Why a stranger? Why not someone you know?”

“How do you mean?”

“I mean… I think if you intend to go on with this as you’ve planned, the father of your child shouldn’t be a stranger. He should be someone you know. You should know his traits, his behavior, and where he comes from. Some traits are inherited you know.”

“I don’t want any gold digger in form of a man to come claiming my child when he is grown, or when I am dead. I don’t want it. That is why I choose to make use of a stranger. He won’t even know I am pregnant. If my plans had worked out as I wanted, we would have sex tonight and he will leave tomorrow. I want to raise my child alone, Praises. My son will never know his father, and I believe he will eventually learn to leave with it that way.”

“From the way you speak I can tell you want a male child.”

Sophia chuckled.

“Children are a gift from God, Praises. But I prefer a male child. Someone who can take over my wealth and my businesses when I am no more. That is all I want. I will never be complete if I am to leave this world without having a child.”

“So you don’t need a man in your life.”

“Nah! I’ve been through a lot in the hands of men. I have been made to kiss their ass just because they felt I was desperate. So I learned to live without them. I don’t want any man in my life. Why do I even need one? Huh? Tell me. What’s so special about having a man around you?”

I swallowed a gulp of saliva.

“Nothing. Nothing is special.”

Sophia chuckled.

I turned back to the TV set. Darted my eyes around and glanced at her secretly, watching as she peeled the oranges and sucked them.

Sophia kept making moans I couldn’t understand.

She sucked the oranges like a child sucking the breast of her mother. She squeezed the oranges and made sounds initiated with her tongue.

When she was done, she stood up, heaved a sigh, and walked back into the room.

I quickly made the sign of the cross. My heart was pounding really fast and I couldn’t tell why.

Sophia emerged shortly after with a very short white towel wrapped around her chest. Her fair laps were exposed.

I saw her and for a moment, I couldn’t help but notice how sexy she looked. I stared lustfully at her straight legs and breast which appeared bigger than they looked when she was fully dressed in her clothing. Her smile broadened exposing a set of white teeth.

Sophia stood on the spot, staring at me.

“Praises, I want to ask you a question.”

I lifted my eyes.

“What question?”

“I know you already told me you are not who I thought you were. But let’s pretend. Let’s pretend that I hired you tonight and I was going to pay you five million naira cash, just to sleep with me. Would you?”

I shook my head.

“Ten million naira, Praises. A business of your choice. And you will leave this house with any of the cars out there. All you need to do is make love to me.”

I tried to give Sophia an answer. I moved my lips but I couldn’t get any words to come out.

Sophia smiled and walked to me.

She stretched her hands, winked at me, and beckoned.

“Come.”

“Sophy, I didn’t say yes. I didn’t say I was going to give you what you are asking for.”

“You don’t have to say yes to me, Praises. The answer is already written all over your face. I can see it in your eyes. You are only battling with your conscience and I am only trying to help you defeat it.”

Sophia reached out for my hands and pulled me up. She dragged me closer to her chest and sniffed my neck.

“I love your body smell. I could sniff you all night long.”

I tried to move away from her but was pulled back immediately.

“Where are you going to, Praises? Calm down.”

Her breath grazed my skin as she spoke. I shut my eyes tight. Trying to hold myself.

“Sophia, I…”

“I know. You are scared. It always happens this way. Especially as I am older than you, you should feel uncomfortable with me. You have a lot going through your mind now and I understand.”

She heaved a sigh.

“Fine, let’s find a way to make you calm.”

Sophia lifted my right hand and placed it on her waist.

“Sophia,” I whispered almost helplessly.

“Shhh! Praises, now tell me. Do I bite?”

I shook my head.

“Fine let’s just talk. It will help you calm down before we do anything.

She glanced at the yellow flower vase and turned her attention to me.

“So tell me, what will ten million do for you?”

“Nothing,” I whispered, clearing my throat in the process.

Her eyes broadened like that of a bull injected with a needle.

“Nothing? Do you know how many guys out there need this amount of money to become established? Do you have an idea of the number of men who will jump on this opportunity at the slightest chance they have? They will not even wait for me to ask twice. And you think ten million is too small?”

“Sophia, let’s say you didn’t pick me. What if you had picked some other guy from that same spot. Would you have offered him ten million naira to sleep with you?”

“I don’t want a guy to sleep with me, Praises. It seems you are not getting it. I want a man who can impregnate me within this period.”

“If you had gotten a man who will impregnate you, would you have given him ten million?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because none of them are worth it. It is their job. Would have paid them their normal charge which is not more than a hundred thousand for a person of my class.”

“So why offer me five million and eventually raise the amount to ten million? What is so special about me?”

“You are not like them. Yes. You said something a few minutes ago that I thought of the moment I went in to change. I never really thought about the traits my child might inherit from his father. I do not want a child who would live the kind of life his father lived. And I think if I must do this, I should do it with someone responsible. You look responsible to me. A writer and you are perfect for this task. Ten million is a lot of money, Praises. Take it. And on your way out of this house, take any car outside there along with you. Just get me pregnant tonight. I want to carry your child.”

“What if you don’t get Pregnant. What if I decide to do it now, and nothing happens? What then happens?”

“I am not denying you the car and the money. I will give you that immediately after we are done tonight. But you will come back. Every day for 6 days until it is confirmed that I am pregnant.”
