CHAPTER 13

THE NEXT MORNING

AMANDA’S POV

I woke up, a mix of happiness and sadness flooding my thoughts as I reminisced about the past. It had become a daily habit since my problems began. I hoped that things would get better from now on. I stood up from my bed and freshened up. Now, I needed something to keep me busy and fetch some money to avoid being idle and falling into depressîon.

I walked out of my room towards the kitchen to make something to eat, and I heard giggles behind me, prompting me to turn around.

“You really have some guts to show your face. If I were you, I would either run away never to return or take my 0wn life,” a maid named Ogechi said, surprising me as I couldn’t recall having any form of disagreement with her.

“Well, too bad, I am not you. I am Amanda, and I am not a cow@rd like you,” I retorted. Why couldn’t she mind her own business?

“It is obvious you have no shame. You have the mind to marry our beloved king with your tãinted body,” she groaned. I guessed she might have had a small crush on King Ikenna, and her hopes were dashed when he chose me.

“Well, too bad. I remain the king’s wife, and I am not ashãmed of anything because I am innocent,” I said confidently. I wouldn’t let a maid talk me down because of what happened. Never!

“Ha! It is the guts for me. You still don’t understand that your image is forever tärnished in this village,” another maid, Olanma, said with a hiss.

“Well, I don’t need that image to live forever because it has been destroyed. So, my dears, it is time for me to move on and build another image for myself. I am sorry; I won’t be sulking as you have expected,” I said, walking away. I wasn’t going to let those words get to me, and I wouldn’t let them break me.

I reached the kitchen and found the king’s mother, Queen Chiamaka, there, having a conversation with the head of the palace maids. The queen was a caring and jovial person, kind-hearted and always willing to help those in need. This alone made her unique.

“Good morning, my queen,” I greeted. She turned and looked at me, then proceeded to place her cup of tea on the table. I noticed the head maid glaring at me.

“I am not your queen, Amanda, so do not address me like that. If I were your queen, you would have kept your chãstity and not disgr@ced my son,” she snapped. Why was it so hard for them to believe me?

“I am sorry, Your Highness,” I said, according her respect.

“What do you want here, Amanda?” the queen asked as she picked up her cup to take a sip.

“Let me guess, you have come to order the maids to make your breakfast,” she added.

“No, not at all, my queen,” I muttered.

“SILENCE! You sh@melêss thing. You have the effrontery to come here and order these beautiful vîrgîn maids to make food for you. What gave you that guts?” she snapped at me.

“My queen, I have no such intention. I only came to make breakfast for myself, and not the other way around, my queen,” I responded with a courtesy.

“Oh, shut it. I know your type; you are a gōld dīgger. But your plan has failed. You have no right to stand where these vîrgîns stand because you are not one and have no right to order them around,” she said, causing all the maids to smile and giggle.

“You have no right to make use of any utensils in this kitchen. If I don’t know, you are now an outcãst in this palace and village. So keep to yourself. We don’t need you running around the village showing your tâinted self,” she said, smiling. I didn’t let her get to me.

“If my presence irritãtes you and the villagers, ASK YOUR SON TO EXILE ME,” I said, looking her in the eye without feãr, causing everyone to be shocked.

“I never asked for this life. Left to me, I would never have come for the king’s coronation. I already had someone who even pleaded with me to just love him, which was the one in the picture that my dear friend showed you. I never asked for any of this, and it was never about the money; I was doing well on my own, and Michael was well-to-do too. So I very much won’t lack money,” I inhaled and sighed.

“My queen, ask your son to exile me, and I will be eternally grateful to you and will never show my face,” I said with determination. I was not going to allow anyone to bully me.

“I like your resilience even though you are a gōld digger, and I commend you for that. But do yourself a favor and watch how you talk to me. Young lady,” she said, lifting her head with elegance.

“I told you she is spöilt and rüde, imagining defending her dîsloyalty to the crown with this nonsênsê,” the head maid said, and the maids nodded in support.

“My son doesn’t deserve you at all, and I will get him someone who befits his status,” the queen said, smiling.

“As you wish, my queen, and please tell him to let me go since I don’t befit his status. Let me go to someone who befits me and loves me for who I am,” I said and turned to leave.

I got to the door and met King Ikenna staring furiously at me. Oh, crap, I wasn’t expecting to see him here. I didn’t say anything and walked off to my room with all eyes on me.

I got to my room and looked around, thinking of how to make some adjustments and get the things I would be needing from the market. I was still thinking of what to do when the king barged into my room and pinned me to the wall.

“What is the meaning of what you said in the kitchen, Amanda?” he groaned furiously. I guess I hurt his ego. He didn’t give me space to respond before kîssïng me furiously and biting me in the process.

“YOU ARE MINE, AMANDA, ALL MINE, AND NO ONE IS GOING TO COME BETWEEN US AND TAKE YOU AWAY,” he snapped angrily and left me.

He held his head and sat on the bed, trying to calm his emotions that were like a raging sea.

“Why can’t you understand that I love you and would never let you go? Do I have to drill you so hard for you to understand that?” he said as he stood up and walked towards me.

“I love you, and that won’t change,” he added and kîssed my forehead.

“Okay, I have heard you, Alex,” I said, causing him to smile.

“I love it when you call my name, cutie pie. Here, take this and get whatever you want, and avoid going to the kitchen,” he said, bringing out a bundle of cash from his pocket.

“Thank you; this will help a lot,” I said with a smile. Now I wouldn’t have to spend my own money.

“You are welcome, anything for you, my love. Let me know when you are back,” he said and kîssed my forehead again. He walked towards the door before coming back and whispering something in my ear. I smiled.

“No problem!”
