CHAPTER 12

AMANDA’S POV

I couldn’t understand why all this was happening to me. Now, I’ve lost my job, my hopes of returning to the city dashed. I have to stay back and suffer. What caused this? I’ve always been diligent in my job. Which policy did I violate? This must be the work of someone who really h@tes me. Whoever it is, I pity them because they must suffer for putting me through this pain.

Right now, all I want to ask the king is why. Why me? Why this punishment? Just why? I can’t bear to think that my own parents abandoned me without remorse. Well, all I can do is make the most of this period. It’s just for one year, and then I’ll find my way without looking back.

With this resolution in mind, I walked toward the kitchen to find food. I was really hungry but got shocked on my way there – the king and Mirabel were kissing. So, this is the reason she betrayed me, because she wants the king. I couldn’t stand the sight and ran back. I instantly lost my appetite, and fresh tears began to pour. All the pain of hurt, betrayal, and hum!liation compressed my heart. I sat on the floor in my room and wept loudly.

“Amanda! My love, please don’t do this. Stop crying, please,” a voice rang out from behind me. I turned to see it was – and got a shocker – the king.

“Why are you here? What do you want from me? Why are you…” I got cut off with a kiss on my lips. I pushed him away and raised my hands to slap him, but he caught it.

“Oh! Feisty, I like it,” he said as he kissed my hands and pulled me to himself, kissing me again. I struggled with him, but he wouldn’t let go, and that got me so angry that I bit his lips so hard before he let go.

“Amanda, come and sit, please. Let’s talk things out as a couple,” he said as he walked to the bed and sat down.

“I have nothing to discuss with you. I h@te you so much. All you have done is cause me pain, and that’s what you are good at,” I shouted furiously at him, expecting him to stand up and leave me alone. Instead, he stood up and dragged me to sit on his lap.

“Amanda, my love, I know I have offended you, but please let me explain myself,” he said with a soothing voice.

“What do you want to say? Will it make any difference to the pain you have caused me?” I asked him.

“Yes! It won’t make any difference, but hear me out. I love you so much. I don’t want you to go through this hum!liation or be exiled. All I wanted was to punish you in bed. I didn’t care about your purity anymore, though it hurt me a lot not to be your first…”

“You still don’t get it; I never slept with any man except you. Why can’t you believe me?” I asked.

“My love, I believe anything you say, but it’s hard to believe this. But one thing I am sure of is that you’re sweet,” he said with a cheeky grin. I glared at him and stood up, walking to the table to get a glass of water to drink. What exactly is his problem?

“But I don’t understand why your parents didn’t support you, but instead brought your friends to the palace. Couldn’t they tell that your friends were lying? Still, they supported the elders when we were discussing your punishment, while I was pleading for leniency. But they insisted your punishment remains that way,” he said, shocking me.

“You are lying. My parents won’t do that to me. Why would they insist on that punishment for me, their own daughter?” I asked, close to tears. He must be lying to break my spirit, but I will show him that I am strong.

“Amanda, I am serious. Why would I lie about this? It would only make you h@te me when you find out the truth. I knew you would doubt, so I secretly recorded the meeting I had with the elders in the morning. Here, listen,” he said, stretching forth his phone to me. I collected it and listened to the recording. What I heard made fresh tears roll down my eyes. How could my parents support this, and why?

“You see, my love, this was beyond me. I pleaded so many times, but they insisted if I don’t want you exiled, I must comply with the punishment they chose for you,” he sighed. But that didn’t change the fact that I suffered severely for what I didn’t do.

“Look! My love, I am really sorry for all of this, and I knew your friends were lying because they wanted me. But I promise you are the only woman I have eyes for, and I have sent those liars out of this village. You won’t ever see them again. Please let me get you some food, then we can continue our discussion,” he said and walked out to get me food.

He came a few minutes later with some food and fed me himself, though I protested, he wouldn’t stop. It was sweet of him, and I could feel my heartbeat change just because of him. He is my husband, but I can’t forget the pain he caused, and my guard will always be up against him.

He took me to the bathroom, insisting on bathing me himself to wash off, but he had an ulterior motive, and I let him have his way.

When he was done, he carried me out and placed me on the bed and pecked on my forehead.

“Ohh! You are the best, and please, my love, call me Alex when we are alone,” he said, revealing a cheeky smile.

“Ok, I do have some questions to ask you, but that will be another day because I am tired and sleepy,” I muttered tiredly.

“Ok! Sleep well,” he smiled softly before bending and whispering something in my ear, something that shocked me to the core. I nodded, and we smirked at each other.

“OK!!”

IN THE CITY

MIRABEL POV

I woke to see up Ujunwa beside me. I tried to sit up but couldn’t, so I tapped her.

“Ujunwa, Ujunwa…”

“Oh! You are awake. Thank God. Let me get the doctor,” she immediately bolted out the door to get the doctor. A few minutes later, she walked in with the doctor.

“Hello, Mirabel. How are you feeling? Do you remember anything?” the doctor asked while writing down on his notepad. My memories were hazy but became clear. Tears began to roll down my eyes as I remembered the scene before I fainted.

“I guess she wants to be alone for now. Call me when she is stable,” the doctor walked out of the room, leaving me with Ujunwa.

“Babe! What is the problem? Why are you crying?” she asked as she settled beside me.

“Uju! I am finished ooo…”

“What do you mean now? You are getting me scared. Why are you crying?” she asked in a scared tone.

“I caught Emeka with a lady sitting on his lap, playing. Ujunwa, my only hope is gone.”

“Thank God you know it is gone because I can’t stand your sight for a single second,” a voice rang out from the door. We turned to see who it was. Behold, it was Emeka.

“Mirabel, how could you? I gave you everything you wanted and more, but what did you pay me back with, uhh! YOU BETRAYED MY TRUST,” he snapped at me, causing me to shiver.

“I didn’t do anything to you. You are the one that betrayed my trust; you had the guts to bring another woman to the house. What of me? What of my love?” I shouted back, my voice already becoming croaked.

“Your love! Your love!” he burst into serious laughter.

“You think I don’t know what you did. What did you take me for; look dear, I am aware of every move you make,” he said, shocking me and Ujunwa to the core.

“Whaat… doo…youu…mmean,” I stammered.

“I knew everything you did, dear Mirabel, every single thing. How could you hurt your friend all because of what, a man? Your friend’s man when you have a strong man by your side. I loved you and wanted to get married to you by the end of the year, but you let greed deceive you. For your information, I am also one of King Ikenna’s friends, but I refused to return now, and they know of you. So when you made your display in the palace, they informed me, and also, I cloned your WhatsApp to find out more.” He laughed with tears in his eyes.

“I know you did h@ok up when I wasn’t around, but my question is, what exactly do you want? I gave you everything, but I guess it wasn’t enough. So, it’s time to let go. I don’t want to get hurt anymore. This is a goodbye, Mirabel!” he said, looking at her intently.

“Emeka, I am sorry. It won’t happen again, I promise,” I cried. It is now I realized I couldn’t bear to lose him.

“I am sorry, Mirabel, but I can’t be with someone that has the heart to hurt her friend. The friend that was always there for you. I am sorry, but I can’t. I have moved on with my life with this beautiful lady here. You too, do the same. GOODBYE!!” he took the lady’s hand and walked out, leaving me to my regrets.

Ujunwa went after him to plead, but the next thing I heard was her screaming and a loud thud on the ground, then everything went silent!!.
