A PLACE OF TERROR Final Episode 8 – Blessing-Enejo Abrahams Elleywrites

The cola nut seller noticed how trem bled the whole of my body was and couldn’t take her eyes off me.

“Oga corper, you dey fine so?” she questioned still staring at me.

I nodded.

“Yes… Yes ma, I… I’m fine” I said stuttering and then hurried out of her sight.

I hurried to the other side of the market, looked around then entered one of the abandoned shops. I took off my clothes and was stark n@ked within a few seconds. I broke some of the cola nuts and the bitter cola into pieces and started to put them in my mouth one after the other.

I came out of the shop and started to walk around. The first people who saw me were all left in awe and were all standing still staring at me.

I walked back straight into the market and everyone discontinued what they were doing and had their gazes fixed on me but I ignored them and continued my task.

“How come? Who let out the secret?” A man sitting before a wheelbarrow full of onion asked rhetorically.

I walked from there into the main town, some of the people there already heard about what I was doing. As soon as the vigilante men on standby saw me from afar, they approached me.

“Stop there! What do you think you’re doing ?” one of them questioned staring at me.

I picked another few pieces of the nuts from my palm and threw them into my mouth and started to chew on them with all my strength.

“Who told you what you’re doing? ” Another vigilante questioned but I ignored them and started to walk out on them.

“Stop there or I’ll blow off your head” another thre@tened raising his guπ but I didn’t let that move me. I needed to do what I had to do to leave that place so even if I d!e while at it at least I attempted.

Then I heard a guπshot all of a sudden and at the same time, I felt something in my left palm. I opened it and saw a bul!et lying in my palm.

“Shoot him again!” Another yelled and I heard another guπshot.

I felt my fingers wrapped around something and when I opened my palm again there another bullet was. They all startled, turning and looking into each other’s eyes.

“How come?” one of them asked rhetorically.

“Who let out the secret of Ekpo?” he questioned keeping a straight face.

I hurried out of there while my heart kept on pounding so hard and was also looking back to see if they were after me but they weren’t. I walked around the village for hours and when it was getting dark I returned to the cemetery. I summoned Eniola and she stood by me again till the following morning.

By Blessing-Enejo Abrahams Elleywrites

I left and then continued my task again. I kept putting the pieces of nuts into my mouth on my way around the village. I became so famished at a point but I was determined to get what I wanted. Then, one of the elders of the village confronted me.

“How dare you? Who let out the secret of Ekpo to a total stranger? ” He said looking around.

He raised his hand and then pointed his index finger at me.

“You can try all you can, but it’s an abomination for you to leave this place alive for this you have done. And, we shall surely fish out whoever let the secret out ” he said turning his back and then left but I made sure I never uttered even a word.

I continued like that against all odds till on the 6th day. I was already so famished and exhausted. I staggered around the village with the little strength I had gathered the previous night. The villagers were already so tired of me after trying whatever they could to stop me all to no avail.

I almost gave up on several occasions chewing just bitter cola and cola nuts. When I remember my parents and siblings I would jerk back to life again.

“No, I must not. Mom needs me” I would whisper to myself.

On the morning of the 7th day, Eniola looked at me and then smiled.

“Congratulations. But, do not be overjoyed just yet. We may or may not see again after today but if you make it out of here alive, just like your name Victor, give your children names that will not only work positively for them but give them names with a positive impact. Your name has paved the way for you. Being your last day, they might devise another means to stop you from being liberated. Do not forget the bitter cola and the cola nuts. Chew them.” She said.

I was already in shivers and had emaciated due to lack of food.

I nodded.

“I just… I just pray that… that I can finish this task” I managed to say.

“I pray so too,” she said.

I staggered out of the cemetery and went into the village again and this time, the villagers came prepared.

As soon as I finished going around the village for the day, I was waiting for a miracle to be able to get out of Ekpo somehow but nothing was forthcoming. I stood in the centre of the village eager to go home so I was wondering if I did the task right. Then, I saw some elders of the village with a man that looked like a native doctor walking toward me.

“This is it, the end. Lord please, if I’m unable to make it out of here alive, give my family the fortitude to bear the loss” I whispered to myself.

By Blessing-Enejo Abrahams Elleywrites

The native doctor drew near, stretched forth his hand with an egg in his palm, and started to make some incantations. I was clueless and confused at the same time about what next to do cos I knew nothing about the act. He then raised the egg and was almost slamming it on the ground when Eniola appeared and caught it. As soon as she did, a path opened so wide with a little child standing by it ushering me in, I never knew if she was a boy or a girl.

I looked at the little child and the path and I became more confused.

“Hurry, go!” Eniola screamed.

I dived into the pathway immediately after I heard that and began to run down it. I turned and looked back to see Ekpo town ablaze. It was burn!ng so seriously with a cloud of very thick smoke.

I followed the path for a few minutes till I landed on the express. As soon as I saw it, my legs became weaker. I staggered to at least go stand by it and wait for a vehicle, I had forgotten that I was still stark n@ked but I passed out and was resuscitated with sprinkles of water on my face by passersby.

“I think the m@dness just started.” one whispered to the other.

I managed to look up.

“I am not mad, I’m only a victim of circumstance”

Well, I was given a shirt and an oversized pair of trousers to wear. Had to hold the waist with a hand to prevent it from falling from my waist, and was also given some money.

I boarded a vehicle and after some hours, I arrived home. I threw our gate open and immediately my family saw me, they abandoned all they were doing and ran to me cos they hadn’t heard from me for months. I fell on my knees and started singing songs of praise to God.

Well, I’m planning to go find Osa’s mom in Benin City this weekend to fulfill my promise.
