Engaged To The De@d.
Episode 4.
… “What?!” I exclaimed, and started checking my already emptied handbag.
“What is it?” Mom questioned, and I immediately dropped the phone from my ear.
“It’s… Jerry’s sister” I said calmly.
“Ehen? What did she say?” Mom quizzed but I stood there with my phone in my palm and my gaze fixed.
“I don’t understand. She said they found the engagement ring on Jerry’s pillow” I said looking at Mom.
“Whose engagement ring? Call her back and tell her it’s not yours now” She said.
“Mom, it could be mine” I said, already dropping a tear.
“How do you mean?” Mom who was sitting on the bed questioned standing up.
“Mom, I have been looking for the ring I kept in my handbag but I can’t find it.”
“You must have left it in the house then” She said but I shook my head.
“I didn’t leave it. I put it inside this bag and I’m very sure I did” I said still sobbing.
“Bring the bag” Mom said and I hurried to her and handed her the bag. She checked it too but found nothing.
“So, do we go back there to check if the ring is truly yours? I hope those people are not up to something? ” She added.
“We must go check it out. Have you forgotten what the Pastor said?”
“That’s true. You know what? Let’s just dress up and get out of here” She said.
After a few minutes, we were done dressing up. We left the hotel and we soon arrived at Jerry’s family house. As soon as we sat in the living room, his sister rushed out with an engagement ring in her palm.
“Look what we found, isn’t this yours?” She questioned walking up to me. It was a very big living room. I couldn’t wait for her to walk up to me so I stood and hurried to her.
“Yes, it is” I said as soon as I set my eyes on it.
“What?!” Mom exclaimed.
“How come? Are you sure you didn’t forget it here yesterday?”
“I didn’t, it’s been in my bag. Why is Jerry doing this to me? This is getting too much to bear. Jerry, why are you t0rmenting someone you claimed to love so much this way? Was it because I promised you forever? You need to understand that we are both worlds apart now and what you’re asking for cannot be done. You and I can’t get married now that you are no more. Don’t you get it?” I said while tears made its way down my cheeks. Jerry’s sister immediately reached out and gave me a very tight hug.
I then walked up to Mom and stood before her. She stood up, and hugged me too.
“Come on, if there’s nothing that can be done I’ll suggest we go back to the Pastor” She said and I nodded sporadically.

We both got up, walked out of the house, and then out of the gate. I was crying profusely while Mom held my right hand as we walked side by side to the junction. And then, a little boy of about 10 years old passed us by and greeted us, and all of a sudden we heard “Good morning sir” Just right after us. No one was before or after us, Mom and I were the only ones on the road except for the little boy who just passed by. Mom and I both looked back swiftly but found no one except the little boy who was already on his way to his destination throwing little stones around.
“Young boy” Mom called and the boy immediately looked back.
“Come” Mom added and the little boy rushed back to us.
“My dear, I heard you greet someone when you passed us” She questioned with a smile.
“Yes. I greeted you, this aunty, ” He said pointing at me.
“And this uncle behind this Aunty” She said and our jaws immediately dropped.
I scanned everywhere with my eyes within a few seconds but found no other person.
“Which uncle? Where is he?” I questioned looking around again.
“The one standing behind you” He said pointing in the air.
“Behind who?” I quizzed with popped eyes, and I immediately rushed to Mom grabbing back her hand and holding it in a very tight grip.
“Over there. The one in white” He said again pointing towards the same direction.
Mom understood what was going on already. She opened her bag, brought out a five hundred Naira note, and handed it over to the boy.
“Take this, thank you for the information” Mom said to him with a smile, stretching forth the money. The little boy grabbed it and smiled back.
“Thank you. If I waste any more time Mom will deal with me” He said and took to his heels.
I was standing there shivering, with my heart pounding so fast. I grabbed Mom’s hand to my chest not letting go. Mom then smiled looking into the air.
“Jerry, I can see you’re very stubborn” Mom said.
“Let’s go to the Pastor immediately” Mom added grabbing my hand as we both walked out of there. I kept turning and looking back but found nothing.
We later arrived at the park, and we boarded a vehicle headed to our destination. A few minutes after we sat, a middle-aged man sitting in the front seat turned and looked at us, and then shook his head. Mom noticed, and immediately opened her mouth.
“Sir, please don’t be offended. Why did you look at us and then shook your head?” Mom asked looking at the man. He turned again…
“Madam, I pray you don’t bury your daughter in seven days. That’s a coffin she’s carrying on her head” He added…
