Engaged To The De@d.

Episode 3

… Jerry’s Mom paused and then let out a heavy sigh.

“You see my daughter, Jerry’s ghost has been appearing to almost every family member, telling them that you both must get married before he’ll leave you alone and we must not allow you to drop the ring on his grave”

“Holy ghost fire! I cast and bind him in Jesus name” Mom exclaimed.

“No, Jerry can’t say that” I said shaking my head and sobbing at the same time.

“Hmmm… He said you made a promise to him, telling him that even de@th can never separate you two” His Mom said.

As soon as Mom heard that, she turned staring at me.

“Is that true?” She quizzed still sitting and with a hand on her waist.

“Ermmm… but… but…” I said stuttering.

“But what?” Mom yelled.

“I said so to him when he was still alive, not to his de@d b0dy”

Mom immediately put both hands on her head.

“You have k!lled me. How could you have made such a promise? You children of nowadays, there’s nothing you people won’t promise each other all in the name of love. You’ll keep your senses aside and allow your mouth do the thinking” She said in @nger.

“I wonder” Said Jerry’s Mom.

“See yourself?” Mom said again, and then turned to Jerry’s Mom.

“Madam please, is there any other solution to this?”

As soon as Jerry’s Mom heard that, she sighed.

“I’m afraid not, it’s what Jerry wants before he can leave her alone. I wish there was something I could do to help, I would have gladly done so. But they brought this upon themselves with the words of their mouth” She said.

“It’s what Jerry wants? Marrying my daughter even now that he’s de@d? That’s so c@lous of him” Mom fumed.

“Please, do not speak of the de@d like that” She said but that only pr0voked Mom the more. She stood up all of a sudden and one of the wrappers she was tying at the top of the other fell helplessly on the floor but she ignored and didn’t bother to pick it up. I was the one who picked it.

“You people are very w!cked. If she was your daughter would you have advised her to marry someone who is de@d and gone? Is there another solution to this or not? If there’s none let me take my daughter to where she will be liberated” Mom fumed again.

“Madam, please calm down. It’s not my fault is it?” Said Jerry’s Mom in a rather calm tone but Mom wasn’t ready for all that.

“I know it’s not your fault. But would you have advised your daughter to do same?” She quizzed and then turned to me.

“Please get up let us leave here.” Mom said already walking out.

I stood up to leave but Jerry’s Mom grabbed my hand.

“My dear, I would advise you to do what he wants so his spirit can rest. If you don’t do it he’ll keep disturbing you and appearing to everyone else. After doing it, then you’re free” She said in whispers but I immediately withdrew my hand.

“God forbid!” I exclaimed snapping my fingers around my head.

“Ajifa!!!” Mom who was already at the gate screamed my name and I ran after her without any more word to Jerry’s Mom. Mom kept murmuring to herself as she walked outside the gate.

The junction wasn’t too far from there. Mom and I stood by the road waiting for any available taxi to take to the park but none was forthcoming. It was already almost 6pm, and Mom was ready to travel back to our base, a journey of three hours that night. We waited and waited, even for a bike but none agreed to go to the park. We were there till past seven, and I suggested to Mom to allow us lodge in a hotel nearby till the following morning, thank goodness she agreed.

We arrived at the hotel, lodged, freshened up and Mom decided to order for food. She picked up the telephone on a stool beside the bed and tried calling the kitchen with one of the hotel numbers on a card beside the telephone but none was going through and she decided to go downstairs herself to order. She asked me if I wanted to go with her but I told her that I was too tired to, and that I needed to rest.

“Ok, try and rest then, I’ll be back shortly” She said slamming the door behind her.

I laid on the bed, turned on the TV and was watching one very interesting program when the TV went off all of a sudden, and then the lights. Everywhere became so dark. I had plugged my phone as soon as we arrived the room but I walked in the dark with my hands guiding me to the direction where I plugged it and searched for it with my hands but couldn’t find it. I then walked carefully towards the door with my hands on the wall but the wall seemed to have no end as the door too could not be found. I started to shiver, with my heart almost popping out of my chest.

“Mommy!” I called but heard no response. And then, even though it was dark I noticed something behind me. I turned swiftly and lo and behold, I saw Jerry’s face in the dark. As soon as I screamed, Mom entered and the light was restored immediately. She grabbed me, and started asking me questions which I couldn’t even answer, I kept staring and pointing toward the direction but I couldn’t utter a word.

“Talk to me Ajifa, what did you see?” She questioned and then I turned, locking stares with her.

“Jerry! ” I exclaimed and Mom immediately rushed to her bag and brought out her Bible and began to pray. She prayed so much that none of us even had the chance and mind to eat the food she ordered. After she was done, we both lay on the bed but I couldn’t even close my eyes till dawn.

The next morning, we freshened up and something told me to check the ring kept in my bag. I checked, and searched but could no longer find it. I was still there wondering how come without a word to Mom when my phone suddenly rang, it was Jerry’s sister.

“Hello, Ajifa” She said as soon as I picked.

“Hello dear, good day” I replied.

“Your engagement ring, did you leave it in Jerry’s room? We found it on his pillow…
