CASSANDRA
CHAPTER 7
Cassandra woke up very early in the morning. She checked her time and it said 4:25am. She was lost in her thoughts and couldn't sleep anymore. She picked up a piece of paper and began to write things down in tears. When she was done, she placed the piece of paper neatly on top of her bed with the pen she used in writing. She wanted to call Jaxon on phone but didn't want to wake Ernest up.
So she picked up her bag and folded few of her clothes inside. She walked to Ernest's room, she opened the door and saw he was sleeping soundly. Tears rolled down her cheeks slowly, she wiped them and closed the door slowly in order not to wake Ernest. She carried her little bag and left the house.
Cassandra stopped a cab and entered going to Jaxon's house. Jaxon had taken her to his house a certain day after work. He told her he can't be dating her and she won't know where he lives. But on that day, Cassandra didn't spend time there because of Ernest. She told Jaxon she has to go back to cook for Ernest.
On Cassandra's way while still inside the cab, she saw young girls buying fruits they were going to sell very early that morning. That reminded Cassandra where she had come from before Ernest picked her and brushed her up. She remembered how her classmates mocked her saying she won't go to the university. But she's a graduate all thanks to Ernest. She remembered all the menial jobs she was doing back then just to help her mother provide food for the family. The more she remembered what Ernest had done for her and what she had just paid him back with, tears rolled down her cheeks uncontrollably.
I hope all is well? The cab man asked Cassandra seeing she has been sobbing ever since she entered into the car.
Can I ask you a question sir, Cassandra asked wiping her tears. Yeah go ahead the man said…
If someone stops you from driving around in this cab and gives you an office work which pays you in hundreds of thousands. Will you do anything he ask of you?
The cab man smiled and said... My dear, this cab isn’t mine. I’m very loyal to the one who gave me this to help me feed my family. If someone gives me an office job that pays me huge sums of money. After God in my life, he’ll be next. The only thing I can’t give the person is blood, but I’ll be willing to do anything to show gratitude.
Cassandra looked at the cab man, she couldn't help but cry the more. She knows the cab man was right, but she couldn't break her promise to Jaxon either. They got to where Cassandra was supposed to stop, she paid the man and came down. She walked into where Jaxon was staying with her little bag. Then she knocked on his door.
Who is it? A female voice asked from inside.
Cassandra decided not to conclude yet till she knows who was talking. Maybe Jaxon’s sister came visiting she thought.
A young beautiful lady opened the door, she was putting on Jaxon's polo and a bum short.
And who are you and how may I help you she asked Cassandra as soon as she opened the door.
Please who are you ? Cassandra asked politely looking at the lady. Babe….
Who is that Jaxon asked walking towards the door.
When George got home, he was disturbed and couldn't sleep. He felt pity for for his friend Ernest. He had warned him all along but he never heeded to his warnings.
George's wife Tracy saw how her husband was looking worried ever since he came back. She asked him what the problem was, George narrated everything to Tracy. Tracy also felt pity for Ernest even though she blamed him.
George knew his friend so well. Ernest is a very nice guy who is too emotional. He knew Ernest wasn't like him who was emotionally strong. So he decided he was going to call Ernest the next morning to know how he was coping.
The next morning, George called Ernest on phone but he didn't pick. He called again and again yet Ernest didn't pick. George could tell something was wrong. Ernest is someone who always has his phone where ever he was and was very rare for him to miss a call. Something told George everything was not okay with Ernest.
George quickly left for Ernest's house that early morning without even taking his bath. He wanted to take his car but thought it wise to go with a bike since he had not taken his bath. When George arrived at Ernest's house, he pushed the gate and it was open as he suspected. He hastened his pace and went into the house. The door was also open, he quickly went into Ernest's room and saw his friend struggling for his last breath. He quickly held Ernest on his legs stopping him from strangling himself.
He begged Ernest to remove the rope from his neck. Ernest refused crying profusely and begging George to allow him to die because he can't take the pains anymore.
You can't do this to yourself Ernest...What will you tell your parents?
How can you kill yourself because of a girl you picked from the gutters?
Man up man…
Who will joke with me?
Who will call me George of the jungle?
Who will you leave all your sweat for?
Please remember your parents who are expecting so much from you and come down please. George said already in tears.
Ernest sobbed painfully and removed the rope from his neck. George brought him down and hugged him tightly. We will forget her together bro , we will bro George said to Ernest as they both cried together.
