The Dancing Mermaid Final Episode 14 – Blessing-Enejo Abrahams Elleywrites
,.. I swam hurriedly into the river and then swam home. I went into my room and then dropped those gifts on the table and I sat quietly on a chair beside it to ponder on what had just happened.
After like an hour Siraf came into my room and I showed him those gifts I was given at the occasion smiling from ear to ear but he looked at me keeping a straight face.
“You mean to tell me that you went back to that place? That same place?” he questioned.
“Yes of course. I will still go back there cos I have an unfinished business over there remember? I need to teach some people a lesson and, I need to reclaim what was once mine from someone I once called my best friend. I will never allow her shine with a gift she knows nothing about how it was given to me.
“The wa!st bead?” he questioned.
I paused for a second.
“Wait, have I once told you about it?” I queried.
“I’m a merman, remember? About the wa!st bead, you’re now a mermaid so why don’t you just use your powers in claiming back what’s yours?” he said folding his arms.
“No, I don’t want it to happen that way. I want to look Ruka in the eye and ask her why she did what she did.” I said.
“Hmmm… Very well then” he let out.
“Well, I’ll be leaving to my chamber now” he said and then turned.
“But, you haven’t even taken proper look at these gifts I brought. I thought that you were going to be proud of me when you see them “
“My dear of course I am proud of you and will always be. ” he said with smiles and then I nodded.
“I’ll see you later” he said and left my room.
I picked up the silver colored gift and tried to open it forcefully but all attempts failed. I got up and picked the mirror the queen mermaid had given me so I could check on mama but the condition at which I saw her brought tears into my eyes and my heart also started to beat faster. I saw her lying down on a mat under a tree while Iko my little cousin was sitted beside her and crying her eyes out.
“Oh, my!!!” I exclaimed and then I swam hurriedly to the shore where I changed form and I ran straight home. I totally forgot that Iko had seen me turn into a mermaid.
As soon as I arrived the compound and locked stares with Iko, that was when I remembered that she saw me when I actually changed form. Mama got up to our surprise and then sat on the mat. Iko paused while staring and pointing at me at the same time, then stood on her feet.
“You, the mermaid!” she exclaimed and attempted to run away when Mama quickly grabbed her leg and held it tightly in her arms.
“No! No!! She’s a mermaid!!!” she kept on screaming at the top of her voice when Mama suddenly got up and covered her mouth.
“Stop it! Keep quiet!! She’s harmless!!!” mama said directly into her ear and then she calmed down but fe@r was written all over her face and then she began to shiver while holding Mama’s hand in a very tight grip.
I became so uncomfortable and made up my mind to leave.
“I should be on my way” I said.
“No, not yet. Come sit” she said pointing at a stool before her.
I proceeded to sit and as soon as I did Iko hurriedly stood behind Mama.
“It’s ok Iko, please excuse us” Mama said.
“What! You and her?” she queried to be sure of what she had just heard.
“Yes, just me and her. Like I said before she’s harmless and can’t even hurt a fly” Mama assured.
Iko left for Mama’s room and kept on looking back till she entered her room.
“She now stays with you? ” I questioned.
“Yes! Since my own daughter chose other creatures above me I had to go beg her to come stay with me. I have been very s!ck for days now unable to either stand on my feet or put something into my mouth . ” she said looking into my eyes but I immediately bowed my head.
“You know, after the occasion she returned home to tell me all that transpired and how she sneaked after a beautiful maiden and then saw her changed form into a mermaid right before her very eyes and I immediately knew it was you. You never even bothered to come check on your own mother when you came into the village” Mama said smiling.
“I’m so disappointed Ojali! Well, you know what’s best for you. At least if I d!e now I would d!e a once happy but now s@d and ch!ldless woman” she said wiping her tears with the helm of her wrapper.
I went on my knees immediately.
“Mama please, don’t say that. You of all people should understand me better. It is too late to leave them now and, where do you want me to stay if I leave cos they might take back this look and return me back to my old self”
Mama grabbed my hands.
“We can leave here and relocate to my own village together Ojali” she said looking into my eyes but I immediately looked away.
“What about the pregnancy Mama?”
“You cannot carry it. Tell them to take it back, I’m sure they know how to ” she said.
“No please, I can’t do that “
Then all of a sudden two guards walked in on us while Iko followed slowly from behind.
“What’s going on?” I soliloquized and then turned to look at Mama who sat there with her mouth agape.
“Good day everyone. Iko here came to report to us that a certain mermaid is here in your house and the King asked us to bring her to the palace.
“What?! Iko you did this?!!” Mama questioned looking at her.
“Mama I am sorry” she said scratching her head.
“Keep quiet!” Mama yelled and then got up all of a sudden.
“No, she’s not a mermaid and you are not going anywhere with her” she added.
I stoop up.
“Mama please, allow them do their job. Let me go with them to the palace, nothing is going to happen to me ” I said.
“I am coming with you people. Iko, you did this?” Mama questioned again.
We were on our way to the palace when we saw Ruka. She paused as soon as she saw us and then whispered to Iko.
“What’s going on ?”
Iko stopped before her and then whispered back “She’s a mermaid”. Her jaw dropped immediately.
I just turned and looked at her letting out a smile.
Mama took off one of her shoes @ngrily and threw it at her but she dodged it.
“I never knew you had such a loosed mouth” Mama lashed.
We proceeded again to the palace, the King was seated with the elders.
We exchanged pleasantries and then the King looked at me.
“Beautiful maiden, please do not be offended that we summoned you in such manner. Information reached us that you are a mermaid. We don’t know how true it is but we would like you to prove to us that you’re not and if you are, let us know so that we can celebrate you cos we know that mermaids are carriers of good luck, fortune, and gold and silver are all within your reach. Tell us so we will know how to wish and what to wish for which I know that you will fulfill our wishes, surely. Am I speaking your minds?” he said turning to the elders.
“Of course, yes!” they all chorused.
I looked at their faces one after the other and then I let out a smile.
“Yes I’m a mermaid. But before I say anything, please call Ruka and Dogo for me” I said.
“Ruka the dancer? ” the king questioned and I nodded.
“Guards, hurry up and call Ruka and Dogo her husband”
After some minutes they both arrived and then I turned to them.
“Dogo, enough of all your atrocities in this land. You have k!lled too many people including my uncle Ocholi.”
As soon as I mentioned that the elders screamed in chorus and then I took few steps towards Ruka and began walking round her in circles.
“And Ruka, you betrayed your own best friend Ojali who trusted you with her life. She told you a mermaid gave her a wa!st bead she danced with during the dance festival and what did you do? You reported to the king that she used magic powers and then you took the bead from her. Failure to replicate the dance she was later banished and then you go about like a saint like nothing is wrong? Isn’t that the bead still on your wa!st?” I questioned.
“What?! Is that correct Ruka?! ” The king r@ged.
Ruka then nodded.
“Y… Yes your highness” she managed to say and everybody around screamed in chorus again.
And then the prince walked in still wearing his white robe but this time without a can of water. He was immediately ushered to sit and then the king turned to me.
“Please, I understand that you’re a mermaid but was it Ojali herself that told you all these?” he asked.
“Your Highness, please allow me say something ” Mama said with her finger in the air.
“Go on” the king ordered.
“Please, I know that the prince is a spiritualist. Tell him to help me pray for her, I need her back” she said.
I turned to Mama swiftly as soon as I heard that and my jaw dropped in awe.
“Mama!” I exclaimed.
“I don’t understand you woman” the King said.
“Your Highness, that is Ojali standing right before you. When she was banished she had no shelter and then she went to the river for shelter. The queen mermaid took her and then transformed her into another human so no one would recognise her even if she comes around to visit me”
“What?!” The king exclaimed and everybody present started talking in whispers.
“Is that true young lady?” one of the elders questioned and then the prince stood up and walk towards me attempting to lay a hand on my head.
“Don’t you dare” I thundered with eyes as shiny as light and then I took to my heels.
I rushed to the river, changed form and then swam home hurriedly. I reached and I went straight into my room to think about everything I had just witnessed.
“Mama!” I exclaimed.
I picked up those gifts the prince gave to me and I tried severally to force open the silver colored thing and finally it did but lo and behold it was a mirror, and then I saw my face all of a sudden in it. I immediately flung the mirror aside cos I had been warned never to use the human mirror.
“oh my!” I exclaimed and my heart started to beat faster.
I heard a very loud sound of thunder and then the walls of my room split open. I started to tremble in fear and calling on Siraf at the same time, and then the Queen mermaid together with some mermaids came into my room with real smoke coming out of their eyes. I went on my knees immediately.
“Please have mercy on me, please forgive me” was all that came out of my mouth.
“How dare you betray us? After all I’ve done for you this is how you pay me back?” she r@ged.
“I shall turn you into a statue so that It will serve as a lesson to every mermaid around here never to help humans.” she added and then raised her hand.
Siraf dashed in all of a sudden.
“No mother, please tamper justice with mercy. She is carrying my child remember? Please let her go back to her world and then bring back my child somehow after he or she is born. ” he said.
He took few steps forward towards me.
“I thought I could trust you Ojali but you betrayed me, you betrayed us. Bring my child back and then go and never return. Failure to bring my child back, I shall destroy you people and the entire village”
” Siraf!” I called.
The queen mermaid raised her hand and then pointed it towards me and I transformed back into my old self.”
“Leave here, now” she thundered.
I left and then went back home. As soon as Mama and Baba saw me they were both startled and Mama hurried to me and then held me in a tight embrace and busted into tears while Baba came and started to plead for forgiveness.
After few weeks I got to find out that the prince wasn’t actually a spiritualist, he was a priest of the Roman Catholic Church. He started preaching the gospel around the village and then a church was built but with very few members.
Ruka was banished and Dogo was beheaded and his body was dumped somewhere in the ev!l forest. And the wa!st bead? The King took it from Ruka and later gave it to me but I never used it again, I kept it safe instead.
Months later I gave birth to the most beautiful baby boy I have ever seen in my life. The very day I gave birth to him I wrapped him in a wrapper and then took him to the river alongside the waist bead the king had seized from Ruka. I picked up six stones and threw them into the river and then the mermaids appeared.
“Behold, my most precious gift is born” the Queen mermaid said as soon as he saw him and then collected him from me.
“This is the wa!st bead you once gave me. Please take it, thank you for all the things you did for me in the past” I said with my and stretched forth.
The queen collected it from me.
“I actually miss you so much Ojali. But, there’s nothing I can do and I forgive you” she said.
“Thank you ” I managed to stay while tears dropped down my cheeks.
“Please, wish for anything and it shall be done” she said.
“To see Siraf again” I said in between sobs.
” Wish for another, that’s is so impossible cos he doesn’t want to see you”
I nodded.
“I understand. I wish for everything good then” I said.
“So be it” she answered. She turned and then left with my child.
I started attending the prince’s church and I became born again. And now, almost everyone in the village is now a member of the church and whatever I find myself doing always prosper.
The end.
