…” But after the guπshot I heard, I found myself in another realm, another world. And to top it all I was in water but I was breathing fine and standing upright alone in a room without support or pinning my nose.
I started to shiver, I was so sc@red. I looked round again and the only thing I could see was myself in an empty room filled with water and a door by the left.
“Where am I? ” I said as my eyes ran through the room.
And then I gazed into the water with a finger on my cheek.
“The guards, came after me while I was by the river, and then…” my jaw dropped as soon as I remembered I had heard a guπshot.
“Oh my, I’m de@d? ” I exclaimed running my eyes through the room over again as I broke down in tears.
“Mama! How would mama take the news of my de@th if they go back to tell her I had been sh0t and k!lled?” I muttered to myself as I continued sobbing but no single tears dropped.
I raised my left leg to see if I would be able to walk without support and if I would slip and fall but no, it felt as though I was on the earth. And then I lifted my right leg staring into the water at the same time and slowly, I walked towards the door. I slowly stretched forth my arm and then held the door handle and had it twisted, the door came open. I froze as soon as it did taking a step backward, and then I asked myself again,
“Where am i?”.
I moved towards the door again and I peeped through the small opening.
“Come, beautiful maiden” I heard all of a sudden, a voice which got me startled and then I withdrew my face immediately.
“Don’t be afraid, come. Come to me” I heard again.
“Could this be the voice of the gods?” I soliloquized as I remembered I had summoned the mermaids.
“The mermaid world!!” I exclaimed with a palm over my lips as my eyes popped open.
I peeped through the space again to see whose voice it was and then I saw the mermaid lady sitted on a golden chair in another room.
“You?! How did I get here?” I queried curiously.
“Well, you were going to be sh0t but it was a near miss. I carried you as soon as the sixth stone landed in the river and then we disappeared together and, voila! Here you are “
“You saved me” I said and she nodded beaming with smiles.
“Thank you, I’m grateful ” I said.
“You’re welcome. Feel at home, welcome to the mermaid world ” she said smiling from ear to ear and then I nodded.
She got up, that was the first time I saw her closely. From her wa!st down looked like the tail of a fish but it had very beautiful designs and as shiny as light. Her skin too was so fresh and silky and the length of her shiny hair almost touched the back of her legs.
“You’re so beautiful” I let out.
“Thank you ” she said smiling revealing a well arranged dentition.
“Come with me” she said as she proceeded to open the door.
We stepped out together as soon as she did and behold the most beautiful sight I had ever seen in my life. All the buildings were in gold with doors as shiny as diamond. My jaw immediately dropped in awe and I didn’t even know when I let out the word “wow!”.
Mermaids both old and young with different colors of regalia trooped out as they bowed their heads before her. I had never heard about male mermaids before, I saw them with my very eyes.
“You seem to be their queen?” I asked her in whispers.
“You’re right” she answered.
She introduced me to them and I was given a warm welcome. She then took me into a very big auditorium designed with different colors of balloons and pearls with gold tables and chairs.
“Wow!!!” I exclaimed looking around in admiration.
“Sit” she ushered.
“What would you like to eat? Do you have a favorite?” she queried.
I was still busy admiring the whole place with my mouth agape.
“Hello? ” I heard all of a sudden.
“Ermmm…sorry. This place is just too beautiful” I said.
“You can say that again. I was asking you if you have any favorite food”
“Oh, food! No I don’t. I eat any meal that’s tasty” I said grinning.
“Ok” she said and then she ran her hand in circles three times before me and different varieties of food appeared immediately.
“Eat” she said pointing at them.
My eyes immediately popped open. I sighted a plate of bush meat. I got up and picked it up and then started to devour it while the plate was still sitting in my palm without sitting down.
I was later taken to a room, my room like she called it. It was too beautiful. I was going to sit on the bare floor with my gaze fixed to the glass roof when she pointed at a gold colored chair and asked me to sit on it.
The following day very early she called me into her room and I was asked to sit.
“Welcome. How are you enjoying your stay here?” she questioned staring at me.
“Very well, I love it so much here” I said with smiles.
” Would you like to become one of us?”
“I would love to but…” I said and she cut in.
“Your mother?”
I nodded sporadically.
“Your mother has been fine without you and very soon she will get used to your absence. You want to go back into that cruel world? A world of h@te and jealousy? They chased you out to d1e remember? If you go back now where would you stay?”
“Why don’t you stay here where almost everything is possible?” I heard from behind all of a sudden, I turned swiftly to see a very handsome, tall and fair young man”
“That’s my son, he’s name is Saraf” she said pointing at him.
“You have a son as grown as him?” I queried in disbelief.
She smiled. ” oh yes. As a matter of fact I’m one hundred and twenty years old. We do not age here in our world” she said.
“wow” I let out.
The young man then approached with a hand stretched forth for a handshake.
“So, would you like to become one of us?” he queried and I nodded, smiling.
Two days later I was initiated and I became a mermaid with a pinkish tail, and was told that I would be there permanently for three months, after then I would decide if I either want to continue staying or go back to my world. I had everything at my beck and call, respect, food and of course love.
Siraf and I started dating and I must confess, he was the nicest and most wonderful man I had ever met.
“Promise me you will never return to your home” he asked one day on a cool evening.
“I promise” I said looking into his eyes.
Four days later I was asleep when I suddenly jerked up.
“Mama” I exclaimed.
I hurried out of bed and then I dashed into the Queen mermaid’s room.
“Are you ok?” she questioned as soon as she saw me.
“My mother” I said again while tears welled up in my eyes.
“Please, I’ll like to see my mother. Is it possible?” I questioned.
She sighed.
“I’m not returning home. I would just like to see her” I repeated.
“Come back tomorrow morning ” she said.
I went back to her the following morning and then she gave me a mirror. I was told that each time I wanted to see anything or anyone I should just call their names and the mirror would show me wherever they are and whatever they are doing.
I hurried into my room and then held the mirror before me.
“Please, show me Adija my mother” I said to it and before I knew what was happening, I saw Mama but I was heartbroken in the condition at which I saw her. Mama was sitted by the river crying and singing my favorite song…

..”Oh no!” I exclaimed as soon as I saw her. I was devastated. I dropped the mirror and then I sat on a chair pondering on what mama must have gone through following my absence.
“Mama must be thinking that I d!ed” I muttered to myself.
“What do I do now?” I asked myself with a finger on my cheek.
I dashed out of the room and headed straight to the Queen mermaid’s chamber,
I went on my knees as soon as I saw her.
“You know, whenever I see your face this way I know that all is not well” she said waggling her tail as she approached.
“Now tell me, what is it this time?” she asked as soon as she did with a hand placed on my shoulder.
I looked up straight into her eyes.
” I know you have a compassionate heart and the heart of a mother, please I beg of you to grant me this favor”
“Rise and sit” she said pointing at a chair close by.
I rose on my feet immediately and then sat on the chair without leaning my back.
“Come on, relax yourself and tell me whatever the problem is ” she said still standing before me
“Ermmm… It’s about… My mother. I don’t know if it’s possible for me to see her” I said with teary eyes.
“I do not understand. You are supposed to stay here permanently for three months remember? After which you will then decide either to remain here with us or go back to your world”
“I know. Please I know you can do this for me. I just want to see her and talk to her”
“That’s me breaking the rules of this kingdom. What you’re asking of me is quite difficult I must say” she said
And then the door came open, it was Siraf.
“What is going on here?” he questioned seeing my face cos it was obviously written that all wasn’t well.
“It’s Ojali. She wants to go back to her world to see her mother”
“What?! I thought…” Siraf was going to say something but I cut in.
“I’m not leaving you or this kingdom. I just want to see my mother. Look, I saw her through the mirror the Queen mermaid gave to and she’s by the river crying her eyes out as we speak”
“So, what exactly do you want the Queen mermaid to do for you?” Siraf questioned staring at me.
“To see and talk to her” I said adjusting myself on the chair I sat on.
Siraf turned to his mother.
“Mother, is what she wishes for possible?”
“You know the rules Siraf. I’m the Queen of this kingdom and you know the implications of breaking any rule. I wish I could but this is beyond me” she said.
“I have an idea. What if we change her identity so no mermaid would be able to recognise her once they see her? ” Said Siraf.
“What?! What if they see the new her around the river or in the river after her identity must have been changed? We all know each other remember?” the Queen mermaid said waggling her tail as she made her way to her chair and then sat on it.
“Mother it is not a sin or a taboo for another mermaid to be seen around this place. Everyone would think maybe she came from another river you know?” Siraf let out and at that point I looked at him with a smile.
“Just my kind of man” I thought to myself.
“You know, after full transformation into a different body again she can decide to even pay her mother a visit from time to time and no one would know she’s the same Ojali that was banished.” he said again looking at me with a wink.
I rushed up from where I sat and then gave him a tight hug.
“For this, you have a special place in my heart” I whispered.
“Ok love birds, agreed!” the queen mermaid said.
“So, how would you want the human transformation?” she queried with a hand rubbing the arm of her chair.
“Ermmm…” I said and then turned to look at Siraf but he only nodded beaming with smiles .
“I want to transform into a very beautiful maiden with long hair, silky skin and a broad wa!st so when I wear wa!st beads they would just sit perfectly like yours did when you used to come into our village, and to become a very good dancer. And…” I said turning my face aside.
“And?” the Queen mermaid asked.
“I would like to use the new me to get justice for my old self. I need to revisit those who betrayed me” I said turning to her.
“Done!” she said.
“Thank you, I’m grateful” I said with a smile and a bowed head.
“After your transformation, you must not look into the mirror when you’re in your world but you can do so here once you return. And the most important thing, you must not pass a night in your world. Always return to us as soon as it is dusk.” she said with a finger raised in the air.
I nodded sporadically.
“Grant her wish” she let out all of a sudden and before I knew it, I transformed into a totally different mermaid. Looking so ravishing in my new body.
“Wow!” Siraf and I exclaimed as soon as I transformed.
“Go now. When you get to the shore just run a hand over your head in circles three times, you will change form into a different human. Repeat same thing when you want to return here and be transformed back into a mermaid” the Queen mermaid said.
” Oh, I’m grateful” I said in excitement.
I held Siraf in a tight hug and then I whispered into his right ear.
“Thank you “
“You welcome” he whispered back and then held my both hands.
“Don’t be late” he added.
“I won’t” I said”
“Go now” Siraf let out
I hurried out of there as fast as I could. I was overjoyed and couldn’t wait to see mama again. Even though she wouldn’t know I’m her little girl at least seeing her would heal some of our wounds.
As soon as I arrived the shore, I ran a hand over my head three times and then I transformed into a very beautiful maiden. Mama was still around, I could hear her cry from where I stood. I walked towards her and then paused as soon as I saw her. She was sitted on the ground by the river with a hand on her jaw. Tears welled up in my eyes immediately but I had to quickly clean it up and then proceeded to where she sat.
“Mama!” I called.
She turned swiftly..
“Good day mama” I greeted bending my knees.
“Good day beautiful maiden.” She responded turning her face towards me and then turned back as soon as she did.
I was heartbroken seeing how she looked. She looked so lean and pale, and sick.
“Mama, are you ok? You have been here for a while now. I hope everything is ok? ” I asked.
“How come you know I have been here for a while?” she questioned looking into my eyes but I quickly turned my face aside.
“Do I know you? Are you from this village?” she questioned.
“Ermmm…ye… I mean no, I’m from the neighboring village. I have been sitting over there for a while now enjoying your song so I decided to come close” I said.
“Really? ” she asked wiping her tears with the back of her hands and then I squatted before her with a hand on her shoulder.
“Mama, are you ok? I’m sorry to ask but may I know why you’re crying?” I queried as tears filled my eyes again but I controlled it from pouring out.
She smiled, a smile I had missed so much.
“I am not ok” she said and then busted into tears.
“May I know what’s wrong?” I queried again.
“My daughter, I miss her so much” she said wiping her tears with the helm of her wrapper.
“Where is she? What happened to her?”
“She’s de@d. She was sh0t right here by the palace guards but her body was never found. They said she fell into the water as soon as she was sh0t. I miss her so much, she was the best thing that had ever happened to me”
At that point i could no longer control my tears, I cried along with her.
“They said she used magic during the dance festival and was then banished cos of that. But I don’t believe she did use magic even though she refused to tell me how she was able to dance during the festival but unable to dance at the palace when she was summoned to redo the dance so they could find out if she truly used magic or not, not being a good dancer”
She looked up all of a sudden and then looked straight into my eyes…
“I know this feeling, my instincts never lie. Who really are you ?”…
