EPISODE SEVENTEEN.
MY HUSBAND SECOND WIFE
(That which you seek, you shall find in abundance)
Winnie smiled faintly and replied in a soft voice, “I just wanted to tell you that you should bring Chioma along,” before losing consciousness the moment she finished speaking. Written by authoress Winnie. B Onuh.
“Babe! Babe! Winnie!” Christian shook her gently, but she didn’t respond. Panicked, he rushed her to his car, just in time for the police to arrive. They quickly grabbed the now-conscious Solomon, who was still confused by the sudden presence of the officers in his house.
“Mr. Man, move immediately!” They barked at him before dragging him to the car.
As Christian sped down the road with one hand on the wheel, he used his free hand to dial his family doctor’s number. It rang twice before the line was picked up.
“Man, you just know the exact time to call me, I was just—”
“Where are you?” Christian’s anxious voice cut through the doctor’s words.
Surprised by the urgency in his tone, the doctor replied, “I just got home. Is everything okay?”
“Doctor, I need you to come back to the hospital immediately,” Christian said urgently. “I need your help. My friend here fainted and she’s not breathing well. I checked her pulse, and it’s very faint. This lady had a miscarriage a month ago and hasn’t fully healed yet. That son of a b*tch had the guts to beat her to a pulp… Please, I’m driving straight to your hospital right now.”
“I’m on my way,” the doctor replied before dropping the call. He hadn’t heard this kind of fear in Christian’s voice before. He didn’t know who the lady was, but she must be someone of great importance to him.
At the hospital, five days had passed, and Winnie was still unconscious.
“Why hasn’t she woken up?!” Christian’s impatience was growing. He anxiously paced back and forth in her hospital room. He had walked this same path repeatedly, day and night, over the last five days.
“Bro, stop pacing around and go home. The doctor already said she’s fine and will wake up in no time,” Angela, his kid sister, spoke up. She had been sitting on a sofa, reading for her exams.
Since the day Winnie was admitted to the hospital, Christian had practically refused to go home. Angela didn’t know much about the woman except for what little her brother had briefed her on, but she could tell that this lady meant a lot to Christian. She had never seen him so worried about anyone before — not even her, sadly.
Christian gritted his teeth, his jaw tightening. “It’s been five days. Five f**king days, and she’s still lying there…” he muttered. Frustrated, he ran his hand through his hair, leaving it perpetually disheveled.
Angela raised an eyebrow as she glanced at the sleeping lady for a moment, then shifted her gaze to her once composed, domineering, and calculative brother — now looking utterly exhausted. His dark circles had deepened, and heavy bags were visible under his eyes.
She sighed and said, “I know, but let’s trust the doctor’s words and wait. Besides, you wouldn’t want her to see you like this. To be honest, brother, you stink and need a good shower, food, and rest. Just give yourself five hours, and I promise she’ll be awake by the time you get back.”
Christian let out a deep sigh. “But it’s been five days! I mean, how…” written by Authiress Winnie . B. Onuh
“Shhh!” Angela interrupted him with a frown. “Go already. Maybe your bad breath is what’s keeping her from waking up. Come on, bro, take a look at yourself in the mirror. You look like a mess.”
Knowing that once his sister started talking, she wouldn’t stop until she got her way, Christian had no choice but to listen to her. “You’ll call me once she’s awake, right?”
“Definitely. You’ll be the first person I call, even before the doctor. Now, go!” she urged him.
Christian took one last long look at Winnie before walking away.
Angela let out a deep sigh of relief when she succeeded in sending Christian away. She then shifted her attention back to the lady on the bed.
“You’re really pretty,” she said with a chuckle, glancing at Winnie. “But I wonder what you did to my brother to make him act this way.” She shook her head before going back to her reading.
A few hours later, Angela had dozed off, her books still resting on her lap.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Winnie groaned, growing more agitated at the obnoxious sound. Why won’t it just shut up? As she tried to move her hand, a sharp pain shot through her body. It felt as though she had been run over by a truck. Everything hurt—especially her back and her head.
Suddenly, an intense thirst overwhelmed her.
“W-water… I need… water…” she could barely get the words out, her voice faint and scratchy from days of dehydration.
Being a deep sleeper, Angela didn’t hear Winnie’s faint cries for water. She remained deep in sleep, exhausted from studying all night for her final exams.
Winnie slowly opened her eyes and immediately noticed the sterile white walls of a hospital room. As she tilted her head to look around, her gaze landed on a lady sitting by the bed, deeply asleep, with books resting on her lap.
Staring at the lady, Winnie felt a strange familiarity but couldn’t quite place where she’d seen her before.
She tried to sit up, but the effort was excruciating. Both of her hands were hooked to an IV drip, and her stomach felt as though it had been tightly bandaged. The pain made it hard to move, and she struggled to call out for help.
Just then, the door creaked open, and Christian appeared in the doorway.
Seeing that she was awake, he rushed to her side, gently wrapping his arms around her.
Winnie froze in surprise, her arms lying limply at her sides. Christian hunched over her, enveloping her in a tight embrace as if she were the only thing that mattered in the world. Her ear pressed against his chest, and she could hear his rapid heartbeat, erratic and full of fear. She felt his arms tremble and tighten around her, unwilling to let go.
Her eyes softened as she watched him, realizing how much he truly cared. A wave of regret washed over her for not accepting his offer to stay with him when he had first suggested it.
“Christian…” her voice was muffled by his bear hug.
“I’m not letting you go,” he said stubbornly, his voice thick with emotion.
Winnie gave a small smile, her lips barely parting. “But I’m thirsty.” Written by Authoress Winnie . B. Onuh.
Christian held her for a few seconds longer before gently standing up to get her some water from the small fridge in the room.
He opened the bottle, then carefully helped her sit up, holding the water to her lips. Winnie drank quickly, nearly finishing the entire bottle. She let out a sigh of relief as the thirst she hadn’t even realized she felt was finally quenched.
“Does it hurt anywhere? Should I get the doctor?” Christian asked, brushing the mess of hair out of her face with gentle fingers.
Winnie nodded, wincing slightly. “My back hurts… and my stomach.” She remembered how she had slammed her back against the wall, the painful hits that had kept coming.
Christian’s jaw tightened with anger. “I should have killed that bast*rd that night,” he muttered under his breath.
Winnie gave him a small smile, finally taking notice of his appearance. He was still handsome, but the polished, composed man she once knew was gone. His eyes were clouded with distress. It was clear that he had been deeply upset for a long time. He looked like he hadn’t slept in days. Written by Authoress Winnie l. B. Onuh.
“When was the last time you slept or had something to eat?” she asked, her voice soft but direct.
Her question caught him off guard. Trying to avoid the topic, Christian glanced over at his sister, still deeply asleep in the chair. He knew if she didn’t wake up soon, her neck would be sore from the awkward position. Gently, he tapped her on the shoulder.
“Angela, wake up and go home,” he said quietly.
“Uh… you’re back?” Angela replied groggily, rubbing her eyes. “Is she awake?”
She turned to look at Winnie, who was now wide awake and staring back at her. Angela stood up and walked toward her bed with a gentle smile. “Thank God, you’re finally awake. I thought my brother was going crazy when you didn’t wake up for days.”
“Days…?” Winnie blinked in confusion, slowly repeating the word.
“Yes, you were unconscious for five days,” Angela explained. “And my brother… he stayed here the entire time, refusing to go home. He wouldn’t even take a proper bath, just brushed his teeth and had some light snacks.”
Her words earned her a deadly glare from Christian.
“Your time is up, go home and rest. You have exams tomorrow,” he said, warning her with his eyes not to say another word.
Angela caught the hint and twitched her lips at him before focusing her gaze back on Winnie.
“I’m so glad you’re awake. My name is Angela, and from the look of things, you might be my future sis-in-law,” she said with a wink, lowering her voice, she added, “I’ve never seen my brother so worried over someone before… not even me.”
“Angela…” Christian growled at her, and she laughed. Winnie smiled as she replied.
“Thank you, Angela, for everything, and I wish you the best of luck in your exams.”
“Thanks, I’ll be back tomorrow after my papers… then I’ll leave you two lovebirds to have some privacy.” Angela winked and dashed out of the room.
Winnie watched her leave before muttering, “Your sister is really likable and very cheerful.”
“And also stubborn,” Christian added, sitting down beside her on the bed. Wirtten by Authoress Winnie. B. Onuh.
“You haven’t been sleeping?” Winnie asked, giving him an accusing glance.
He shrugged. “Not my fault, I couldn’t sleep… but I can now,” he said, his usual mischievous smile returning.
“You want to go home?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.
He shook his head. “No.”
“Then where do you intend to sleep?”
“Right here, with you,” Christian replied, already taking off his shoes and making himself comfortable on the bed.
Hearing that, a blush spread across her cheeks as she watched him, lost in thought.
Noticing the slight blush, the corner of his lips curved into a smirk. He raised his head and whispered in her ear,
“What are you thinking about? I only wanted to sleep with
you, not sleep with you.”
She shivered, his warm breath tickling her skin. She looked away and muttered,
“What are you babbling about? Does that even make sense to you?”
“It doesn’t matter, just cuddle me. I want to sleep next to you,” Christian whispered, helping her lie down. Winnie tried to protest. Written by Authiress Winnie Onuh.
“I don’t think we should…”
“Don’t overthink it, Winnie. I just want to sleep.” He flashed her his mischievous smile, glad she was alive and arguing with him again.
“I was so scared. Scared that I wouldn’t see you again,” he whispered after a few moments of silence.
Her heart pounded at his words. Surprised by how much they affected her, Winnie smiled. “That beating wasn’t enough to kill me, I’ve taken worse before.”
“It’s not funny,” Christian whispered, his deep frown returning. He turned toward her, studying her pale face for a moment before gently placing a soft kiss on her forehead. Written by Authoress Winnie . B. Onuh.
“You look beautiful, and I promise I won’t let any man lay a finger on you ever again.”
“That’s a big promise, Christian,” she mused.
“One I’m more than willing to keep,” he replied in an assuring tone.
