MUSIC IN THE RAIN Episode 1 – Amah’s Heart

” All scanned and packed into your boot, here is your glocery list and credit card, will you like any other thing Mrs Craig?
She help the elderly woman as she struggle to get up from where she sat,
She gently walked with her to where her car was parked,
The elderly woman who is generally called Mrs Craig looked up at her then back to her items which was packed up into the car,

The young sales girl with a beautiful smile who looks so much like her late daughter gave her exceptional services,
She has a nice set of teeth and and attractive smile Just like violet,
Mrs Craig gave a satisfying smile “Thank you Violet, that will be all for today..,
“Mrs Craig is not violet, you are always calling me that. I’m Betty..,

Mrs Craig waved her hands apologetically and said,
“Pardon me Betty, I’m always too forgetful this days, Violet is my daughter’s name. You appear so much like her. She died of leukaemia, did not make it out in her last chemo and that has being 15 years exact…
Betty patiently waited as she speak. Mrs Craig has never fails to tell her the story of her late daughter Violet everyday she comes to the grocery store.

Mrs Craig was always saying same old tales Betty has heard severally.
Betty can’t walk away from her or stop her from speaking out her pain all she did was to listen and drop her condolences speech which Mrs Craig always want to hear.

“I’m sorry Mrs Craig, I believe your daughter Violet is in a better place now. I’m so sorry I need to head back to work now. please tell your grandson to drive you down next time. Is not safe for you to be driving yourself.
“Ooh, I told you about my grandson. Did I tell you I have a grandson….I can’t even remember saying that. Philip thinks I’m suffering from dementia. My grandson thinks ill of me and I don’t believe that or he maybe right but I hate to hear him say that to me..

“Is alright Mrs Craig, maybe I will stop by twice in a week to take your grocery list.
Mrs Craig thanked her again before walking into her car and drive off.
Betty returned to her duty and took over from her colleague who was waiting for her.
“Hey Betty you almost spent all day with your old friend… been here waiting for you.

“You mean Mrs Craig? I’m sorry. You did not want to attend to her and I decided to do that don’t blame me. Mrs Craig maybe suffering from dementia. She forgets everything she has ever said to me before and she can’t stop telling me about her late daughter…

Camdy shakes her head pathetically when Betty told her about Mrs Craig condition.
“Don’t you ever get tired of hearing same thing all over. Like repeatedly. That’s more reason why I hate to attend to her. You are too patient with people and I’m not really that patient. Mrs Craig need help and she must come in term with that fact and get some help. She can’t even be driving all by herself before she drives into someone compound thinking is her house…

“Take it easy on the old woman camdy. Almost everyone in this small part of Brooks knows Mrs Craig and Because I have a grandma back home so I learn to respect the elderly folks…
They were still talking when a customer walked up to them
Camdy moved to a far end and pretend to be busy. She has never like the woman because of her over righteous attitude.

Betty knew the customer very well. Popular Mrs Smith who sings in their church choir.
“Hello Mrs Smith…
Betty greeted cheerfully.
“Hello Betty. Mrs replied with a smile.
She dropped all the things for Betty to scan.

After the sales was over she said
” How is your grandma… I did not see her in church on Sunday. Is she alright?
” She is good and she was in church too…
“Really…I probably got caught up with other things after the service that I didn’t get to see her. Always having important people to say hello to and I can’t notice everyone. Are you running a full shift now… aren’t you thinking of attending college…

Mrs Smith said.
“Not full shift, only morning and afternoon and I do evening at the bakers shop down the road. I’m saving for my music class, is quiet expensive. I can’t afford college tuition and I don’t have passion for it. I’m also saving for my sister’s too. I want to see her graduate from high school and pursue her dreams. Music is what I want to do and I’m getting fully registered by next month.

Mrs Smith frown before saying.
“Is good to have passion for something but getting a degree will take you places. Take a look at my son, he is doing well in college and I’m so proud of him. Think about it and say hello to your grandma.
Mrs Smith look towards where camdy stood and said.

” Child, do not allow the devil to destroy your soul. I can see you battle with stubbornness and lying spirit. Tell the devil to let go of you so you will be free from hell
Camdy gave a loud annoying sigh to Mrs Smith who suddenly shakes her body as if she caught the holy spirit.
She looked up to the ceiling and said.

” Oh Jesus…save her dying soul from condemnation…Mmmh…mmmh…. glory… glory…
Mrs Smith walked away with her glocery bag shouting glory and waving her spare hands up
Camdy came back to where Betty was.

“Why do she always think everyone needs her advice except her family. She can aswell advice her son who hides to do drugs or her husband’s mistress who drives around town shamelessly. She thinks going to shout hallelujah evey Sunday in church makes her a saint and every other person a demon. Rubbish! Mrs Smith can shove her advice below her ass, none of her words has meaning…she doesn’t pay my bills. This little town called Brook is possessed with crazy and annoying people. I’m out of here.
Camdy who couldn’t hide her annoyance voiced out angrily before leaving.

After Betty finished from the glocery store she handed over to another person who runs the evening shift.
She changed up before moving to the bakery shop down the road where she worked every evening.
After she was done for the day she took the general bus home.

As the month was about to end, Betty sat in the room she shares with Alice her sister counting all her savings.
Alice walked into the room and exclaimed on seeing all the money in front of Betty.
She calls out to her grandmother immediately “Eunice… Eunice come right here, Betty got lots of money… Eunice get your wrinkled legs down here quick…

Alice screamed out arrogantly, hastening her grandmother to come.
The elderly woman came to stand by the door and said.
” You child, I have warned you to show some respect to me. I swear it I will kick your ass real hard next time if you go screaming my name with no respect. Betty you got to put a strong warning sign to your damaged sister’s head. She was sent to school to learn manners and get good grades and not to disrespect the elders.

Alice laugh sarcastically and ran to another far end before her grandmother could get to her
Betty pause from counting her money and look towards her sister.
“Alice you gat to listen to grandma Eunice and stop laughing. That’s not funny at all. You aren’t getting paid for being nutty all the time.

” Hey…i was just joking, y’all should take a chill pill. Stop getting your nerves works out because of some silly joke I made and I wanted grandma to ask you where you got all that money from… that’s so much money, you stole them right?

Alice shouted back at her sister. Betty ignored her and went back counting her money
Eunice, there Granma replied Alice.
” Alice your sister works. She gets paid for working and have been saving hard for her music class so stop asking silly questions…
Betty started dividing the money into four part.

” Betty, can I get some cash. I mean I have been asking for weeks now to be able to get a new skate shoes and also for school tour which I wish to partake in but I don’t have any ticket money. I know you gave me some cash last week but I used it to get another back pack and I got Winter socks for Granma Eunice…

Betty, please I will get a job after I’m through with high school and I will not have to be a pest any more…
Alice kept talking. Betty took the smaller part of the money and stretch towards Alice who rushed and collected it.
Thanking her happily as she rush out of the room.
Betty hand another part of the money to her grandmother.

Eunice smile and said
” my child If you give out all your savings which one will you use in registering for music class. You have always wanted to attend one of the best music class in Brooks and that will take alot of money.
“Grandma, is my own little way of supporting the house upkeep. Feeding and bills accumulates and you can’t always do it alone. I promised to always do my best for you and for Alice. You have being trying with your own little pay. Which is never enough now is time to show support.

My music class will still hold. When I collect my next pay cheque I will use it in completing the money for registration. No limitation Granma…no limitation. Nothing will stop me from attending the music class… will be my dream come true. I will stop the evening shift at the bakery and focus on the glocery store so that after the afternoon shift I will use the evening for my class…

Betty and her sister had a good evening talking about what they want to achieve in life and listening to Eunice old jokes.
Betty retired to the bed, she sat on her bed rehearsing her old written songs.

She slept late after the long rehearsal and playing some town music
She continued her usual work shift until her next pay cheque came.
Betty begged camdy to take her shift while she goes to pay up for her music class.

Immediately camdy resumed Betty’s shift that day she saw Mrs Smith
coming to pay up with her things.
Camdy gave a heavy sigh as she started checking if Betty was still around so that she can come and attend to Mrs Smith by herself.

But Betty was gone and camdy had no choice than to attend to one of her old enemies.
She started scanning her things without a word to her.
“Hey devil’s child, where is Betty?
Mrs Smith asked camdy who ignored her and kept scanning.

” Do you know the devil is a liar over you. You gat to start speaking that out before he destroys you…
Camdy packed up her items, count her money and handed the glocery bag to her before saying.
“Mrs Smith, when you get home give your son same advise because I don’t need it. You can leave so that I can attend to the next customer… have nice day ma’am and one more thing stop calling me devil’s child cos I got no business with the devil but your son do…

Mrs Smith was furious at camdy and said.
” My son got admission into college and he is going to become one of Brooks finest medical doctor. I’m so proud of him but you have sold your soul to the devil and he will destroy you. Get behind me you little spoilt brat

because I’m bible quoting, Satan bashing and candidate for heaven. Do not attend to me again. Next time if Betty is not on her shift and you are the only one here I will drop back the things I picked and return another day. I can’t have a devil’s child attending to me..

Camdy did not pay her any attention. She started attending to the next customer.
Mrs Smith kept rebuking her before walking out.
The man that camdy was attending to has difficulty with hearing. He has a hearing aid fixed in his ears.
He said to camdy

” I noticed Mrs Smith mouth was moving repeatedly, she appears to be angry. What exactly was she saying…
Camdy wrote down the price for the man who quickly paid up.
After collecting her money she said to him.

” Do you know why the young vibrant youth in Honey Brook kept leaving the old behind is because the elderly ones refuse to mind their business. Mr Seaman mind your business it will help you alot.
The man who did not hear anything that camdy said asked her to repeat herself more louder so that he can hear.
Camdy screamed into his ears.

“I said mind your business Mr Seaman… get the hell out here I’m done with you…
Mr Seaman turned and looked at her confused.

” ooh you mean I should mind my business. Did you know My son is outside, I can get him to slap your mouth for being so rude to me. I see why Mrs Smith was so angry before leaving because you are a rude lady. Where’s the other Beautiful lady that takes this shift? I always give her some tips for being so cheerful but you will never get a free dime from me..

“Keep your damn money, I don’t need it. I’m okay with what i get. I’m not cheerful to disturbing old folks like y’all who poke nose into other people’s personal affair.
Camdy said quietly knowing well that Mr Seaman will not hear her Mr Seaman left with his things.
Camdy boiled angrily as she saw Mrs Craig walking down with her list to ask for Betty.

She swore under her breath and wondered why is Only elderly people that kept coming today that she was helping Betty on her afternoon shift

“How do Betty even manage all this crazy old people without getting pissed. They are driving me insane. I will not take over for Betty next time…I will not run this afternoon shift. Is filled with annoying set of Brook men and women .
Camdy cursed again as she watched Mrs Craig get closer.
