LASGIDY LINKS Episode 32 by Adewrites
“Tell me what happened between you and Tinuke, and nothing but the truth ” I exclaimed.
She narrated.
“He visited me in school and we were together when he asked for sex, I declined politely but it wasn’t okay with him, he forced himself on me.
I cried.
He apologized and promised me that it won’t happen again, I was in 200L then, I had no one, he was the only one I had, he also sorted out financial issues in our house then, I had no option than to forgive him and move on. He bought me a car to apologize and also promised to get me a job after school. He had nothing to lose, I had everything to lose.” She explained
I heaved a deep sigh, her story was totally different from what Tinuke told me. Tinuke claimed she slept with her dad and he bought her a car, she also claimed that her dad got her a job because she threatened to expose him.
“Did you bring me this document to revenge what he did to you?” I asked.
” No I didn’t, I just don’t want him to hurt another person again, not when I know what he is capable of doing. ” she said.
I was exhausted and couldn’t think straight anymore, stories upon stories, I needed to clear my head, I needed to go home.
It was getting late. “I should be going home” I said and stood up. She escorted me to the gate, I was about to exit the gate when she called my name.
“Yemi, I know you don’t believe everything I’ve said, I know you believe no one now but I swear, I didn’t know anything about this plan and everything I told you is true” she said.
I nodded my head and left. I was drowning in my thoughts, I was trying to figure out what I would do, who I should talk to or what not to do, I didn’t know when I trekked from Toyin street to Ikeja under the bridge. I got home and collapsed on the bed. My mouth didn’t taste good enough to know the taste of any food that night.
The morning came so fast, I got to work and a meeting was called concerning the project. Everyone was already in the meeting room when I joined them. The PS welcomed us all and started talking about how far we had gone on the project and out plans. In her words.
“We have 10 days to the day of your trip, the governor has given us the go ahead to make our research about what we are going to bring in and send in our quotation within 72 hours, that means we have to act fast, we have contacted some companies in China, we are going to chose the one that best suit our budget. We hope to hear from them tomorrow, if we do, that means we would have another meeting tomorrow to see what they have for us. After the presentation, we can now prepare our quotations and send it to the governor, the committees have to sign this document to show that they approve the budget and also trust the product.” She explained.
One of the committees protested and queried why the research of the equipment was carried out by an external body that is not a member of the committee.
“We shouldn’t be hearing this, there is a reason why the committee was setup, we are meant to oversee everything concerning the project, we should be the one to choose the product suitable for the project and also chose the company that has the best deal, carrying out research on product and company without the consent of the committee is totally unacceptable” he exclaimed.
Other members of the committees supported him. I didn’t say a word. It turned to a misunderstanding among other directors and the committee.
The PS called the house to order, she turned to me and asked what I had to say since I was the chairman.
I was short of words. I locked my fingers and looked lost like a stray dog.
“I believe we are working towards a goal and I don’t think there is anything bad in it if a non committee member helps out on this research of this project, we shouldn’t take it too far since we don’t have a hidden agenda, I am fine by any product or company in as much it is suitable for the project at hand” I said.
My statement caused an instinct chattering among the members of the committee and other people in the house. The PS brought the meeting to an end and people started leaving for their respective offices. The members of the committee left before anyone did. It was clearly obvious that they did not agree with me.
The PS escorted me to the stairs. ” That was a good statement Yemi.” She said and patted my shoulder. She went back to her office. I went straight to the DFA’s office to have some words with him concerning the meeting. He seemed not excited with my words.
I was done fighting with my thoughts, I needed to start holding the bull by it’s horn, I needed to put on the cap of intelligence to tackle the whole thing.
I needed to start with someone and Its the DFA.
I got to his office and the smile he gave me was obviously a fake one, he hid his anger under the pretense of his smile.
“My chairman, how are you today?” He said as he offered me a seat. I sat down and rested my hands on his table. He looked at me blankly like someone that had no idea of why I was in his office.
“I hope all is well.” He said.
“Sir, I have come to you concerning the project at hand and how we are going to do it, do you have any word of advice or suggestion for me sir?” I asked.
The statement hit him hard like a brick in the head, it felt as if I had set a trap of words on his tongue because any word he was about to say would detonate the time bomb of the loaded information I already had.
He heaved a deep sigh before talking.
“My chairman, I think you are chosen for a particular reason, I am just to make sure the project is financed, we should make sure that the project is well executed without any alteration. This is also an opportunity for everyone of us in the committee” he said.
“Opportunity? What do you mean by opportunity sir?” I queried.
He stood up from his seat and paced his office with his hands on his pocket and his head down staring at his feet.
“See Yemi, that project is not part of anyone’s job function, not mine, not yours, it is just an extra job that we are consulted to carry out because of our competency and knowledge. And trust me, nothing will come out of it aside the fully funded trip and other miscellaneous expenses concerning us. What about the money for stress and others?” He exclaimed.
I stared at him, he went back to his seat and relaxed on his chair.
“My chairman, I have arranged you a car already, an exotic one, you won’t have to join the staff bus or transport bus anymore, i’m sure you’ll want to change your apartment too, don’t worry about the search, I have already secured one for you on the island and I have paid. The keys will be handed over to you tomorrow when they are done cleaning the apartment and servicing the car. I thought of handing them over to you when we are back from the trip but I need to make you taste a tip of what you would enjoy if you allow us to carry out this project on a win-win basis” he said.
He l showed me the picture of the car and the apartment. A navy blue Benz car and a two bedroom luxurious serviced apartment. They were eye catching. I couldn’t stop staring at them. He noticed my reaction and continued.
” This is a tip of an iceberg, more is coming, you see, I like you personally that’s why I made sure you are on this team, you deserve a better life, it is left to you to either accept it or reject it, I wanted to make it a surprise before but you got to know earlier. I am not the only one doing this, it is an collective effort from me and the other members of the committee” He said.
I was trapped.
Despite knowing their plans and the risk, I wanted a good life too. The picture of the car and the apartment registered in my brain. They could be mine in few days if I key into the plan and I could lose them and return to my house in the slum at fagba if I didn’t accept the offer.
I am confused.
Hard guy hard guy, I have seen luxury, my bone don soft
What should I do?
