I Remember That Morning – Iyabo Oyetunji
I remember that morning, before the morning devotion, my dad said to me;
“Iyabo, na you go lead us in prayer this morning”
Without hesitation, I started.
“Your hands”
Owo!
Owo!!
My parents started clapping, then I started singing.
“HE has done for me, HE has done for me, HE has done for me, oooooo, HE has done for me.
What my father cannot do, HE has done for me, what my mother cannot do, HE has done for me”
I sang the Igbo,Yoruba, Hausa and Chinese version.
My parents were just looking at me, as I was singing it joyfully.
2weeks later, I returned from school, I went to meet my dad and said,
“Daddy, our teacher said, if we are coming to the school tomorrow, we should come with 2 brooms, 4 canes, 5 toilet tissues, and #120”
My dad looked at me, sarcastically and replied,
“The one wey God has done for you, that your father cannot do, you don use am finish?”
In my mind, I was like
“ahhan! Na me sing the song? No be gospel artist sing am?”
As I was about to defend myself, my dad replied,
“Go and meet your mother, maybe she can do it for you, since your father cannot do it”
My mother didn’t allowed him finished the statement, she protested from the kitchen.
“Baba Iyabo, pls stop that rough play. If the father cannot do it, is it the mother that will do it?
You were there when she said I cannot do anything”
Later that night, my dad told me I would lead the night devotion.
I started thinking of the song to sing, I have to go to school with
those items I mentioned above, so, I shouldn’t provoked them further.
My parents were looking at me, to see the song I would sing.
I replied,
“Close your eyes, and be in the mood of worship”
They both closed their eyes.
I started scanning my brain, to think of a sweet gospel song to present, the song that came out from my mouth was,
“Good morning Jesus, good morning Lord”
My father??????
Haaaaaaaaa! Iyabo!!
“Are you okay?
Good morning, this night?”
Till now anytime I remember I laugh, laugh and laugh…..
Infact, I’m still laughing ooo?????????????????????????
