DOPE Episode 7 by Erasmus Ugochukwu Okafor
**Coup d’etat**
Hugo and Jose left for the coast where the money was hidden.
Getting to the location, Hugo wore his diving suit and the scuba and went underwater in search of the money while Jose waited for him at the shore.
On getting to the exact location using the GPS tracker that Jose provided, Hugo discovered that the money was gone which quickly made him realise that Stone Antonio could have been tipped about the money and its location.
Hugo quickly got out from the water and met Jose who was waiting ashore. With fury, frustration, and confusion, he stood still as Jose waited for him to give the report of the progress report but the expression on his nephew’s face was pronounced enough to explain that all wasn’t well. At this point, Jose was concerned and curious for the news.
“The money is gone and I know who is responsible. I’m going back to Brazil to face my arch enemy and take back what belongs to me,”
“Just be careful,” Jose urged and patted his back, “Drug dealers are brutal, so try and be one step ahead,”
Jose was shocked but he pretended to be in control just to make Hugo not to be tensed.
“I think he’s the one that is one step ahead, by being shrewd and clever but I must crush him like a fly,” he vauntingly said and left immediately.
Hugo left Florida back to Brazil to confront Stone but when he landed at the airport, he was surprised to get a text message from Gustavo informing him that Stone had convinced most of the cartel members to support his candidacy. He also informed him that Stone was currently attacking those that didn’t join.
Hugo was tensed after reading the text message. Without hesitation, he called Gustavo severally to get more information but Gustavo never took his calls signifying that something bad must have happened to the cartel.
In a jiffy, a call came from Gustavo, which Hugo took without delay as his heart throbbed with anger.
“What’s going on there?” Hugo shouted, “I got your text message and I’m worried about you,”
“Stone is currently looking for me all over the white estate to kill me but there is nowhere I can hide. I may have died before you reach here; meanwhile, you should be careful because heavily armed guards are waiting for your arrival,”
“Go to my bedroom, just find your way into my room, because that’s the only location where you can be safe,” Hugo wailed.
Suddenly, he stopped hearing Gustavo’s whisper over the phone but heard gunshots all over the background which made him think that Gustavo was already killed.
Hugo found his way back to the mansion but he couldn’t sneak back in because Stone and his gang of the brotherhood of the deadly skull had invaded and sieged the entire environs as the continued shooting sporadically in the air. He was taken aback when a drone started hovering in the air. All of a sudden, his phone buzzed and it was Gustavo.
Without hesitation, he picked as his hands shivered, “Gustavo, what’s the situation in there?”
“You went in search of the hidden treasure and you think you’re smart,” Stone said, making it clear to him that Gustavo had been cracked with interrogations.
“What have you done to him, you bastard? If I come over there I’ll dismember you?” Hugo growled with anger, still looking for a way to break into the compound and save Gustavo who must have been injured to the point that he’d be on the brink of death, “Put him on phone, now”
“I don’t take orders from you,” Stone gnarled gritting in rage.
“You found your way to Florida and took the money that doesn’t belong to you. You’re treacherous and mischievous but that miserable life of yours will be taking away by my hands in a wink,” Hugo threatened.
“I guess I don’t have any other thing to do with your man, especially having gotten the information about the money, which is my own sweat with Ramon, but he chose to be selfish to keep it away from me. I must recover that money and kill you the way I killed your dad,”
It was then obvious and clear to Hugo that Stone wasn’t in possession of the money yet, so he had to act fast to discover it because Stone could lay his hands on it, because if the vicious rival get’s to it first, that means that he’s left with nothing since his position as the cartel leader had been usurped.
Out of anger, Hugo pounced down on the guard by the gate and killed him immediately. He collected his gun and fought his way to the main building to locate Gustavo and save him.
He was lucky to meet Andre Italo who fought alongside with him just as he’d always done as his personal bodyguard. As they fought, they sustained some injuries but still made their way into the hallways that led to bedroom and inner room.
Sighting Stone made Hugo want to go after him when he still could but there were hefty tattooed men that surrounded him which made it hard to come closer. As they exchange gunshots with the men in a bid to kill Stone Antonio, Andre was shot in the arm but he continued fighting. It became so challenging that they had to retreat for the moment.
As they fought their way into the bedroom to locate the secret exit that Jose revealed, they met Gustavo who was lying lifeless on the floor with blood all over him but still had some pulses.
“Gustavo!” Hugo screamed and tried to revive him, “Andre shield me!”
Andre kept shooting to protect Hugo as he dragged Gustavo into the bedroom. They shut the bulletproof door to buy some time.
Gustavo couldn’t utter a word but fought hard to stay a life but he already lost much blood, so he smiled with tears blurring his eyes and died immediately.
Hugo was so angry and wanted to break open the door and allow the enemies to enter so that he’d kill as many as he could before killing himself, but Andre Italo pulled him back vehemently and warned: “He who fights and runs today, lives to fight the next day. Keep yourself alive because there is nothing more important than that,”
Andre’s last words reminded Hugo of Ramon’s usual slogan which made him act fast to locate the hidden exit door. Following Jose’s instruction he found the buttons and imputed the password with few jab as he was directed.
Suddenly, the spacious bed parted, with each half pulling aside until a door was revealed leading to a basement.
They entered the basement and immediately locked the steel door.
When Stone and his men finally succeeded in breaking down the bulletproof door, they couldn’t find Hugo, which got them confused because there was no other exit door that he could locate.
He went on a serious search and found the hidden door but didn’t have the password to unlock it. It was almost impossible for them to break the steel door.
Hugo and Andre ran as fast as they could until they located the exit that led them into a garage where many cars and a chopper were kept. They took one of the cars and drove out and entered the streets.
Getting to the airport where the pilot was already waiting for them, they took off to Florida to search for the missing money before Stone comes for the same purpose.
The death of Hugo’s best friend, Gustavo kept lingering in his mind as their journey to Florida lasted. He was filled with tears for losing another closest friend he considered a family. He couldn’t stop crying as he allowed the free flow of his tears that got his cloth watered and possessed by them. He couldn’t imagine that Stone just ended up killing two of his closest men- his dad and Gustavo.
It was then that it began to dawn on Hugo that his dad had been right that the nature of his business demands fighting for survival, meaning that homicide cannot be separated from the drug business.
He was weak at this time and filled with deep thoughts. Hugo couldn’t just believe that Gustavo just died and left him to mourn just as he did when his dad died.
Hugo’s eyes remained reddish with tears throughout the hours he spent in the aeroplane on his way to the US.
