CHAPTER 5
Nkem kept thinking of what to do and how to escape from the unknown death plan her father's new wife and the strange man had set for them. She really wanted to be alive for her mum's sake.
After they had finished eating, Nkem went to wash the plates while Amanda helped her to rinse. When they were done washing, Nkem helped Amanda to sweep some part of the building.
Something occured to Nkem, in order to survive a plan that is unknown to her, it was better she was not available for the plan to be executed. She started thinking of running away with her sister. But how will she run away with her sister when her father’s wife was always in the parlor?
Even if she runs away, where will she run to?
When they were done with their chores and the visitor had left. The time was 5pm and Mirabel had gone into her room. Nkem thought it wise to quickly run away with the opportunity they got.
Where they would run to she couldn't tell.Nkem changed her clothes and her sister’s. She put some clothes inside their school bags and they both carried theirs each. When they got to the gate , it was bolted from inside and the gateman was in his room. Nkem unbolted the gate slowly and quietly then left the house with her little sister Amanda.
Nkem wanted to go to doctor Frank's house but he may take her back to her father's house. Or maybe her father will come looking for them at his place. Doctor Frank may take them back and their step mother will beat them for running away.
Going to her mother's friends place was still another option but it will still get them back to their father's house. If that happens, there would no longer be an escape for them. Nkem wanted to go far away from her father's wife. She feared what she will do to them if they went back after running away.

Yeah Good evening my dear the man who was standing by the roadside replied. How can I help you girls?
We are sisters and we are looking for the nearest orphanage, our parents are dead. We hope to find one soon. Nkem couldn't tell why she said that, or how she said it. She never had any thought of going to any orphanage.
The man took pity on the little girls, he would have taken them to his house but he was not yet married. People seeing two little girls in his house will raise a lot of questions.
He was on his way home but decided to play the role of a Samaritan. He didn't know any orphanage around so he decided to ask.
From the answers he got, the nearest orphanage was about 2hrs journey. He looked at the girls and they looked pitiful so he took it upon himself to take them to the orphanage.
After the long journey, they finally got to the orphanage. What are your names He asked..My name is Nkem and she is my Little sister Amanda Nkem said. My name is Felix the man said with a smile. He left them at the gate and went his way waving them goodbye.
Daniel walked into the house and met Mirabel sitting on the cushion chair sweating profusely. Welcome Honey Mirabel said with a shaky voice.
How are you and the baby doing Daniel asked coming closer to her.
We are fine. We are doing just fine Mirabel said looking restless…
Is anything the problem?
Why are you sweating? Daniel asked curiously..
Nothing .. everything is okay , go freshen up and come eat Mirabel said trying to keep calm in the situation.
Talking about food, where are the girls?Nkem and Amanda…

Daniel raised his brows looking at Mirabel and waiting for answers.
They are sleeping in their room and before you ask, yes I was a mother to them. I made sure they ate to their satisfaction today Mirabel said faking a smile.That’s why I love you Daniel said kissing Mirabel on her forehead and walking into his room. He took his shower and ate in his room as served by Mirabel. She didn’t want him to eat in the parlor in other not to go lurking around in the room of the girls.
Mirabel needed time to come up with an excuse. She needs to talk to Steve, he will have a suggestion to cover the girls disappearance from the house. All through the night, Mirabel couldn't sleep. She wanted to make a call so hard but making the call will only raise suspicion. So she decided to wait it out.It was morning already and Daniel always left early and doesn’t really check on the kids before leaving. So as usual, he prepared so early and left the house entering into his car. Mirabel was relieved that Daniel has left the house. She went into her room to take her phone to call Steve.
It occured to Daniel that he he hasn't seen his girls since yesterday morning. The house was so silent all through the night and this morning. He came down from the car and entered back into his house. He went straight into the room of the girls and to his amazement they were not there.
He came out of the room and there was Mirabel walking in behind him and they both face clashed. Mirabel's phone fell from her hands that became shaky.
Where are my daughters Daniel asked Mirabel with a frown...They…
I…

They…
They what? Daniel rebuked coming closer to Mirabel.
I don’t know…

I woke up and I discovered they have run away. I didn’t know what to do so I decided keep it from….
A slap landed on Mirabel's face and she held her hand on her cheek..My daughters left my house since yesterday and you kept it from me???
Are you okay??
What did you do to them before they ran away Daniel asked with rage in his eyes.
But I....Another slap swept through Mirabel’s other cheek. She fell on the floor and fainted. Daniel became confused..
He doesn’t know if he should go after his girls or take his wife who was carrying his son to the hospital .
