Episode 10
I got on my motor bike ready to go home but then I felt something vibrating in my pocket. I brought it out and looked at the screen, it was my younger brother. What could have be up to now?
“Sup bro” I said immediately I answered
“Where are you Derek? dad’s waiting for you. and I can’t cover for you much longer” he replied at the other end of the line.
“Just stalk him. I’m on my way”
“Wait, you haven’t left OMEGA till now? what were you doing there Mr risk stalker” he said, i could hear him sigh
“I’ll tell you about it as soon as i get there.”
“Just get your sorry ass here and whatever happens, don’t involve me in it okay, bear it alone” he spat
“Ok I know. I’m on my way, just stalk dad. Do whatever nerdy stuff you do and don’t let him get inside my room”
“You do the stuff and I get blamed for it. Ironic isn’t.”
“Just get on with it”
“Fine, but I know it’s that girl you met at the club”
“Shut up, it’s not her. I’ll be back in less than 20 minutes”
“Your life, whatever” he cut the call. Where’s the supportive brother when you need em?
That’s my brother Ben, he’s super nerdy. A brilliant guy that flushed his chances of having a social life down the toilet.
My name’s Derek. I’m in 22 and in my finals. When did it all begin?
I was a bright kid, always looked out for others. My life was pretty great cause we were born in a well to do family. My dad Mr Rees got married to my mom Camilia, they had us two years after their marriage. I’m older than Ken with just a year.
Life was really smooth for us until mom had passed away. I was only five, she got involved in an accident on her way to work. I watched her pass away. I witnessed everything. it was a tragic event that i would never forget.
“Derek. You have to take care of your brother and father, be a good boy. Mommy loves you” was the only thing she said before shutting her eyes. I didn’t understand a thing but now It all made sense to me. I’ve lost mom.
The death of mom was really heavy on dad. he had to become a widower, raising us on his own was pretty tough, I’ll have to admit. My brother was the wild type but after the death of
mom, he focused more on his studies ignoring the outside world.
I had to look out for him make sure, he didn’t have a problem.
We all went through the dark phase together and trust me, it was pretty rough but gladly I think everyone is over it, not forgotten but just over it.
(Fast forward)
I parked my bike and walked inside. I saw sad seated on the couch.
“Derek where have you been?” he asked. I looked at Ben who was giving me multiple signs i couldn’t understand
“I… um… was studying up in my room but then my bike had a
little fault so I took it to the mechanic” I lied
“Your bike had a fault when you were studying? does that even make any sense”
I looked at Ben. He scratched his head, I know he was feeling uncomfortable just like I was.
“I… was um reading this book about bikes so i um had to check it out on mine and um… ” I tried to think of more lies.
“Oh come on, I’m your dad and you can’t lie to me.”
“Sorry dad”
“I’m getting old son and very soon you’ll take care of the family business and you’ve got to learn how to be focused” he said
“Will try dad”
He nodded and went upstairs. I sighed and seated on the couch
“Phew. You blew it as always”
“Get outta here” I threw the puff at him
“I know it’s a girl”
“You don’t know anything”
“Trust me. I’ll meet her soon” he smiled and went upstairs.
“Curse you Ben” I yelled from downstairs
I took out my phone from my pockets, i went to my gallery. I saw the picture of the grouchy princess. I took it today when we were eating at OMEGA burgers. She’s really pretty but having problems I could tell.
I met her at the club. I actually went there with my brother. I spotted her on the counter drinking. It was really my first time seeing a girl drink that much. I thought she was having fun,
Not until I saw her crying and cursing at herself.
“Who’s she” I asked the bartender that served us drinks.
“I don’t know her, but she visits this place frequently, maybe to get some air” he said
“Alright thank you” I smiled and he left us
“Don’t get involved” Ben said gulping down his beer
“I won’t.”
“Are you sure, cause knowing you, you can do anything”
“Haha really funny” I gave a sarcastic laugh.
When I turned to look at her, she was already gone, damn it.
I’ve missed her. I made an excuse so i could run to meet her but when I got outside, she was no where to be seen. We went home after drinking and I swear I couldn’t get her out of my head. I was thinking of where I would see her again so i visited the bar that day.
I wasn’t expecting to see her there but maybe, just maybe I would cause I believed luck was on my side.
Few minutes after I started drinking, I saw a car pull up and she stepped down, she ordered two bottles of whiskey and I saw her drink them all.
She stood up to leave when those guys tried to take advantage of her. She couldn’t run cause she was a bit drunk. I beat those guys up and rescued her but she fainted in the process so i took her to my house. luckily for me, my dad was at work and my brother was not around.
I placed her on my bed and watched her sleep soundly, her phone rang. I looked at the screen, the caller was her mom and the next her dad. I guess she was fast asleep to hear it.
Then I saw text messages, it was from auspicious people wishing her a happy birthday. It was her birthday that day but why was she at the club? strange.
That’s when I realized that something was wrong somewhere and I decided to stick around to know what and probably help
her with it and trust me, I think it’s working cause grumpy princess laughed today but still there’s something eating her up and I promise to help her get through with it.
‘I’ve lost my laughter years ago ” she said to me.
Well princess, from today, your laughter is coming back to you, it’s not very far anymore….
I took a sip of my juice as I flipped through my notes. I jotted down the important stuffs, right now, I’m in the living room.
Nina was watching tv so I put on my ear buds but decreased the volume.
I really had to study. I want to pass this exam. I have to pass this exam so I would finally graduate. and… I think you know my next plan. To finally leave this house. I was busy taking notes when the doorbell rang.
“I’ll get it. you guys should study” mom said coming out from the kitchen.
I focused on my books, she walked to the front door and opened it.
“Hi” I heard her saying to the person.
“Hello ma’am”
It sounded like a guys voice so who could it be? maybe the mailman or newspaper guy I guess.
“How can I help you” mom asked him
“Um Is this princess’s house?”
“Not so sure, we don’t have any one by that name living here”
“How about Nira?”
“And who is asking?”
“Um Derek. ”
Wait did I just hear Derek? what is he doing here? I thought I told him to stay away from me? I stood up and peeked through the window, it was him
“Who are you to her?” mom asked him. I was already feeling restless. Please don’t say something stupid.
“Um her project partner. We’re study buddies, you know, for the up coming exams”
“Oh that, you’re kinda late. Nira already studying. Come on in” she opened the door for him and he came inside, he winked at me the moment he saw me.
“Nira, you have a visitor” mom said smiling
she turned to him “have a seat and make your self comfortable”
“Sure ma’am” he smiled
“Nina can you please serve him some juice?” mom said
“Ok mom” she stood up and went to the kitchen
“I’ll get some snacks” mom said and left as well I looked at him. He was smiling, almost on the verge of laughing
“What are you doing here? I thought I told you to stay away from me? ”
“Yes but I just wanted to see you”
“You asshole” I spat glaring my eyes at him
“Here you go” Nina served him the juice
“Thank you Nina, you guys almost have the same names” he looked at both of us “and you guys look almost the same, are you both…?”
“Yes she’s my twin”
He opened his mouth In awe
“Holy Mother of Neptune, you guys are twins?”
“Yes” Nina responded “she’s older than me”
I didn’t say anything, I just stuck the device in my ears but mom took it away.
“Don’t be stubborn Nira, you have a visitor” I rolled my eyes
“I didn’t even invite… ” I stopped myself from completing that sentence before I get thrown into an interview by my family and there’s no telling what this psycho would do.
“How come your mom and sis are so nice and you’re just the complete opposite of them”
“How come you left your house and come here to ask me silly questions” I fired back
“I came here to see you princess, studying is the half of it” he smirked
“So Derek how do you know my sister” Nina asked him and he stared at me
“You see, you’re sister and I go back in history, don’t we princess?”
Oh no! what if he reveals that incident at the bar cause my parents don’t know about it and I don’t want any drama.
I simply nodded
“We met at school” I threw him a look, is he covering for me?
“Bad, a problem with my studies so I was assigned to be tutored by your sis”
“Really, she’s never mentioned anything about you though”
“What??? she’s never… ” he shook his head
“Well the thing is, I’m your sisters knight in shining armor so she has to keep me safe, right?”
“Impossible” I muttered under my breath
“What’s that?”
“Nothing but if you’re feeling uncomfortable, you can go, the door is that way”
“But…
” Leave my life “she said and stormed upstairs into her room.
She wasn’t sounding nice anymore, i can’t believe she left. I stood up to go when her mom came out from the kitchen, she saw me
“Derek are you leaving?”
“Sis got the major temper like she always does” even her family knows that she behaves like this?
“Sorry dear, Nira is always like this”
“It’s okay ma’am. I’ll take my leave.”
“After you have lunch with us?”
“But… ”
“I insist”
“OK”
We went to the dinner table and sat down, few minutes later, Nira came down, she thew me a deadly stare immediately she set her eyes on me.
“He’s still here?”
“I asked him to stay for lunch” her mom responded
“Wow mom. you’re always looking for ways to ruin my life, and I thought I asked you to leave?” She yelled “stay away from me, I don’t want to have anything to do with you.”
“Nira he’s your guest”
“There’s a huge difference between a guest and a pester, he’s disturbing my life. You know what? I’ll make it easy for you. I’ll tell my parents everything so that you’ll stay away from me”
I was already feeling uncomfortable.
“Thanks for helping that day when those guys attacked me. It was nice of you to keep me company there, now they know so bye bye Derek” she waved her hand sarcastically
“You were attacked? when? how?”
“That’s a story to tell after he leaves”
“Fine I’ll leave princess”
“And Don’t call me that my name is Nira, got it?”
“Fine Nira” I stood up. I’ve heard enough.
“Bye aunt, bye Nina”
“Bye” Nina replied
I walked to the front and opened the door.
“Finally some peace and quiet” I heard her say before finally shutting the door.
“Nira?”
“Not now mom, attend to your daughter first” I overheard her saying, why is she sounding so rude and mean?
I got on my bike, started the engines and drove off. Maybe I made a mistake by coming here…
