A PLACE OF TERROR Episode 6 – Blessing-Enejo Abrahams Elleywrites

…”Jesus!” I screamed so loud, that was the last thing I remember cos I was told by Osas that I passed out and that as soon as he heard me scream he jerked up and hurried to the door, and then saw the head-less body still trying to find his way in when he slammed the door all of a sudden against him.

He had me resuscitated and as soon as I woke up I began to scream all over again and started to climb the bars by the window.

Osas grabbed me and then held me down on the bed.

“I want to go home! I’m fed up of all these things. Please leave me alone, I want to return home to my family before I d!e here” I said in between sobs.

“Victor calm down, just calm down a little” Osas persuaded but all fell on deaf ears as I continued struggling with him to let go of me.

“This is too h0rrorful. Is this a nightmare or what? Please God wake me up! This is too much already, just wake me up from this” I said wailing.

“Guy calm down, just calm down,” Osas said again.

We sat on the bed grabbing each other’s hands and not letting go. We were trembl!ng in fear and I was confused about what next to do so we could at least be out of there.

We started to hear voices from outside the compound, then, there came another knock on the door. Osas and I turned and looked at each other. None of us dared to even utter a word.

The knock kept on repeating itself and then Osas voiced out all of a sudden.

“Who is there?” he summoned the courage to ask.

“It’s me, the state coordinator” we heard.

Osas released his hand from mine and then approached the door. I shivered the more when I saw him almost twisting the door, then I threw a question at him.

“Do…do you really think we should do this?” I questioned.

“It’s the state coordinator, I’m sure of that. Let’s hear what he has to say” Osas said but it took him like extra 10 seconds before he opened the door. As soon as he turned the key he ran back to the bed, I lay with my head down with a pillow on the back of my head. I was trembl!ng in fear and at the same time praying to God to have his way.

“Hello” the coordinator said as soon as he stepped in. I raised my head immediately when I heard his voice, flung the pillow aside, and then hurried to him.

After seeing our faces he knew we were fr!ghtened, and then said to us.

“I’m sorry about what happened to your friend ok?” he said but Osas and I turned and looked at each other. We were both left in awe.

“Which friend sir?” Osas questioned with eyes popped open.

“Okpanachi of course. The girl’s father released him later after so many pleas. He was on his way here when he met his de@th.

“But… was…was he behe@ded?” I asked in-between sobs.

The state coordinator sighed heavily.

“Yes he was but, not by any human. ” he said.

” God!!” I said bursting into another round of tears.

“Okpa’s nooo” I screamed.

“But, who behe@ded him?” Osa’s asked curiously.

“Look, you are strangers here, I’m not supposed to even tell you anything about all that’s happening here” he said.

“You’re not supposed to tell us anything? A state coordinator? I think you owe the government some explanations cos I’m going to report you as soon as I’m out of here and I pray I do so alive. You’re supposed to be here protecting us but our lives don’t even mean anything to you. We were five vibrant men that were posted down here but your bl00d sucking dem0ns have eaten three. Who knows what will later become of us?” I r@ged in anger.

“Just calm down, I mean well for you guys” he repeated.

“Baba forget that thing! You are from this place and you know everything happening here and you never wrote to them to stop posting people here. ” Osas too fu-med

“Look, I’m sorry guys. That’s why I’m here to take you out of this place” he said

“Out of this place? To where we will get k!lled and made into pepper soup?” I thundered.

“No! No!! That’s not what I mean. I’m here to take you to my place” he said.

I paused for a moment.

“What’s that noise?” I asked.

“Oh, that? it’s the villagers. They are taking your friends b0dy for burial”

“Home to his place?” I queried.

“Ermmm…no, here,” He said scratching his head.

“What?!” Osas exclaimed.

“So, they k!ll you here and then you get bur!ed here? What about our people? You expect our parents to just wake up one day and forget their child’s existence? why are you people so cr-uel here?” I questioned.

He sighed again.

“Please guys, let’s go to my place, it’s getting too late” he said.

We packed our things in a hurry and as we were about leaving I remembered Eniola’s warning. I started to whisper her name to Osas stylishly but it took him a few seconds before he knew what I was saying.

“Ehen, this one is different” Osas barked all of a sudden calling the coordinator’s attention.

” What is it?” he asked but I told him not to worry.

We opened the door to see splashes of bl00d everywhere. Osas and I clung to each other, I was sc@red to my bones. We went outside the compound and there the body was lying in the trunk of a car with its head beside it. I doubled my pace as soon as I saw it and was unable to take a second look.

“Nooo Okpa’s no! ” Osas cried out aloud and went on his knees. The coordinator helped him up and started to pacify him.

It was already too late into the night. We were both in tears walking behind the coordinator. Our bags even became too heavy for us to carry cos of the pain in our hearts. We even forgot to put on our torch lights, only the coordinator’s torchlight was on but the moon was out there with its light on us.

“Hurry,” the coordinator said and then turned and paused.

I felt something within me, like “things were going the way they shouldn’t” kind of feeling. I looked up all of a sudden, the coordinator’s face had changed to that of a be@st. He let out a loud laugh revealing his two long teeth.

“Run” I screamed all of a sudden at the top of my voice and took to my heels but Osas lost balance and fell on his back…
