THE LAST CHAPTER.
MY HUSBAND’S SECOND WIFE
(That which you seek, you shall find in abundance)

As soon as Winnie drove into her compound, true to his word, Christian was already waiting for her on the veranda. No matter how busy his schedule was, he always brought home the restaurant’s best meal of the day to have lunch with her.

She parked her car, got out, and walked straight into his arms, which were open wide for her.

Christian dropped a gentle kiss on her forehead.

“You look tired, babe. Was the lecture that exhausting?”

Winnie nodded, resting her head against his chest. She listened to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, a sad smile creeping across her face.

What if he doesn’t accept her? she wondered silently.

Christian, sensing something was off, gently pulled away from the embrace and looked at her with concern.

“Hey, are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” Winnie replied with a forced smile, but Christian wasn’t convinced.

“What’s going on, Winnie? Are you hungry?”

She laughed lightly. “I am hungry, but first I need to tell you something important.”

Noticing her serious expression, Christian’s brows furrowed deeply.

“When a woman says she has something important to tell you with that look, it’s usually something bad,” he muttered. “Did I do something wrong? Seriously, I’ve never cheated on you or even looked at another woman since I met you. I swear—”

Winnie burst into laughter at his dramatic reaction.

“Come on, it’s nothing like that. You’ve done nothing wrong. I just need to tell you something about me.”

Christian sighed in relief. “Okay… so we’re good?”

“Definitely. Come inside and have a seat,” she said, leading the way into the house.

They settled onto the sofa, Christian sitting close beside her. All of a sudden, Winnie felt her palms grow sweaty. Nerves kicked in as she struggled to find the right words. But when she looked up and saw the calm, reassuring gaze he was giving her, she found a little courage to begin.

“Um… so, Christian, I met with Solomon today,” Winnie began hesitantly. “He came to school to see me—to ask for my forgiveness.”

She paused as the air around them seemed to grow cold. Slowly, she looked up to see Christian’s expression. He hadn’t said a word, but the look on his handsome face was so intense and unreadable that she immediately regretted mentioning her ex-husband.

“He didn’t do anything to me,” she quickly added. “He was just pleading—for forgiveness.”

But her words didn’t soften the frosty look on Christian’s face. Written by Authoress Winnie. B . Onuh.

“Christian, your face is scary. Smile a bit,” she muttered, trying to ease the tension.

“I’m trying really hard to smile, Winnie. I’m trying my best,” he said through clenched jaws.

“Well, try harder. I can’t keep talking when you’re staring at me like that,” she said with a shrug.

Christian closed his eyes briefly, forcing himself to calm down. After a long breath, he opened them again and looked at her.

“Alright. I’m calm. Go on.”

“He lost both his arms in an accident,” Winnie continued. “Though honestly, I doubt it was an accident… and I don’t really care. He looked pitiful, and I… I just wanted peace. So, I gave him back the boutique.”

She hesitated before adding, “I told him I never wanted to see him again. The reason I handed it over is because I don’t want anything that belongs to him anymore. I want to erase everything about Solomon from my life.”

When she finished speaking, she glanced at Christian. He was staring at her with a deep, unreadable gaze. She couldn’t tell if he was relieved, sad… or still angry.

“Are you angry?” she asked in a low tone.

Christian gave a small smile and shook his head. Instead of answering with words, he pulled her into his arms for a comforting hug.

“You did well,” he murmured. “Forgiving someone who hurt you that deeply is hard… and only strong people can do that. Winnie, you’re a strong person—stronger than me, because I don’t think I could have done it.”

Winnie didn’t know why, but hearing his reassuring words broke something inside her. The tears she had held back for so long finally found their way out. She tried to stop them, but they kept falling.

Christian said nothing more. He simply held her close, gently patting her back and whispering soothing words to comfort her.

After a few minutes of crying in his arms, Winnie wiped her eyes and sat up, bracing herself for what she knew was the real confession.

“Do you have something else to tell me?” he asked gently. Written by Authoress Winnie. B . Onuh.

She nodded.

“Can’t it wait?” he asked with a soft chuckle. “I’m really starving. I brought home the best item on today’s menu from the restaurant—you’re going to love it.”

He reached for the nicely wrapped food he had placed by his side and set it on the table.

“I need to tell you before we eat,” Winnie insisted.

“But you can still tell me while we eat,” Christian said as he began unwrapping the food. The moment the aroma hit Winnie’s nostrils, her expression changed. A wave of nausea washed over her, and she instantly felt like throwing up.

Christian, too focused on describing the dish, didn’t notice the shift in her face.

Unable to bear the nauseous feeling any longer, Winnie rushed out of the room and into the bathroom.

Startled, Christian dropped everything and ran after her.

“Babe, are you alright?” he asked anxiously, gently patting her back as she leaned over the sink.

Winnie nodded weakly. She wiped her mouth, flushed the toilet, and splashed some water on her face before turning to him.

“I just felt a little sick,” she muttered.

“Maybe it’s because you’re hungry,” Christian said, concerned. “I’ve told you, skipping lunch isn’t good for you. Come on, let’s go eat something.”

He gently led her back to the sitting room. But as soon as the aroma of the food hit her again, Winnie pulled away from him and rushed back to the bathroom to throw up once more.

Christian stood frozen, speechless.
“…”

He stared at the bathroom door, confused and completely dumbfounded. Not knowing what else to do, he suddenly began shouting for the housekeeper.

Chioma’s mom had been taking her afternoon nap when she heard the desperate calls for help. Alarmed, she rushed out of her bedroom and into the sitting room.

“What’s going on?” she asked, eyes wide with concern.

Christian pointed toward the bathroom.

“Winnie won’t stop vomiting.”

The housekeeper followed Christian’s direction and found Winnie in the bathroom, looking pale and weak.

She gently touched Winnie’s forehead, then felt her pulse.

“When did she start vomiting?” she asked.

“Just now,” Christian replied quickly. “I think it started as soon as I opened the food I brought from the restaurant. Do you think she might be allergic to seafood? But she had some just a few days ago and was perfectly fine.”

The housekeeper glanced at Winnie, then asked calmly,

“Child, when was the last time you had your period?”

Christian: “…”

Winnie: “…”

They both stared at her in stunned silence. The question hung heavily in the air—especially for Winnie, who knew what the doctors had told her.

“I haven’t seen it this month yet…” she answered slowly, her voice barely above a whisper.

“What’s today’s date?” the housekeeper asked again.

Christian quickly checked his phone.

“Today’s the last day of the month…” he said—and then, realization struck him. His eyes widened in disbelief.

“Child,” Chioma’s mom said with a bright smile, pulling Winnie into a warm embrace, “I think you’re expecting a baby. Congratulations.”

Winnie stood frozen, too stunned to speak. The world around her seemed to blur.

“T-That’s not possible,” she stammered. “The doctor said… he said I don’t have a womb… he said I can’t ever have a baby… so this can’t be real. Maybe… maybe I’m sick or…” Written by Authoress Winnie. B. Onuh.

She trailed off into tears, her body trembling. The shock, the fear, the hope—everything hit her all at once. She didn’t know how to take the news.

“Shhh… Winnie, it’s okay,” Christian whispered, pulling her into a tight embrace. “The doctor is not God, remember?”

“But this… this has to be a mistake,” she said shakily. “I saw the reports, Christian. You won’t understand because you weren’t there when the doctor told me I could never have a baby…”

Christian let out a soft laugh. “Winnie, I know. I’ve always known. And if you’re truly pregnant now, then it means God really is no man.”

She slowly pulled away from his arms and stared at him in disbelief.

“You knew?”

Christian nodded. “Of course, I did. I knew even before I asked you to be mine forever. When you were hospitalized, the doctor ran a full background check and told me everything.” Written by Authoress Winnie. B. Onuh.

“Yet… you still wanted to be with me?”

He chuckled at her shocked expression and gently took her hands.

“Winnie, the world is so digitalized now. There are so many ways to have children—even if you don’t carry them yourself. And I have the money, so what’s there to worry about?”

Winnie was speechless. She stared at him, eyes filled with tears, then slowly wrapped her arms around him again. Written by Authoress Winnie . B. Onuh.

Christian smiled. “Wait—so this is why you were so tense? You thought I’d leave you because of that?” He shook his head, still smiling. “Come on, I never even thought about leaving. And now, we just need to go confirm if this miracle is real.”

Chioma’s mom stood quietly nearby, tears of gratitude filling her eyes. She couldn’t stop thanking God in her heart. He truly gives His people second chances. He never forgets His own.

Just as the couple was about to leave, Chioma’s mom stopped them, her face lit up with excitement.

“Wait! I know an easier way,” she said quickly.

They turned to look at her curiously as she added,

“I have a pregnancy test kit right here. I bought it a long time ago—just in case Winnie would ever need it. You can use it to confirm now. Though honestly, there’s no more accurate test kit than a Nigerian mother. We can see pregnancy from afar.”

They all burst into laughter.

Without wasting time, the housekeeper rushed into her room and returned within a minute, handing the kit to Winnie.

Winnie accepted it with trembling hands and quietly walked into the bathroom, her heart pounding harder than ever. She had never been this anxious in her life.

What if it’s a false alarm? she thought, staring at herself in the mirror.

She quickly shook her head, trying to silence the doubt creeping into her mind. Written by Authoress Winnie. B. Onuh

A few minutes later, when she was done, Winnie stood in the bathroom holding the test tube, too afraid to look at the result.

She hesitated, then walked out and handed it to Christian.

“I don’t have the courage to look,” she whispered.

Christian was just as anxious, but he tried his best to stay calm. He took the test from her trembling hands and slowly looked down at it.

Two bright lines stared back at him.

He froze, staring at it for a long moment, his eyes welling up with tears.

“Is it positive?” Winnie asked softly.

He nodded, still staring at the result.

“We’re actually pregnant,” he said—then shouted with joy, “We’re pregnant!”

He lifted her up in excitement, spinning her around as she gasped and laughed.

Winnie still couldn’t believe it. How is this even possible?

“I better start setting up the nursery,” Chioma’s mom said, already in planning mode. “And I don’t care if it’s a boy or girl—I’ll set up two rooms. One for a girl and one for a boy. It would be awesome if it’s twins!”

The couple laughed at her seriousness.

Later that night, Winnie called Angela to share the news. The moment she said the words, Angela let out a scream so loud that Winnie had to pull the phone away from her ear.

“I’m booking the next available flight home!” Angela cried.

“What about your holiday with your man?” Winnie asked, amused.

“My nephew or niece needs me more,” Angela replied without hesitation.

Winnie chuckled. “The baby’s barely a few weeks old.”

“That’s exactly the time to build the bond! Winnie, what do you even know?” Angela replied in an overly serious tone.

When the call ended, Winnie slipped into bed and snuggled into Christian’s arms, resting her head on his chest.

And for the first time in a long time… peace wrapped itself around her.

He kissed her forehead and pulled her into a warm embrace.

“Thank you for making me a father,” he whispered.

“You’re still not married to me though,” Winnie replied in a teasing tone, a sleepy smile on her lips.

Christian chuckled. “Weddings are stressful. Let’s go get our marriage certificate tomorrow. After you’ve given birth, we’ll visit your relatives and do something proper. But for now, we need to lay low and be careful.”

Snuggling closer to him, Winnie whispered with her eyes half closed,

“Whatever you say is fine by me. Goodnight, baby. I love you.”

“Love you too, mi amor,” he murmured, kissing her goodnight.

As she drifted off to sleep in his arms, Christian stayed awake a little longer, watching her peaceful face. His heart was full.

He made a silent vow to return to the gym where they had first met—to find the owner and give him a generous sum to support his business. That gym had given him the greatest gift of his life.

The End.
